The Space

The "Frere (rhymes with air) House" is a gorgeous 1909 Victorian that will take you back in time. It was used in the feature film "Untraceable", considered for a "Grimm" episode and used in other various indy films and projects.

"Wow!" is the common thing heard when folks enter the wainscoting filled entry way. The house has a "vibe" that is difficult to put into words. "Cozy" is a good one. "Homey" is another. "Unique", "Beautiful", Original" are a few others.
The main floor has a vintage kitchen with a one-of-a-kind antique sink, a large living and dining area with a big communal table, a sunny front porch with a swinging bench and a large back deck for relaxing. In the unfinished basement there are laundry facilities for guests (see "Rules" for details).

There are two rooms available (please see other listing for a description of the second room). They are both very large (approx. 220 square feet), have walk in closets, beautiful newly refinished hardwood floors and are steps away from a cozy bath with a giant claw foot tub. This particular room has three large windows that overlook the front yard, a comfy queen size bed with a huge wood canopy frame (another "Wow!"), various antique furniture, a small writing desk, clean linens, free wi-fi and a cute (faux) fireplace. A comfortable twin bed is available for a third guest.

The location of the house is as desirable as the house itself being just three blocks from the famed Alberta district, Portland's most active and sought after place to reside. There is easy access to public transportation, a house bike for use, "Cool Cat' who comes to the yard often to be pet by guests and lots and lots of grass to throw out a blanket to soak up some sun, play frisbee or play some guitar.

For something really different, add a lesson to your stay. Kathryn is an award winning singer, musician and songwriter who has had her music on the Official Grammy Ballot. She is an excellent instructor in Voice, Guitar, Bass, Piano as well as a songwriting coach. Perhaps we can arrange for you to sing with a band or inspire you to write a song.

Note: The owner lives in the property part-time. There are two tenants who stay in far ends of the house who are very cordial, very helpful with airbnb guests, very busy, both good cooks and rarely home.

The uniqueness of the house, the neighborhood, the "vibe", the friendly folks serenading you will make your stay at the Frere House something to remember. Please email if you have questions.

Guest Access

There is a large communal area with a cozy living area and a dining room with a large table to eat and socialize.

Interaction with Guests

I live in the house and am available for questions and help when and if needed.

Getting around

There are buses just three blocks away that are very simple to use to get to where you need if you won't have a car and even if you do (saves on parking fees). The Trimet website will give you info on point to point trips.

  • We stayed there for 5 nights over a long weekend and had a wonderful time in Kathryn's home. Kathryn is welcoming and friendly, and very musical! The house is lovely with lots of vintage charm. Shared bathroom with others who were staying there which was not a problem at all for us. Easy parking out front too.

The house is located in the Alberta Arts district, a quick walk to many coffee shops, the local food co-op, and of course the famous Salt and Straw (best ice cream in town).

Overall, fantastic trip made only better by staying at the Frere house. Thank you, Kathryn!

  • An absolutely stunning house in a wonderful location. Kathryn is as warm and welcoming as her beautiful home, and the Alberta neighbourhood in which she is situated is full to the brim with interesting people, excellent food, cool bars and quirky shops. Couldn't have asked for more - thanks Kathryn! Caitlin and Rachael, Cambridge, UK.

  • Kathryn was an awesome host. She drove us to the library and the airport to pick up a rental car. I also had a friend cancel last-minute and she was able to make the adjustment quickly without charging me extra. Now that's excellent customer service!!! She was welcoming and there to help us with what we needed. Her home is conveniently located a few blocks from Alberta Street where you'll find wonderful restaurants, grocery shops, and bars.

  • The room and home were lovely, and the location was perfect. Parking was a breeze. The house was a short walk to Alberta Ave which is full of wonderful cafes, restaurants, and bars. I had to go to downtown for business while there, and the commute was easy. Kathryn is charming and takes excellent care of her home. She is wonderful hostess. I was very happy with my stay. I highly recommend the lovely Frere home.

  • I chose Kathryn's place because the bed seemed so cool...and it is! Just look at that frame. The house very well located. The place is uncluttered and comfortable. Kathryn was welcoming and gracious. Would definitely come back when in Portlandia.

  • The space offers the gifts of intentionality and privacy and comfort and a warmth like what a Southerner like me would hope to find in a home.

Kathryn is a professional in so many ways, from musicianship to being an airbnb host. I can't wait to see her again -- next time I'm bringing my trumpet !

  • Kathryn was a fantastic host. She was very accommodating to our group of five needing four separate beds and arriving at different times. The house is in a great neighborhood and Kathryn had plenty of recommendations on how to get the most out of it. Would definitely stay again and would not hesitate to recommend this place to others.
