Spacious, light-filled guest house right in the heart of all that's delicious in Houston. Many of the best restaurants/bars are within walking distance, yet you can enjoy the comfort, quiet, privacy of a home-away-from-home. Easy access to everything
This spacious, loft-style guest house is separate from the main house and has an upstairs bedroom overlooking the dining area. Off the bedroom, there's a balcony with a screen door to enjoy the morning breeze while sipping on your coffee or tea from the excellent coffee shop just two blocks away. A soaring, two story window fills the apartment with light filtered through the backyard trees.
The bedroom has new furnishings including a queen bed with fresh linens. Don't worry if you overpack! There is a large dresser and plenty of closet space both upstairs and downstairs. If your clothes are wrinkly, touch them up with the iron/ironing board that you'll find in the small closet just outside the bathroom.
The bathroom, just off the bedroom, has a corner shower, supplied with towels for four guests. We've also stocked nearly any toiletry you may have forgotten, as well as other supplies such as band-aids, aspirin, pepto, mosquito spray, sunscreen, and a hairdryer should you need it.
The comfortable living room, dining area and galley kitchen are downstairs. The living room has a full size sleeper couch that will sleep two and an oversized chair for comfortable lounging. There's a flat screen TV that is bluetooth ready with a ROKU for streaming shows over high-speed, secure WiFI (password provided).
The kitchen is stocked with basics including a French press, pots, pans, a microwave, 4-burner stove, and all the utensils you'll need to enjoy your stay. There will be a six pack of local beer chilling in the refrigerator to welcome our guests!
I'm slowing building out our AirBnBGuidebook (click on the "Map" tab above the photos). You may also find information about Houston, events and more on our F B page. Search for MaisonDerriereForRent.
Since it's a separate unit, everything in the unit is completely available for the guests to use. Mi casa es su casa, as they say! Guests should even feel free to harvest herbs and veggies from the garden.
Interaction with Guests
We have a lockbox on the door for maximum flexibility in check-in/check-out. We are friendly and happy to share our knowledge of the city and the neighborhood but we let our guests set the pace of our interactions. I usually try to introduce myself but our guests, for the most part, really seem to like to be left to their own devices which we're happy to do as well!
Montrose is in the center of all the action inside the 610 loop in Houston. It's where you'll find many of the award-winning, nationally acclaimed restaurants and bars you've read about. You're as likely to enjoy the best $2 breakfast taco you've ever had as well as a 5-star paired dining experience.
It's a leisurely stroll to Midtown for clubs, bars, and eateries for the 30-something set. Via the Washington Flyer, it's easy to get to/from the Washington Avenue corridor that appeals to the 20-30 somethings. We're minutes from downtown, with world class theatres, opera, and symphonies as well as HQ for hundreds of Fortune 1000 companies.
Houston is home to the Rockets, Astros, Texans, Aeros, and the Dynamos. Every March is two weeks of the Houston Livestock & Rodeo Show - one of the largest in the world. In addition to our professional teams, we have numerous other sport teams and events such as the Houston Roller Derby and UFC. Our guest house is a great launching pad for any sports fans!
Just a few minutes by car down Montrose Blvd, visitors can take in the Houston Museum District including the Museum of Fine Arts, Contemporary Art Museum, Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Zoo, Hermann Park and the renowned Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel. Just down the road from there is the world class Houston Medical Center, Rice University and Rice Village. The Houston Galleria, known for its high-end shopping and ice-skating rink, is within a 15 minute drive.
The location and gracious space is ideal for both leisure and business travelers who want all the amenities and privacy of home.
Houston Hobby Airport (HOU) is 20 minutes away by car. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is between 30-45 minutes away. In Montrose, Midtown, and Downtown there is a new bicycle share/rental program (free for 60 min, $5/day rental), in addition to buses. There is also METRO Rail from Downtown through Midtown and the Museum District. And there are several bus stops within a block or two. That said, this is still very much a car town and I'd recommend renting one while here.
Other Things to Note
I don't often cook for our guests but I do stock the refrigerator with eggs, english muffins, butter. And we also provide juices, water (bottled, filtered, sparkling), a variety of sodas, milk, almond milk, and local beer. The pantry has oatmeal, coffee, a variety of teas, hot chocolate mix. There's also some canned goods as well as some snacks such as raw almonds, raisins, dried cranberries, and fruit & nut bars. We welcome our guests to enjoy any and all of it.
If you plan on cooking, you'll find all the basics (salt, pepper, olive and canola oils) as well as some extras (soy sauce, hot sauce, sriracha, ketchup, mustard). The knives are sharp and there are pots, pans, pyrex, colander, toaster and other cooking tools for your use -- even measuring cups!
The bathroom is stocked with hair dryer, spare toothbrushes (in case you forgot yours), shampoo, conditioner, body wash, aspirin, Pepto, band aids, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, Q-tips, feminine hygiene products, shaving cream, lotion, and more.
I'm sorry but we cannot accept pets. Smoking is permitted outside or on the balcony (please close the door before lighting up). Please use ashtrays provided. Parking is on-street, don't block the driveway. Please do be considerate of us and our neighbors by keeping noise down after midnight. Rather than make the bed (as most of our guests have), do feel free to strip the bed and pile linens and towels on the floor. And we hope you'll treat our little guest house as you would your own home!
We came for a weekend wedding and really enjoyed our stay. The pictures were accurate, location was perfect, and the host was great! She was very helpful. Sent a very detailed welcome email before we arrived and If we needed anything she was really helpful And quick to respond. Would definitely recommend and stay next time
The guest house was just right: easy access to the Museum District, good local eateries, and most of all, a warm welcome and good conversation from JoAnn. Delightful accommodations; nice garden.
JoAnn was an AMAZING host! This cute little back private house was a gem. Perfect for being in the middle of Montrose and was able to walk anywhere I needed to go. She stocked the pantry and fridge of essentials and some things I wouldn't have thought to have handy. JoAnn was always easy to get in touch with if there was anything I needed. I will be staying with her every time I come to Houston if the place is available! I have a feeling that she has spoiled me as this was my FIRST Airbnb experience.
This is my second time staying here. This place is excellent! It's located in the Montrose neighborhood which is walkable to everything you need from groceries to bars. Plus you are close to downtown, Med Center, and so on. The place is loft style with a living room/full kitchen downstairs and bedroom/balcony/bathroom upstairs. It is very well stocked, clean, quite, and cozy!
Nice private location in a great neighborhood. With all the goodies provided by our host and a quick walk to Wholefoods on day one, we were set for our stay. Easy to come and go as we needed or unwind after all the coming and going! Enjoyed walking around the neighborhood for coffee, restaurants or art supplies (unexpected bonus). Also great information provided on the Maison Derriere(website hidden)page and pre-arrival emails.

== What I'm Like as a Guest ==
I'm extremely respectful, trustworthy, and tidy as a guest -- so much so that many people have even invited me back to house sit for them! I can be as quiet or as gregarious as my hosts. I'm quite independent but always love good company. Since I own my own business, I work a lot. But I also play a lot. This tends to mean I get very little sleep! However, as a guest in someone's home, I respect the rules (and hours) of the house.
I'm just as comfortable in a resort as I am in a plush, fully catered campground. I generally prefer staying with friends or renting apartments when I travel. If reliable, frequent, safe public transportation is available, I prefer to use it than rent a car. I usually only travel with a carry-on suitcase (with ukulele!) and a laptop, depending on destination. I would rather go to a farmers market than a clothing store any day of the week. I see the value in taking tours but would rather explore on foot.
