Magical rural setting 5 min. from historic downtown Petaluma, CA. Easy drive to ocean, San Francisco, wine country. Indonesian cottage, king bed, private deck, hot tub, large luxurious bath room/sitting area. Famous biking route. Great breakfasts!

The Space

The antique Indonesian cottage is made of beautifully carved and colored teak wood, and is quiet, cozy and romantic with lovely views. It abuts a large private deck and hot tub. Just a few steps across the deck is the very large, luxurious and art filled private bathroom and sitting area.

Guest Access

Aside from the private deck, hot tub and bathroom/sitting room (with 6' tub and shower), guests can access 2.5 peaceful acres, woods and fields, a fantastic tree house and large redwood barn suitable for small gatherings.

Interaction with Guests

We enjoy interaction with our guests if they so desire.

The Neighborhood

Completely rural on most beautiful road famous around the world for bicycle trips towards the Pacific coast . Quiet, artistic neighbors. Acres of space on all sides before next homes. 6 beautiful Arabian horses in pasture next door. 5 minutes to historic downtown Petaluma and centrally located for short drives to all Sonoma county wine areas, the ocean and San Francisco.

Getting around

No public transportation here. Plenty of parking on site and short car or bike ride to transportation in downtown Petaluma.

Other Things to Note

In the 1970's this property was Swallowtail Studios, a famous glass blowers cooperative. The Grateful Dead played in the barn and hung out here...their manager lived just down the road. The barn is redwood, quite large and beautiful, with stained glass windows. It's suitable for small gatherings and is available for an extra fee.

  • Michelle and Bill are very kind hosts and create a tranquil, intimate setting. The studio is quiet, rustic and easy to get to. Breakfast was always delicious and we really enjoyed meeting other travelers that they host, including their treehouse! Wifi and cell use were easy to use.

Thank you for making a great experience and providing a beautiful space!

  • It's a charming little cottage in rural setting just outside of Petaluma. Bill and Michelle are friendly hosts and very helpful in recommending restaurants and places in the area (Marshall and Sonoma). We arrived after a long hike in Point Reyes, so soaking in the hot tub was a nice treat. Not super close to anything (rural setting, as I mentioned), but it's a beautiful and quiet spot that's about 20 min drive to downtown Petaluma, and within an hour drive from great hiking and food and wine country.

While we know Grace meant well with her kind review we would like everyone
to know that even though our place is very rural, we are very close (5-7
minutes) to downtown Petaluma, where there are wonderful restaurants of all
kinds and for all budgets, wine bars/tasting,etc. aside from all the other
great things to see and do. In addition there is fabulous hiking available
within 3 minutes of our place and we are within 30-45 minutes in every
direction (Sonoma, the North Coast, Healdsburg, San Francisco) of the best
hiking, food and wine tasting imaginable (other than right here in town)

  • Michelle and Bill were the definition of charming and welcoming hosts. They gave great directions, communicated quickly, and on top of that were both fascinating and interesting! Michelle amused us with stories of her former career as a nurse over a delicious breakfast she prepared, while Bill topped off our coffees and told us tales of meeting all the big bands back in the 60's and 70's

On top of the amazing hosts, the property itself is incredible! We especially enjoyed the hot tub under the stars and beautiful bathroom complete with imported stained glass and Michelle's fantastic artwork.

While you are there, make sure to check out the red barn that now serves as the couples art studio but once housed 2 week long Grateful Dead parties. Very cool!!

I can't emphasize enough what a wonderful time my boyfriend and I had here! We have stayed at with many air bnb hosts and this one is truly top notch and even I dare say a little magical.

  • The Swallowtail studios are an amazing place to stay: outside town, up in the beautiful secluded hills, nestled among the eucalyptus tree groves, and lovingly appointed by your wonderful hosts, Michelle and Bill. This property is very special and unique, and we had an amazing (if too short) stay. From soaking in the hot tub overlooking the hills at sunset, to a relaxing breakfast made with fresh herbs form the garden, we cannot recommend Swallowtail enough. Do yourself a favor and spend your next trip in the hills of Petaluma with Michelle and Bill.

  • What a cozy, comfy, cute and charming place! It was better than expected! The surroundings are beautiful and quiet; the cottage is clean and inviting. Don't miss the great breakfasts or the wonderful conversation with Michelle and Bill. I can't wait to come back when the "Taj Mahal" is ready for bookings! I highly recommend.

  • We were in town for a wedding, and weren't looking forward to the idea of staying in a hotel. This is our first experience with airbnb, and based on our experience here, we'll definitely be using it again. This is a beautiful place, with incredibly nice hosts, very cozy room, and super comfy bed. The hot tub was a great addition; sitting in it looking up at the stars was a great way to wind down after a big day. Although we didn't stay in it, I would highly recommend booking the tree house, which is a work of art and also looks really cozy. We were sorry to have to rush out in the morning and forgo a nice relaxing breakfast on the porch in the sun chatting with these great people.
