About this listing
This huge room is on the top floor of the house overlooking the tree filled street. It is steps from the large vintage bath. There is an extra roll-away twin bed with a foam topper for a third guest. Discount for third guest for long term stays.
Thanks for your interest in The Frere House. In addition to The Queen Room there is another large room at this property, The Suite Room. You can rent the entire top floor as well which includes the two rooms AND a sleeping loft and can accommodate up to six guests (please see Alberta Movie/Music Home Top Floor).
Note from the owner: "I am so grateful to all the people who have stayed at The Frere House from around the world who have enriched my life with their many stories and have made themselves at home in this magical place. I'm very proud of the many favorable testimonials I've received. I do my very best to make everyone feel welcome and to make the house comfortable and I take all the suggestions to heart. The guests who would most appreciate staying here are those interested in having the "Portland Experience". The home is well kept, vintage, quirky and comfortable. The location is the best - close to fantastic restaurants, live music venues, shops, a park and public transportation. I hope to have many repeat customers and look forward to meeting many more new guests."
The "Frere (rhymes with air) House" is a gorgeous 1909 Victorian that will take you back in time. It was used in the feature film "Untraceable", considered for a "Grimm" episode and used in other various Indy films and projects.
"Wow!" is the common thing heard when folks enter the wainscoting filled entry way. The house has a "vibe" that is difficult to put into words. "Cozy" is a good one. "Homey" is another. "Unique", "Beautiful", Original" are a few others.
The main floor has a vintage kitchen with a one-of-a-kind antique sink, a large living and dining area with a big communal table, a sunny front porch with a swinging bench and a large back deck for relaxing.
There are two large upstairs rooms available (please see other listings for a description of the second upstairs room, a price for both together and for the Sunroom on the main floor). The upstairs rooms are both very large (approx. 220 square feet), have walk in closets, beautiful newly refinished hardwood floors and are steps away from a cozy bath with a giant claw foot tub. This particular room has three large windows that overlook the front yard, a comfy queen size bed with a huge wood canopy frame (another "Wow!"), a roomy walk in closet, various antique furnishings, a small writing desk, clean linens, free wi-fi and a cute (faux) fireplace/heater. A comfortable twin bed is available for a third guest.
The location of the house is as desirable as the house itself being just three blocks from the famed Alberta district, Portland's most active and sought after place to reside. Public transportation to everywhere is just three short blocks away. There is a large grassy lot adjacent in addition to the Frere yard that can be used by guests to throw out a blanket to soak up some sun, play frisbee or play some guitar.
The kitchen is stocked and good for light/normal cooking and solely for use by checked in guests only.
The uniqueness of the house, the neighborhood, the "vibe", the occasional song you may hear from Kathryn on the piano or guitar will make your stay at the Frere House something to remember. Please email if you have questions.
Note: The owner lives in the private, separate lower level of the property and is accessible for anything guests may need.
For something really different, add a lesson to your stay. Kathryn is an award winning singer, musician and songwriter who has had her music on the Official Grammy Ballot. She is an excellent instructor in Voice, Guitar, Bass, Piano as well as a songwriting coach. Perhaps we can arrange for you to sing with a band or inspire you to write a song.
There is a large communal area with a cozy living area and a dining room with a large table to eat and socialize.
Interaction with Guests
I live in the house and am available for questions and help when and if needed.
This is Portland's best neighborhood! It's just a perfect spot to stay in this city and all is within walking distance. The last Thursday (Alberta Street's monthly Mardi Gras) is something to see if you really want to have the "Portlandia" experience.
There are buses just three blocks away that are very simple to use to get to where you need if you won't have a car and even if you do (saves on parking fees). The Trimet website will give you info on point to point trips.
Other Things to Note
The cable TV is local cable (50 or so channels). We also have Netflix.
Laundry is available for those who are staying one month or longer with weekend hours at a charge of $5 per load.
For stays longer stays (two weeks or longer) there will be a mandatory cleaning of the rented space (vacuuming, dusting, etc., sheets washed, etc.). Guests are expected to clean up after themselves in their rooms and in the kitchen (dishes washed, counters wiped, floor swept if there are spills, etc). We discourage keeping food in the rooms to avoid Portland's known ant problem. We are proud we have no ants due to cleaning diligence and guests honoring this rule (there is lots of cupboard space and room in the fridge). The house has a thorough deep clean weekly but guests being mindful about their own cleaning make the home very pleasantly tidy at all times.
This is a smoke, pet and shoe free home. The 100 year old floors have just recently been re-done and cannot accommodate heels, wheels or animals. This room has a "Oh My God" Queen bed (usually what is heard when people see the bed) and an extra a comfy roll-away twin for a third guest. There is a two night minimum stay and a one month maximum.
This house is meant to be a calm, safe and creative space to stay. No outside guests allowed onto the premises without prior approval from owner. This address cannot be used to receive mail of any type.
We had a great stay here, walking distance to Alberta Street which we loved. The house is gorgeous and feels more like a shared house as there are other people staying in other rooms which I liked. There is a bus downtown a couple of blocks away which we used a lot, very handy. Lots of on street free parking. Would recommend to anyone.
Kathryn was warm, welcoming, and so kind! I was there for two quick nights, but felt absolutely comfortable. The room was large and beautiful, very airy, comfortable bed. The house is in the perfect location for walking to the Alberta Arts district for yummy food, local shopping, wine, and nightlife (or not!).
Kathryn was friendly and welcoming. Her tenant Chris had a big smile and was always around to answer questions.
I would be happy to unbolt the door for any guest that wants to use the back deck. It is pretty chilling this time of year and I keep it locked for safety. I would have happily opened it for Tom if I knew he wanted to go out there. I'm so happy he loved the house and had a great stay. Please come back! There is nothing like summer in Portland...
Although the host was not present, she was very accommodating and responsive via airbnb message and text. A beautiful old Victorian home a few blocks from a nice little strip in Portland. As it was my first time in Portland, I did not realize how essential a car was to staying in this neighborhood, but taxiing back and forth to the train station and appointments worked just fine.
Wonderful, serene, restored period home in super NE neighbourhood close walking distance to Alberta Street and Arts District and minutes to Lloyd Centre and Downtown by car. Nice vibe, Kathryn made us feel at home. Great room as well as common areas, particularly kitchen and lovely back deck.
Wonderful heritage home in very convenient NE Portland Alberta Arts District neighbourhood. In one word I'd describe the accommodation as"serene". Katheryn is so welcoming, but not overbearing, one feels like guest, not a paying customer.
