Description

The space

Our nearly-new downtown Kelowna home is quite lovely. Your room is on the main floor, which features hardwood floors throughout and tasteful art. The double bed is a new, high-quality spring-based futon. There is a chair (with lap desk for working with your laptop) and dresser in the room and plenty of closet space. The adjacent four piece bathroom is exclusively yours for nighttime use (no one else sleeps on this floor) and bathing/showering.

We are a quiet, friendly, couple who work from home. We have one small, friendly, non-shedding and quiet dog named Biscuit. The deck and courtyard garden are good places places to enjoy the sunshine, play board games and read. You can also hang out in the living room and dining area.

You can walk to downtown restaurants, shops, lakeside boardwalk, and beaches. Swimming, boating and hiking, along with amazing views are very close by. Wine tours are fabulous and in the winter, two amazing ski locations (Big White and Silver Star Mountain) are just an hour away.

Public transit is a block away.

You may use the kitchen to prepare light meals, leaving everything clean and tidy after each use. There is some space in the fridge, and some shelf space for you in the pantry.

Laundry is available for $5/load, with soap provided.

Guest access

Living room, kitchen, dining area, deck, garden courtyard.

Interaction with guests

We work from home in our offices on the second floor. We enjoy chatting with guests when we're not working to deadlines and we're always happy to make recommendations for restaurants and our favorite activities. We have books to loan on wine touring and hiking trails.

The neighborhood

We love our urban neighbourhood with a mix of newer homes like ours, and nicely kept older homes. We have friendly, helpful neighbours.

Bike and walking trails that will take you all over the city are two blocks away. You can bring your own bikes, rent bikes from the city and store them in our garage. Our bikes may be available on -loan with a security deposit.

You can walk to three grocery stores, the closest just three blocks away and also to Starbucks. Our favourite restaurants include Bouchon's for charming ambience and excellent French cuisine, Raudz for a locally sourced menu, well-executed, the Hobo or the Bohemian for excellent breakfast and lunch. Dine in on charcuterie or pick up a picnic at The Salted Brick and enjoy it by the lake. Sample award-winning locally distilled spirits (including Paddy's favourite gin) at Urban Distillers on Bernard. Great coffee at Gio Bean on Water Street or The Bean Scene on Bernard.

The Rotary Marsh is a lovely place to see blue herons, ducks, turtles, and fish (see my photo of the marsh), and you can stroll from there along the waterfront to parks, dining and entertainment. In July and August there are free concerts in the city parks along the lake, buskers, free pianos for your use and even public dance events.

Visitors can drive or bus to skiing at Big White, Silverstar, Sovereign Lake, Apex, or Crystal Lake. There are many award-winning wineries in and around Kelowna and throughout the valley, with organized tours available. Hiking on nearby Knox Mountain offers good exercise, rewarded with amazing views of Lake Okanagan and the Valley.

Getting around

There is a bus stop two blocks away, and as mentioned you can easily walk downtown, to a Starbucks, and to two grocery stores.

Street parking is free.

Other things to note

Kelowna is a wonderful place to visit, and to live. We moved here ten years ago from the Toronto area and just love the beauty of nature and the ease of connecting with nature here. We also love that Kelowna has great restaurants, live theatre, symphony, ballet and opera, and the best shopping in the Southern Interior of B.C.

Kelowna is centrally located in the magnificent Okanagan Valley, making it a great jumping off point for tours of the north and south valley, easily achievable in day trips from our home. There are several excellent wine touring companies who handle all the driving, if you wish, leaving you free to imbibe to your happy place limit.

One no-charge, private, 45 minute, personally guided introduction to mindfulness meditation is available to guests who request it, if Paddy is home during your visit. You must specifically request it because we will not otherwise bring it up.

It is important that our guests are quiet as we respect our neighbour's right to quiet. So no loud music please and only quiet conversations on the deck in the evenings.

Free parking on the street.

Paddy is a friendly host, the rental is a great deal, clean, and comfortable. I attended Kelowna for business purposes and in most cases I walked to my downtown meetings--which was a 10 minute trek. One thing I loved about 9am meetings, is that the coniferous trees at the house added a certain freshness to the air, and made the mornings beautiful. I parked my rental car on the street, and I used it to travel to the recommended restaurants that Paddy provided. Her house is gorgeous, she's extremely connected with the community and she can direct you to any business or restaurant that you may be needing. I highly recommend this Airbnb if you're making your first steps in the Okanagan. Or are looking for an escape from the bustling city-life. This is the first time that I can say I will be definitely staying at this Airbnb in the future.

I was visiting my daughter in Kelowna when I stayed with Paddy and Joanne. The location is perfect. Coffee, groceries, restaurants, and waterfront walking trails are all within an easy and safe walk, bike ride, or 2 min drive. Location aside, I really felt like I had landed in a home away from my home in Arizona. The bedroom and bathroom are private, yet open to the beautiful and bright main living area. I had space and privacy to work in my room, with the option to socialize when I wanted. I've experienced some wonderful connections with Airbnb hosts before, but this stay topped them all. There were too many perks to list but if I were to highlight the main thing that sets this place apart from the others is that the hosts really understand a traveler's needs: rest, connection with community, a good shower, laundry, good coffee/tea, intellectual and really inspiring conversations, and feeling safe and cared for. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

Response from Paddy:
I have gotten away from publically thanking guests for choosing to stay with us, and so here I am, getting back to it. Thank you Elaine for your very kind words. We had a wonderful time with you. You are a treasure!

Paddy and Joanne are extremely nice and caring hosts. I felt at home immediately and the whole process was very easy. Their fotos give a good impression what the room is like. The place is located in a quiet residential area, but downtown cafés and shops are within walking distance. Thank you for 30 wonderful days with you!

I had a tremendous week with Paddy and Joanne. They were gracious hosts who welcomed me to their warm and welcoming home. The room and separate bathroom were very well cared for and the bookshelf was filled with wonderful reading choices. The fresh ground dark roast coffee was also a treat. The location is in a great neighbourhood with a short walk to downtown Kelowna dining and the lakeshore pathways.
