Spacious 2 bedroom cottage beside River Teviot. Off road parking for 2 or more vehicles. Suntrap patio garden with furniture. Families & dogs welcome. Ideal base for exploring Scottish / English borders and for walking, biking, fishing, horse riding or just relaxing. Short stays and late bookings happily arranged.
Fantastic rural setting with stunning countryside in all directions. Riverside location great for relaxing by the water but far enough away to stop young children from exploring alone. Spacious accomodation is more than comfortable for 4 adults (plus an extra fold out bed available if required for 5) and the large dining kitchen is perfect for conversation over home cooked meals. Asda and Sainsbury will deliver groceries to the cottage via online orders. Town is only a 10 minute drive away and there are plenty of restaurants and take aways if you'd rather not cook. The area is steeped in tradition and history with centuries old Border Reivers and Common Ridings, abbeys, a world famous textile heritage and more recently, the best off road mountain biking you can find anywhere. There are many walks, cycle routes and nature reseves on the doorstep and at night we have a blanket of starry skies which spans uninterrupted for miles. If you like star gazing, we have amazing vast dark skies here at Colterscleuch. We are also close to Kielder Observatory and only 2 hours from Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park.
The Cottage is your home while you're here and you have private access to the patio garden, shared access to the acre of garden between the house and cottage, shared access to the river. There is off road private parking for 2 or more vehicles in the carport and hard standing to the rear for motorbikes. There is also a private locked shed for cycles, fishing gear and motorbikes etc. Facilities for washing cycles and bikes are outside the cottage. If you need any specialist clothing dried overnight, let us know and we can do this for you at the house. We can keep fish in the freezer at the house.
You can interact as little or as much as you like. We live within the same 2 acres of land and are available 24hrs via telephone. We will welcome you on arrival and are happy to help with anything during your stay but we will not knock on your door or pester you unless you request it. Our chickens produce fresh eggs every day and we will leave some for you to sample along with a few essentials on your arrival. They make a great breakfast treat! Just let us know if you'd like any more during your stay (eggs are not Lion Marked)
There is private parking for 2 or more vehicles at the Cottage. Driving will give you the most flexible access to the many Scottish and English border attractions / activities. You can drive to the outskirts of Edinburgh then use the park and ride bus facility to avoid having to navigate and find parking in the city.
The X95 bus has an hourly service from the cottage north into Hawick (10 minutes by bus) and then travels on to the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh. The same service runs hourly to Carlisle in the south. There is no bus stop, just hold your hand out and it will stop for you at the side of the road. Current timetable will be available in the Cottage.
We had a lovely time staying at Deborah and Peter's cottage. It was extremely clean, spacious, quiet (except for the cockerel! No, he wasn't a problem.) We were given milk, butter, bread, brownies and eggs. On the main road, but slightly below it and didn't hear traffic. Good location for going on country walks and seeing antiquities (Hermitage Castle, Hawick, Jedburgh, etc.)
We had a lovely stay in the cottage, which was warm and well appointed through-out.
The cottage is near enough to the main house that we were able to pop-over to borrow some cake trays, but is set far enough apart that it feels private and homely.
Debs was lovely -- very relaxed/welcoming, responded promptly to queries, and provided lots of useful information (as well as some delicious brownies).
Would heartily recommend, and I would happily stay again if I was looking for a relaxing stay amidst the beautiful Scottish borders.
Oh - and I recommend popping by the nearby Celtic jewelers, which is run by a lovely guy who was able to give lots of useful information about the local geography and good walks to go on.
What a lovely cottage this was! From the gorgeous surroundings to the tasteful decor it was spot on. A really warm welcome from Deb and Pete and lots of goodies to kick start the week- really nice touch. Deb and Pete were really attentive and also completely happy to just let you get on with things- and everything is really straightforward to use with clear instructions- so the perfect hosts. All mod cons, stylish and homely with a modern twist - what better in life than a remote, country cottage with free Wifi and a massive widescreen TV. Perfect blend of the traditional and the modern and for us the best getaway to prepare us for the busy January ahead. The weather was essentially British, but we did not care one bit- plenty of books and DVDs saw to that and the wild birds just outside the large lounge window kept us entertained for hours- wildlife really is on the doorstep. Some beautiful walks very near by for the rainier days, but we did venture further afield to the monasteries, interesting towns scattered around the borders and castles etc. Hermitage Castle is a must- breathtaking. Nearby Hawick is bigger than expected and a friendly, scenic and pleasant town just a few miles away, though the cottage does feel like its much further away from urban bustle as its so quiet and self contained. The stars above with such scare unnatural light are amazing to see. We are really looking forward to returning later and so pleased we discovered this gem! Most of all our pup Frankie had a great time- once he overcame his phobia of chickens. Thanks Deb and Pete, hope to see you gain before long.
Our stay here was perfect. The cottage is really beautiful and spacious and had everything we could have possibly needed for our stay. The area is also beautiful, and the town close by has nice restaurants and shops. We stayed over christmas and Deb the host even set up a tree with presents for us. She was the most friendly and helpful host we could ever ask for. I would recommend this cottage to anyone. Thank you Debbie!!!
Had a fantastic time. The cottage was clean, warm and gorgeous! Deborah had provided little extras that made all the difference. Would definitely stay there again. Lots of walking and places to see in the area.
Our stay at the cottage was a wonderful relaxing holiday. It is a truly beautiful region and we took great pleasure in exploring it. The cottage itself was marvellous. It was much larger than we thought and extremely pleasant to stay there. Everything needed was provided and more. Debbie and her husband were wonderful and helped us settle in. They have chickens and their eggs were delicious! Waking up to birds singing was just a bonus.
Thank you Debbie and Peter!!!
We hope to return soon.
It was lovely to meet you and it would be great to have you stay again, anytime you like. And it was cool to have a feline guest too. I'm glad your cat and mine seemed to get along just fine (well my butch tom cat was actually scared of your fluffy girl, ha ha!) I hope you get settled in your new place soon. Debs x
ps. Thanks so much for the chocolate, it was delicious!
Couldn't recommend this place more. The stay was incredibly relaxing and just what we needed. The cottage is inviting and comforting. We loved looking out the patio doors every morning and seeing the happy chickens that laid fresh eggs for our breakfast everyday. The garden was very peaceful and the cottage was really quiet.
Deborah and Peter have thought of every little detail and the cottage is beautiful. We have already recommended to friends and family and will definitely be going back.
We had a great time at Colterscleuch, which is a lovely cottage. The warm welcome of his owner was another big point, so we enjoyed it very much an can fully recommend this accomodation.
Thanks for chosing to stay at Colterscleuch. You are such a lovely family and we really enjoyed meeting you and talking with you. I have decided that I need to learn some languages because your English is so good and I wished I could have conversed with you in German and Spanish. Thank you for the wine, it was very good :)
We love the cottage! And we love our Host. The cottage was wonderful in terms of amenities and location. The cottage had a spacious kitchen that had all the tools you would need to cook if you needed to. The living area was large and comfortable. It looked out onto a field of grazing chickens and sheep. Beautiful. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was also large and spacious: a separate tub and shower was included. The cottage was clean, comfortable and warm. The location of the cottage was a plus. We wanted access to several castles and abbys and we were willing and able to drive. The castles and abbys were no more than an hours drive. Pack a lunch and venture off to explore Scotland. Or, you can cuddle up in the cottage and take walks around the country side. It is absolutely beautiful.
Our host was the icing on the cake. She was warm, personable and willing to help out when we were in need. She went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to ensuring that we had a comfortable stay. The neighbors were nice and friendly as well. The cottage is a must stay if you want to relax in Scotland.
We arrived to a warm wecome from Deborah ad Peter, with fresh eggs and Scottish shortbread on the kitchen table for us. The cottage is delightful. It is clean, comfortable and roomy with an outdoor patio for relaxing in the sun and watching the birds on the feeders.
We used this as a base to explore Edinburgh and Northumberland regions by car.
We would highly recommend this cottage, and were sorry to have to move on. It was the best stay of our holiday.
I'm so happy that you enjoyed your stay. It's a very new venture for us and it's great to get your feedback. I'm glad I got to meet you on arrival, you are so positive and full of energy that you put a wee spring in my step! I found your hot water bottle after you'd gone - would you like me to forward it home to you? I hate to lose an old friend and I'd be happy to reunite you. Deb
