Our cozy guest bedroom comfortably accommodates two, looks out over gardens and trees, and is adjacent a bathroom for exclusive use with shower and washing machine. Tranquil countryside surroundings, and just 8 kms from busy seaside port Horten.

The space
We live in a two-story Norwegian farmhouse, built 1920, on two acres, near the town of Horten. We offer one large guest bedroom with comfy queen-size bed that looks out on a tranquil natural setting. There is a bathroom for exclusive guest use next door to the bedroom.

Home-made organic breakfast is included. Organic evening meals are available at reasonable prices.

The downstairs living area is open to guests. Wireless internet is available throughout the house.

In the main house is a large kitchen, dining room, living room, two outdoor terraces. We also have organic vegetable gardens, goats and one cat.

There are many uncrowded beaches in the area, on Oslo Fjord (just 6 kms away), and numerous historic Viking sites. There are many bicycling opportunities (bike trails and country roads). You can also wander in forests and fields.

There is excellent cross-country skiing just out the backdoor in winter, and prepared, lighted cross-country ski trails nearby.

The main train line (to Oslo, northbound, and Torp airport, southbound) is just 2 kms away (Skoppum station). Access to the main freeway, E18, is just a little over 1 km away. Oslo is 1 hour and 20 minutes by train, and a little less driving. Torp airport is 25 minutes away by driving and about 35 mins. by train. Rygge airport is one hour away (including 30 minute ferry trip). Airport pick-up available at both Torp and Rygge for a fee.

The village of Skoppum, 2 kms away, has a large Kiwi grocery store and post office. The town of Horten (pop. 25,000, and 8 kms away) has many restaurants, live-music venues, shops, parks and museums. There is a municipal bus stop five minutes away for trips into both Skoppum and Horten. There is a ferry in Horten that regularly crosses Oslo Fjord to the town of Moss. Norway's national photography museum, Preus Museum, is located in Horten. The former site of a major Norwegian naval base, Horten also has a large Naval Museum, including an accessible 1960's era submarine. A good city museum features authentic glimpses into the way locals lived in the past. The artist Edvard Munch's summer house is preserved as a museum in the nearby town of Åsgardstrand. The ancient Viking burial grounds, Borrehaugene, are very close. A large Viking Hall, built according to authentic standards, and a Viking museum, are nearby. There is an international biennial Viking Festival and market in early July (2014, 2016, 2018).

What makes our place unique is the tranquility. You can sit out on the east-facing terrace and eat breakfast in the morning sunshine, and eat dinner in the evening sunshine on the west terrace. There are about 21 hours of daylight here at Summer Solstice. We also occasionally see the Northern Lights here in the darker months.

Guest access
A coffee maker and kettle are available in the bedroom along with a selection of organic teas and coffee. A small refrigerator, microwave oven, kettle, coffee maker and toaster are available in the dining area downstairs. The living room, outdoor terraces, gardens, etc., are all open to guests. We have bicycles that guests can borrow. There are excellent bike trails between Skoppum and Horten.

What I love about our neighborhood, called a "gren" in Norwegian, are our neighbors, the stunning pastoral views, the symphony of bird song in summer, the pristine tranquilty after a snowfall in winter, and our access to a thriving seaside town of 25,000 just 10 minutes away by car.
