Located less than 100 meters from the sea and 300 meters from the Caniçal center, a fishing village with about 4,000 inhabitants in 12 km2. At a distance less than 300 meters are available 2 access to the sea and two pebble beaches. A little further away, about 1 km, is located Prainha, the only natural beach (with black sand) of Madeira and many points of interest that allow tourist footpaths of extreme beauty (eg access to Cais do Sardinha / Ponta de São Lourenço .)
In the Caniçal center there are several restaurants, mostly fish and seafood, and all kinds of trade (pharmacy, supermarkets, banks, post office, museum, etc ...).
The site has excellent access, because the freeway is located less than 1 km from the villa, and a uncovered parking is available in front of the house. The parish is served by sub-urban transport which connect to the municipalities limitrofes (eg Machico 2.5 km), the city of Funchal (less than 20 km) and the airport (5 km) expeditiously.
The high accessibility and proximity to the sea, with warm and crystalline water (with an average temperature of 21 º), the mountain and the sea view, the quality and comfort of the house and the existence of various footpaths nearby housing makes us consider the villa as a unique space for recreation associated with beach and nature.
Smoking is not allowed inside the house. Wheelchair acess is easy. Pets are only allowed in the house outdoor areas.
Nuno was a perfect host, and casa da baleia is just lovely. Recently redecorated and well appointed, I wasn't missing anything. Very comfortable!
I stayed for four nights, used the pool, sampled the local Canical cuisine: Muralhos was a fave, so close to the flat, reasonably priced and excellent fresh seafood.
I would recommend having a car as Funchal is about 20 minutes away, and most tours pick up from there. The roads around Madeira are excellent and well sign posted, it's a beautiful island that is definitely worth exploring.
I recommend seeing Ponto da Sao Laurenco - not far from Canical. Sunset from Paul do Mar also not to miss, there's a great little pub there called Maktub hostel, surf spot and popular for caipirnha.
Camara da Lobos another small fishing village near Funchal is a quaint place must try the pancha and Nikita (both local Madeira drinks).
(I'll be back

Nuno and his father were excellent hosts and went out of their way to make us feel very welcome, Nuno gave us lots of info on Madeira and the local area too! The apartment is great, the decking area, pool, and sea view just perfect - unfortunately we had terrible wet weather so couldn't make the most of it - but we enjoyed staying there nonetheless. A very quiet place and perfect to relax, within reach of a great walk on the north east corner, but still only 20 mins to Funchal (although you will need a mode of transport for this as the taxi's are not cheap!). Highly recommended! Thank you xx
A nice little apartment well located in the small village of Caniçal, this is a good base if you plan to hike in the north-east of the island ( Ponta de São Lourenço, Porto da Cruz, Santana, Caldeirão Verde,... )
Nuno gave was helpful and gave us good tips. The welcoming basket was really appreciated, and the kitchen had everything you need (salt, oil, pepper, aluminum foil, coffee,...)
Too bad the weather was a bit cold for the outdoor kitchen/bbq.
The swimming pool was nice to have after hiking in the levadas, although I must admit, I did not stay long in the cold water of March.
There's a good bakery 5 minutes away (by foot) that sells a rosquilha (potato bread), perfect for the sandwiches and addictive.
Important note : you need to have a car.
We felt really welcomed and had an amazing time at Casa da Beleia. Nuno and his family are very nice and welcomed us with local fruits and drinks. Nuno gave us really helpfull tips about the surroundings and the best restaurants in Caniçal.
We stayed at the east flat which was perfect for 2 people. The apartment and the house were really awesome, very clean and exactly as described in the pictures. The beds were very confortable, kitchen, bathroom, pool and the barbecue area are well equipped with everything you need.
We loved the view, the pool and that we could hear the waves. Caniçal is a good place to stay and awesome seefood restaurants, bars and the best bakery of Madeira within 5 minutes walking distance.
We really enjoyed our visit here and won’t hesitate to rent Casa da Beleia again. A perfekt place to stay and recover. Highly recommend Location and host!
What a fabulous place. My husband and I were looking for a relaxing break, and Nuno's place was absolutely ideal. From the moment we arrived, we were meant to feel welcome and relaxed. Nuno's brother Gonçalo picked us up from the airport (which was conveniently only 10 minutes from the apartment) and within minutes we were soaking up the gorgeous sun and swimming in the fresh water pool overlooking the bay. Gonçalo had also sent us a huge list of suggestions for activities to do while we were in Maderia. The flat was very comfortable and nicely decorated (we loved the palm wallpaper) and the neighbourhood, a small fishing village, had plenty of offerings for fresh fish for dinner (our favourites were Cafe Amarelo). We would suggest renting a car to make the most out of the island. We cannot wait to return (next time with friends).
