THE APARTMENT
At a glance…
If you’re drawn to places with soul—a touch of the old, a splash of the new—you’ll feel at home at Chez David in Vaugines.
The apartment is an intimate space surrounded by greenery in the heart of Vaugines, a typical Provençal village perched on a small hill just up the road from Lourmarin—and within easy reach of Aix-en-Provence and Avignon.
Our gîte appeals to visitors looking for charm and comfort, especially those who enjoy outdoor activities such as walking and cycling.
Chez David is simple but chic. And if the sun isn’t shining (which is rare here), there are three superb cultural centres nearby: Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Arles.
A bit more detail…
Everything at Chez David has its own character: from the vaulted bedroom with en-suite shower (no bath) and window seat overlooking the garden path, to the lounge and small kitchen that open directly onto the terrace and covered patio.
Park on the road just outside the garden gate, climb a few steps through a partly walled, slightly wild garden (with two fig trees, an olive tree and plenty of greenery), and pass the picnic table tucked among the foliage.
As you step inside the apartment (there are a few more steps—please take care), you’ll find the bedroom ahead of you, with its vaulted ceiling, garden-facing windows (including a window seat), double bed and en-suite shower.
Through the passageway is the lounge with its newly built-in kitchen (two induction hobs, microwave oven, fridge, cooking utensils), toilet (with washing machine), and sitting area with two sofas, bookcases—and access to two outdoor spaces.
The covered patio faces south, while the secluded terrace (with iron table, wooden sofa and chairs) faces east—ideal for enjoying your morning coffee outside.
We don’t claim that our gîte is luxurious; rather, it is charming and homely—a real home, not a five-star hotel.
Inside you’ll find:
Vaulted bedroom with double bed, en-suite shower, window seat overlooking the garden and sofa
Lounge with two sofas, bookcases, built-in kitchen (induction hob, microwave, fridge, etc.), small dining table
Utility room with toilet and washing machine
Outside you’ll find:
Covered south-facing patio (with large wooden table and bench), sheltered by greenery
Secluded east-facing terrace (table for four, garden furniture including sofa), with views of the garden and Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the distance
Garden—natural and informal, especially beautiful in autumn and spring, with hidden spots for eating and relaxing, including a large bench with sun umbrella
Guest access
The apartment and garden form part of a larger house (also available to rent), but the accommodation is fully independent. All spaces and access are exclusively for guests.
THE LUBERON
Nearby:
Lourmarin (5–10 minutes)
Cucuron and its historic basin (5 minutes)
Étang de la Bonde (10 minutes)
Bonnieux, Ansouis, Ménerbes (20–25 minutes)
Provençal markets, wineries and restaurants
Vaugines and the surrounding area are ideal for cycling, mountain biking, hiking and reconnecting with nature throughout the year.
The gîte is also a wonderful place to relax and recharge, while still offering easy access to historic cities such as Aix-en-Provence and Avignon—or, on the coast, Marseille and Cassis.
VAUGINES: OUR VILLAGE
A peaceful hamlet perched between Cucuron and Lourmarin (the burial place of Albert Camus), Vaugines is surrounded by vineyards and backed by the hills of the Luberon mountains. The village offers direct access to walking, hiking and cycling trails.
This picturesque village is popular with cyclists (one of the reasons we chose to live here), walkers and horse riders.
Unlike many small villages, it has a shop-bakery, a bar serving pizzas and light meals, and an excellent restaurant—all within three minutes of the gîte.
To the north rises the Luberon mountain range; elsewhere, you are surrounded largely by vineyards.
MORE ABOUT OUR APARTMENT
A Home, Not a Hotel
We love our garden flat—it is part of our home.
We hope you will enjoy it too and treat it with the care it deserves. We use the same accommodation once your stay has ended.
As this is an old Provençal house with several steps, it is not suitable for guests with mobility difficulties, young children or people with disabilities.
No smoking is permitted anywhere on the property, indoors or outdoors.
SMALL PETS
We are dog lovers—and proud of our home.
We welcome small pets, with a few respectful guidelines:
No pets on sofas or bedding
Pets must not be left alone in the house
Owners must clean up after their pets
If that sounds fair, we would be delighted to welcome your furry companion.
We have sticks and balls for dogs, and Sir Bobby (our cocker spaniel) is happy to say hello—as long as your pet is friendly.
We are also happy to recommend local walking routes and a nearby vet if needed. Please remember to bring your pet’s bowls.
Please note: due to the nature of this old Provençal house, it is not suitable for guests with mobility issues or young children.
Guest access
The garden flat forms part of a larger house (which can also be let) but is also independent from it.
All the spaces, and access through the garden, is exclusive to guests staying in the flat - it is very private and intimate.
Other things to note
CHEZ DAVID: A HOME AND NOT A HOTEL
We love our garden flat, and it's part of our home - we hope you will love it too, and take as much care of it as we do! That's really important to us.
Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the accommodation itself, the garden or terraces.
SMALL PETS
We're pet lovers AND proud house-owners, and this is what works for us:
Your pet is not allowed on our three (brand new) sofas or (brand new) bedding!
Your dog or cat cannot be left in the house by themselves.
The owner clears up any mess!
These are our "rules". We hope you think they're fair. If not, we will not be able to accept your pet. Sorry.
But if you are happy, then we have plenty of sticks and balls for your dog to play with in the garden!
If your dog (or cat) gets on with other dogs, we can introduce him to our cocker, Sir Bobby (who, incidentally, is never allowed on our beds or sofas).
We can show you the best walks around the village (and where the poo bags are)!
We can recommend the best vet in town, if there's a problem.
And don't forget to bring your cat/dog bowls!
Still unsure? Then message us.
We hope that makes sense, and that you think it's fair.
CHECK-IN AND CHECKOUT TIMES
We try to be flexible with these: if 4 pm and 11 am don't work for you, let us know and we will try to accommodate your wishes! (The gite is normally available from 2 pm onwards, but do check with us first so we can confirm).
