About This Listing
Hi there. I have a really special space to share in a wonderful, convenient location. This 1930's two bedroom stucco is located on a multi-home property on a quiet residential street just a few minutes walk from downtown, the Boardwalk, and Main Beach. You can hear the sound of the waves when the wind blows just right. Sunny and bright, the house sits on a large lot, set back from the street. The lot is shared with another two other rentals (Simple Studio and Lil Loafer) as well as two occupied houses.
Sun Stucco is creamy white, clean, airy and stylishly decorated. It features refinished wood floors, original tile work in the kitchen and a bath and outdoor patio area. The light in this house is fantastic! You feel like you are in an old movie set in Palm Springs.
The people living on the property are writers, academics, designers, teachers. There is a eight year old living on the property as well. Kid friendly! Old dogs welcomed.
Please enjoy the patio for BBQs and outdoor eating. And the fire pit for roasting smores and telling stories.
Interaction with Guests
You will meet and possibly hang out with most everyone on the property including some fellow travelers staying in our other rentals
Our neighborhood is a quiet steer right in the middle of everything. Just over the bridge (10 min walk?) is downtown. If you head the opposite direction you will find the Boardwalk and the beach.
Hello and welcome to Riverside Ranch! This is a mutli-unit property with a lot going on: kids, garden, building projects, etc. We would like to share this space with you and hope for you to be courteous and kind in return. This is not a party pad. We have young children and pets and close neighbors. No excessive drinking or drug use. No loud noise after 10pm or before 9am. No cigarette smoking on the property. And remember, this is the front stucco you're renting!
Please clean up after yourselves and respect the space of others on the property. We have put our most beloved treasures in to furnish the place and we hope they will be safe from kids and animals. Thank you and enjoy!
We were in Santa Cruz with friends for a concert, so the house was adequate for a single night's stay. The house is very cute and well decorated. We played guitar and sang in the living room. The tenants in the front house were very friendly. Pets are allowed, so that's great for a traveller who doesn't like to leave the pet at home.
Two things. The beds are old, full-size beds, so might be small and uncomfortable for some couples to share. It was fine for me and my boyfriend but our friends were uncomfortable and had trouble sleeping. Also, the bathroom was dirty like it had not been cleaned in a while.
We enjoyed the close proximity to the beach that Sun Stucco afforded us. The house is cute with lovely lighting, a compact kitchen, and cozy living room for sitting around the table with friends. Street parking was ample, and Madeline was easy to communicate with. A good launch point for a Santa Cruz getaway!
My friends and I spent one night at Madeline's Riverside Ranch and we would definitely recommend it to others. The place is lovely with lots of character and really warm (perfect for a chilly night in Santa Cruz). The location is absolutely great; you can either walk to the beach or drive for a few minutes. Madeline was really responsive to my e-mails which made all the arrangements and communication very smooth.
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights at the end of October. Overall our stay was pleasant and the location of the house was really convenient. The living area was spacious and nice, although the bedrooms were very small and basic, for example there were no bedside lights or tables etc. Also, the bathroom was incredibly compact (even for a Londoner!).
Later in the evenings and early mornings it was also a bit chilly and would have been nice to have a heater. Lastly, the living room is lovely and light given the big windows, however these do look out directly into the courtyard and on to the street so is a bit like being in a fishbowl! (There are no curtains).
Madeline the host was accommodating and also let us hook up to her wifi.
Madeline and Kyle were very kind to our family of four and accommodating. We appreciated the freshly made beds and bedding (which felt clean and comfortable), the kindness their family showed to us in sharing apples and even a scooter and boogie board that were stored just outside our cottage (my kids thought these came with the place but were in fact the private property of K&M, but they lended to us, very nice!). They are nice people.
Our family had a fun weekend overall in Santa Cruz but were disappointed in the Sun Stucco. We think vintage can be beautiful (lived in a 1906 craftsman just a few years ago) and appreciate shabby chic, but some elements of the rental just seemed shabby.
The areas that could use urgent improvement:
- The really cruddy bathroom. I don’t know if those are permanent stains in the tub, sink, at the base of the toilet and on the linoleum, but it just feels yucky trying to get clean in a space that feels so dirty. If refinishing the porcelain and new linoleum are too expensive, the owners might consider getting a tub basin liner and placing some fresh bathmats in there so guests can walk on a clean surface.
- The couch cushions need real slipcovers, the blanket wrapped around them kept sliding out and needing to be retucked.
- The pillow on the couch should be replaced, it’s awfully ratty inside (case on the pillow is fine). When we saw how the pillow inside looked, we didn’t want to put our heads down
- The living room rug could use a good steam cleaning or replacement
Generally, the floors need to be swept; both under the beds and under the couch. I saw old cheerios under the couch every time I sat down in the rocker, and we didn’t have cheerios with us so who knows how long they’ve been there? There were giant dust bunnies and dirt under the beds and couch too. I dropped my pencil when I was working on a crossword and hesitated to reach under to fish it out.
Not having enough towels, a dirty fridge and a gas leak smell were minor inconveniences that Kyle quickly rectified, thank you.
To me, the value of this rental is closer to $125 or $150 a night, not the $420 we spent for two nights.
This beautiful home was a lovely place to stay for me and my family. The property has so many charming touches, mid-century stove and fixtures, sun-filled garden. The host family is very friendly and helpful. This is a great place to stay if you're looking for a taste of the real (or rather surreal) Santa Cruz. The location is super convenient to the beach, downtown and everything else.
We had a great weekend at the Sun Stucco! We were four adults and one baby, and everything was fine. The beds and rooms are small, but quite comfy. The kitchen lacked some essentials (coffee, pepper, glasses) but we made the best of it. The place was a bit old and dusty, but full of charm... And the neighbors / hosts were wonderful, friendly and discreet. Best of all, the location couldn't be beat, blocks from downtown, highways, boardwalk and beaches... and on a quiet side street. We would certainly come again. Thank you!
