Where do I begin? Casa Tordesillas is remote, magical and stunningly beautiful. The light is constantly changing and, at times, clouds drift into the house. Birds and howler monkeys wake you before dawn, long after Chema has been up and busy with life.
One morning, we took off on horseback (the horses are gentle and magnificent) over the hills and through villages, stopping to buy some groceries which we packed into the saddle-bags. Another morning, I struck off alone along the path to the jungle brook where I climbed upstream to the deep pool fed by falls.
Marga is gracious and lovely. Her amazing cooking made the most of their garden, and her conversation was always thoughtful and stimulating. As I was the only guest for three of my four nights, there was lots of time for talk, and Chema and I locked horns a few times over such issues as a possible conspiracy by Big Pharma to prevent a simple cure for cancer becoming public knowledge (he pro, me con), and whether all dogs ought to be neutered (me pro, he con). I hope that he found these sometimes vehement discussions as fascinating as I did!
What they've accomplished on their land is astonishing, the result of many, many years of hard work. They definitely have a "world view" and are living it. Not many people can say the same.
Anyhow, I'll never forget my stay with these guys. You can only reach them by a bone-rattling dirt (or rock, rather) road and if you're doing it on your own, you MUST have a four-wheel. Once you're there, you're there... don't plan on heading off for dinner somewhere. Besides, you won't find any food as good as Marga's.
You might be lucky enough to experience a lightning storm. You're sure to experience something unique.
Many thanks to Chema and Marga. Please pat the dogs for me!
Chema and Margarita were wonderful hosts, they were very welcoming to me, my husband and my small children. Margarita's cooking was delicious, she even made a cake for my kids. The dome built by Chema on the second floor of the house was astonishing. The landscape is very mystical and serene, it was a true experience. Staying at their beautiful earth home has a highlight of our trip to Costa Rica.
We stayed with Chema and Marga for four nights over New Year's 2015. Chema and Marga were warm, enthusiastic, and hospitable hosts. They both are extremely committed to their lifestyle and eager to share information about sustainable living. Marga is a wonderful cook and all of her meals were delicious and healthy. We had a very nice time riding horses, who were extremely well behaved and easy (we are both fairly inexperienced), and even were able to gallop with them some. They took us to several neighboring villages and we also got to see many birds, mountains, and ocean views. We also took two really nice hikes; there were beautiful waterfalls and natural pools to swim in as well as challenging hikes through forests. The other guests were also very friendly and it was interesting to hear all of their stories over meals. It is truly a unique experience if you are looking to get off the grid for a little while and avoid the major tourist areas.
This place is a dream. Clouds sweep across the mountains and whirl around the property, and once cleared by the refreshing breeze, you can see a perfect view of the ocean. Andalusian horses grace the pastures and provide a fairy-tale like ambience to already pristine surroundings. Chema will fill your head with wisdom and stories, and Marga will delight you with her delicious cooking and warm presence. They treated me like family and it was the perfect welcome into Costa Rica, being the first place that I stayed. I would especially recommend this place if you want to learn about living a sustainable lifestyle. They're doing it right for sure, and the home is exquisitely designed.
We had a memorable stay at Casa Tordesillas during New Years Eve, escaping the hustle and bustle from the coastal villages.
Our girls (9 & 11) also absolutely loved the place and they still talk about it frequently (about horse training without pain, or trying to identify stars and planets in the sky).
Chema and Marga really built up an exceptional place in an amazing location (you see the ocean in the far distance and nothing but nature all around). The sounds are limited to jungle noises (such as howler monkeys).
It was also enlightening to see how few resources are actually needed to live a fulfilling life. The hike to the waterfalls was wonderful too, and we all enjoyed a relaxing swim and swinging from a tree branch into the water.
Because the road to the coast was washed away when we visited, it was quite a drive to reach the place, but it was definitely worth it.
We certainly hope to stay here again some time in the future.
We stayed at Casa Tordesillas for 3 days and it was a magical experience. Surreal surrounding, clean air, absolute peace and quite and of course very caring hosts made my trip to Costa Rica unforgettable. Wake up at 5:30 to see beautiful sunrise over the mountains, walk around barefoot to let your feet feel the cool mountain dew on the grass, walk up to the edges of the property to see the infamous strip Whale Tail, watch over the breakfast how the clouds swim to over the valleys and have a delicious candlelight dinner next to the real fireplace. I honestly cannot oversell this place, it is just magical. Chema and Marga have beautiful Andalusian horses, absolutely majestic creatures, that took us to the nearby isolate waterfalls via steep mountain trails. Also, there are few jungle trails and smaller natural pools near the property if you want to take a walk. House with a spacious dome, itself is also a work of art, Chema and Marga practically built it themselves including making the gates and furniture. Also ,Marga is an amazing cook so make sure you will ask her to cook for you. I doubt that any of the local dining spots can compete with her.
The only problem is the transportation, one way taxi from San Isidro itself will end up costing around $44 ,so plan accordingly.
Jema and marga are amazing hosts. They are inspiring generous and full of charm.
Marga is a magical chef and jema an inspiring visionary that can keep you all night with his stories and wisdom.
There place is one of the most beautifulll points around. Defenetly one of the highlight of our trip. Recommend with live

For us to have a guest is a way to share our way of life, to promote a sustainable life and to make friends.
Our main object is two fold, first is to simplify our way of life by practicing sustainable techniques and regenerative activities; second is to be minimizing our impact on the planet, that is, that our ecological footprint would be less and as we see it, is about quality of life instead of standard of living.
