About this listing
The "Frere (rhymes with air) House" is a gorgeous 1909 Victorian that will take you back in time. Used in several projects, the feature film "Untraceable" and considered for a "Grimm" episode. Music lessons by a Pro make for an unforgettable trip.
After hosting for four years the original photos taken by Airbnb are outdated. Several of the new photos are taken with an iphone and hardly capture the essence of this space. The dozens of five star reviews from many happy guests from around the world are a great indicator of the magic of The Frere House. There Frere House is a legal permitted business with Airbnb and the city of Portland.
NOTE FROM THE HOST:
"I am ecstatic to now be a Superhost! If you are a first time airbnb user, please fill our your profile completely as detailed as possible and let me know about your trip to Portland - are you visiting for the first time? Who will you be bringing with you? Are you attending classes, visiting family, working? Hosts like to know as much as possible about their guests and I want to be sure I can accommodate you in every way. Many of the Portland airbnbs are shared dwellings like The Frere House. Your room is private with a nice sized shared bath. You are also welcome to make yourself at home in the communal living, dining and kitchen." Kathryn, your friendly Airbnb Host

This listing is for the "Queen Room" in The Frere House, a 1909 Victorian Beauty situated between Portland's Historical Irvington district and the quirky Alberta Arts area. This private room is a large 220 square foot space on the top floor with newly re-finished hardwood floors, three large windows, a walk-in closet, nicely furnished with antiques and contemporary furniture and is steps away from a roomy vintage bathroom. The room can comfortably house three guests if two share the large bed. The sofa loveseat doubles as a twin sized bed if needed.
Guests have this private area to themselves as well as access to the common area on the main floor which includes a quaint vintage kitchen, a cozy living room and a dining room with a large table to gather for eating and conversing. The common area is shared with the owner and an occasional airbnb guest and/or tenant. The kitchen has everything you need to cook light meals (pots, pans, dishes, etc.) but you may not be inclined to cook with all the excellent restaurants within walking distance.
The location of the house is as desirable as the house itself being just three blocks from the famed Alberta district, Portland's most active and sought after place to reside. There is easy access to public transportation with two bus stops just three blocks in two directions with busses that will take you wherever you need to go. Enterprise Rental Car is near and will pick up.

Her award-winning music has been featured on the Official Grammy Ballot. She is an excellent instructor in Voice, Guitar, Bass, Piano and offers her expertise as a songwriting coach as well. For more info about lessons please inquire through this site.
There is a large communal area with a vintage kitchen, a cozy living room and a large dining room to sit comfortably, eat and socialize.
Interaction with guests
The owner lives in the house and is available for questions and help when needed.
This is Portland's best neighborhood! It's just a perfect spot to stay in this city and all is within walking distance. The last Thursday (Alberta Street's monthly Mardi Gras) is something to see if you really want to have the "Portlandia" experience.
There are buses just three blocks away that are very simple to use to get to where you need if you won't have a car and even if you do (saves on parking fees). The Trimet website will give you info on point to point trips.
Other things to note
The cable TV is local cable (50 or so channels). We also have Netflix.
Laundry is available for those who are staying ten days or longer with designated hours at a charge of $5 per load.
Long term guests are expected to clean up after themselves in their rooms and in the kitchen (dishes washed, counters wiped, floor swept if there are spills, etc). We discourage keeping food in the rooms to avoid Portland's known ant problem. We are proud we have no ants due to cleaning diligence and guests honoring this rule (there is lots of cupboard space and room in the fridge). The house has a thorough deep clean weekly but guests being mindful about their own cleaning make the home very pleasantly tidy at all times. (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Please have each checked in guest read The Frere House Rules.
This is a smoke, pet and shoe free home. The 100 year old floors have just recently been re-done and cannot accommodate heels, wheels or animals. The results of no shoes make for a comfortable tidy house at all times!
No excessive drinking, no drugs and no parties. This home cannot accommodate events or groups of over eight people.
No smoking of any kind in or on the property. This is a strongly enforced rule. The dryness of Portland makes it especially vulnerable to fires so no candles, cigarettes or anything burning or with a flame is not allowed.
This house is meant to be a calm, safe and creative space to stay. Noise should be lowered after 10 pm to respect neighbors and other guests.
No outside guests allowed onto the premises without prior approval from management. No over night stays for anyone other than the checked in guests.
This address cannot be used to receive mail of any kind.
The Wifi password is Onelittle1 (user name is hippieloveslave)
Please do not move the furniture. We like it exactly where it is!
Food left out attracts bugs. Please do not leave open containers of food in the rooms. The kitchen has a large refrigerator, lots of cupboard space and a recycling area for trash, etc.
There is no need to strip the beds. Thanks so much but will do this for you so you can relax and enjoy your stay.
Use of the kitchen is welcome and encouraged. Please wash all dishes and wipe the counter space, sink and stove after use.
No candles or flames of any sort are allowed.
Please lock the door each time you exit using the middle button on the keypad.
The bath is shared with other guests. Please clean up after use, be mindful of your time and remove any wet towels (they can be hung in the closets).
No hair dying is allowed in the bathroom.
Please alert us of anything that is broken or that you notice needs attention.
Please keep all the Frere belongings in the home including towels, washcloths, blankets, etc. We cherish all our things. Thank you!
