About this listing
Romantic guesthouse in the center/ the Blue Room.
A beautiful and romantic colonial guesthouse in Cartagena de Indias, in the vibrant and traditional Getsemani area, one of the last truly exotic places in the Caribbean, the most dynamic downtown location where new luxury boutique hotels, bars and restaurants sprawl. Positioned in a quiet street, away from traffic and commercial activities, and just a few feet from the Arsenal and the booming Calle del Guerrero night spots and at walking distance from all the best restaurants. The house is a mix of colonial and mediterranean style designed by award winning architect and decorated with african elements and maps brought back by the owner in his African journeys. All rooms are customed designed and fully equipped. The cotto floors with spanish ceramic accents help you cool down and unwind surrounded by an abundant tropical vegetation with adult mango and palm trees. Guests can relax in the patios and enjoy an open air tile jacuzzi on the terrace and a mirador/solarium with view on the Cathedral, the churches of San Pedro and La Trinidad and the Castillo San Felipe. The house is on a north-south axis and enjoys plenty of natural ventilation.
The Blue Room.
Single room with queen bed. It can be used as a double room though it's smaller than our other rooms. It's very cozy and with a modernist touch. Tones are blue and white. 400 count sheets, hard and soft pillows. The bathroom, with dark blue ceramic tiles, is small but sexy.
"...as part of a broader Colombian reawakening, the city is resurfacing with boutique hotels, fusion-seeking restaurants and new fashion labels that turn sleepy towns into global destinations. Tourists are descending on its galleries, strolling idly down its byways, reveling with locals at New Year’s Eve parties in public plazas. Travelers now call it Latin America’s hippest secret." The New York Times May 2, 2010
"Take a dash of faded colonial grandeur, then add a dose of sultry nightlife and an influx of cosmopolitan travelers seeking the next great Caribbean hot spot. Oliver Schwaner-Albright sets his sights on an emerging Colombian getaway that delivers all this and more." Travel + Leisure April 2008
"...recently, the Colombian port town of Cartagena has become an unlikely food destination, attracting the kind of culinary travelers who spend their vacations in Rome and Paris. And what they find is a city far more exotic, but no less adroit at catering to sophisticated palates...200-year-old Spanish colonial mansions refurbished with crisp interiors, trendy bistros that elevate plantains to haute fare, and theatrical rooms buzzing with dignitaries in starched collars and Windsor knots sipping minty rum drinks..." The New York Times October 26, 2008
"David Ebershoff visits this dreamy city by the sea, a place that wears its rich history as lightly as it does its languorous charm." Conde Nast Traveller March 2007

I wish I could leave 6 stars!
I found Markus’s listing through a friend in Bogota who recommended his place highly. I can definitely say that her recommendation was on point! Everything about the place was welcoming and comfortable.
The layout of the rooms is well designed with beautiful touches – a shower that opens to the sky, perfectly placed outlets and lights, plenty of towels, TV with Netflix, a well-stocked mini bar – who could ask for more?!
Everything is as clean and well-organized as a high-end hotel, but with the warmth and personality of a cozy B&B. Markus and Luis were so kind and welcoming, going far out of their way to make sure my visit was smooth and that I had answers for any and every question, from bike rentals to best restaurants.
The car service provided was especially helpful and made the entire process smooth and easy, both to and from the airport.
The neighborhood is a huge plus for your visit! You really get the sense that you’ve stepped out of the more touristic center as you join the locals to enjoy the ever-changing activities in the main square. It is lively, safe, comfortable and welcoming.
Long story short, stay with Markus if you want the perfect Cartagena experience!
This was a fantastic experience! Marcus and his crew gave me a great introduction to Cartagena -- starting with a completely unexpected, but much appreciated arrangement of transportation from the airport to the B&B. That was awesome.
The place itself is charming, comfortable, and well-situated in the Getsemani neighborhood. It's about a 10 minute walk to the center of the city, but there are great restaurants, cafes, and street vendors starting about 60 yards from the front door. Marcus has created a really useful map of the city that identifies sights and restaurants of all kinds and Luis, his assistant, gives great recommendations and directions.
Breakfast and coffee were delicious...and you will probably be joined during your meal by a gentle turtle who wanders the courtyard in search of fallen leaves.
It's really a remarkable place and everyone there does a great job making you feel welcome. I hope to return at some point.
The Staff here was very friendly and helpful. A car was waiting at the airport for us. And Luis was immensely helpful, ready to answer all questions. Complimentary Breakfast was one of the best parts. Very simple but a perfect way to start the day. Very chill. The whole property is very narrow and compact, but it had so much charm. Plush plant life everywhere, big beautiful turtles just walking around, and a 3'x4' shower with an open air ceiling 12' up. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. And the location was perfect for us. Not right up in the mix, but a lazy stroll over to where all the landmarks are. I would absolutely recommend staying here.
Marcus had someone waiting for me at the airport when I arrived. When I got to the house Julio was there to welcome me and give me a detailed account of the area, places to eat, and a tour of the house. The house is lovely, the room emasculate, and the location was prime. Marcus is awesome! He went above and beyond to make me feel at home...when I needed pain meds, Marcus supplied! They took care of me like we were family. There is no better place that I could imagine spending these few days in Cartagena! I highly recommend staying here!
This was my first time using Airbnb, and if this experience is the norm, I will definitely be back. Marcus and Luis were more than helpful, very quick responding to questions, and made our stay on Cartagena a good one. In particular, they pointed out events (music festivals, good spots to watch some matches with locals) that we would never have known about ourselves, which really enhanced our stay.
Overall, we enjoyed staying so much that my girlfriend and I were already discussing a return with some other couples before we had even left. We would certainly stay here again (and say hello to the tortoises once more).
Amazing experience! Everything one could ask for and more. Super accommodating, picked me up from airport, arranged for friend to be picked up; give you a map of all the close hot spots; amazing breakfast FEAST served. A steal! Highly recommend!
Marcus and his staff have made me feel very welcome and at home during my stay. Maria Jose picked me up at the airport and gave me some tips on where to go. When I arrived Luis showed me the ropes. Air conditioning works perfectly (and you'll need it in the heat ), there are fresh towels provided everyday. Even though I was a solo traveller they provided me with 4 towels (you'll need it from the regular showers). Breakfast was excellent - love the fresh fruit and juice they provide everyday.
Also the rooms have Apple TV and Netflix - if you're into that
