The Space

Hi there! We are Fiona and Brian and our 8 year-old son Christopher who are delighted to welcome you to Nelson. We are working artists who love to create beautiful spaces, garden, travel, and meet people from other places. This charming suite is compact and bright and located just 2 blocks from Nelson's main street. With 2 bedrooms, a bathroom with extra-large clawfoot tub and stackable washer/dryer, foyer, and open plan kitchen and living space, the suite is an ideal space for 2-3 people. One bedroom has a queen-size bed and the other, which doubles as an office, has a single bed. Features include custom leaded glass windows, in-floor heating, hand-made pottery and attention to detail throughout. The space is very clean and fully furnished. The full kitchen is equipped with appliances and other items such as cappuccino maker, toaster oven, pots and pans, baking dishes, plates, bowls, cups, glasses, cutlery, utensils, dish towels, and more. There are also bath and hand towels, linens, duvets, pillows and anything that would make your stay comfortable. The suite has an exceptional location, so everything downtown is close; it is 2 to 5 minutes by foot to restaurants, grocery stores, shops, theatres, coffee shops. It is a 15 minute walk uphill to the railway track or mountain bike trails or 15 minutes downhill to the beach at Lakeside Park. There's so much to explore from here! We have 2 bikes available if you are not too tall, and if you come with a car, there is on-street parking available in front of the house. The house has another suite upstairs and the tenants are the awesome owners of a downtown art business that you will soon get to know ...

Fiona communicated superbly. Great value for money. We would 100% stay again. Fiona provided parking pass and handover was seamless. A great place to stay.

  • We enjoyed the initial communications with the host in preparation for our arrival. Unfortunately, our experience after arrival was disappointing.

This suite is a "buyer beware"! It does not approach the expectations based on the descriptions given on the AirBnB site. It is a basement suite in an old house. Everything is small, from the main bedroom where the soft bed is stuffed against the walls on three sides, giving no room to move around the bed, to the single, small and poorly-lit-mirror in the bathroom, which is inadequate for personal use.

When we arrived, the host tried to be helpful to compensate for the soft bed, but then was not available to address the other issues that arose. The air of the suite was very musty and windows could not be opened because of the cold temperatures outside. The suite took over 12 hours to achieve an acceptable warmth because the in-floor heating had not been turned on prior to our arrival. When we went to the host's residence to discuss things, we found the yard and stairway to her door strewn with piles of dog feces. The host was away for the day and had previously indicated that she would be out of town the following day.

We stayed one night of the three we had booked, and due to the cancellation policy of the host, we were not fully reimbursed for the remaining nights.

We would not recommend this place.

    Response from Fiona:

I enjoyed initial communications with Robert and anticipated their 4-hour late arrival. Via email, Robert said that "the only special request at the moment would be for hypoallergenic bedding," so I assured him that there were no feathers, which pleased him. I had no idea they would be difficult and high-maintenance guests. I need to correct some of their comments. The bnb is advertised as a 'charming heritage suite,' which it is. The original house was built in 1908, classified heritage, yet the inside decor and mechanics are completely new. The main house was fully renovated and restored by a contractor in 2008 and the lower floor bnb suite was built new in 2011. The suite is small and complete, as indicated in the word 'compact.' I designed the queen bed to fit precisely between 3 walls, like a bed nook. I'm sorry the guests found this design feature troublesome and also that the stylish mirror and lamp above the sink did not meet their needs. Interestingly, Marie neglected to tell me, until her arrival at 8:30 that night, that she had a bad back and required a hard mattress. The box spring and mattress are firm and comfortable and everyone, including a 3-week summer guest with back issues, said the bed was great. To accommodate Marie, my husband cut a piece of plywood which we inserted under the mattress while the guests were out for dinner. I left them a note to wish them a good rest. There are no issues with air quality or heating, period. When the guests came over to our house the next day, our two large Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Robert said that Marie loved this breed) had left their habitual daily droppings along the front path. I had asked my husband to clean them up as I went out, but he hadn't done that by the time the guests came by. He did fetch me immediately from the conference 2 blocks away, but the guests had already left so there was no conversation.

  • The property is an extremely small basement suite. Although advertised as a 2 bedroom, the second room is so small it is difficult to open the door without hitting the bed or dresser. The apartment was had poor circulation and was quite noisy (street level with loud owners living above). The washroom does not have windows and the shower can only be used with a fully enclosing shower curtain (to protect the walls) which is very claustrophobic. The place is far too small with poor air circulation and very overpriced. I would not recommend it to anyone.

    Response from Fiona:

The suite is a bright, compact and charming lower floor of a small character house, as indicated in the description and photos. It is beautifully finished, furnished, and situated, with all amenities for a short-term stay. It is reasonably priced for a fully furnished sweet little space located so close to downtown.

There are windows on three sides, except in the bathroom. The suite has in-floor heating, fully opening thermal pane windows for cross-ventilation, and exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Unfortunately, Paulina and Danielle caused some damage with their bicycles and lack of care.

There is an extra-large claw foot tub with a showerhead, overhead shower rail and 360-degree curtain to prevent water from damaging the walls. During the pre-arranged cleaning in the first week, I found the bathroom floor and walls wet and half the shower curtain removed. I asked Paulina about this in an email but she did not respond. Had she let me know that she felt claustrophobic, I would have purchased and installed a clear shower curtain. I have done that now.

The suite is too small for two single people with loads of sports gear, clothes and luggage, for an extended stay. The second bedroom is more often and better used as an office, though it doubles as a bedroom when requested. We set up the 9-drawer dresser and a captain's bed especially for Paulina and Danielle, as they needed separate sleeping spaces. We have replaced the dresser and bed in favour of a desk and two chairs, until a second bedroom is again required.

  • Our trip and stay in Nelson, BC was awesome. The suite is conveniently located and incredibly furnished. Fiona met us when we arrived and right away made us feel welcome and at home.

We made the suite our home base as we took day trips to the many beautiful spots nearby. It felt as coming home, with all the amenities that home has to offer.

Fiona kept in touch periodically and her energetic and kind personality completed our great experience. Highly recommend this suite for either a short or extended stay in Nelson.

  • Our stay in Nelson was made all the more wonderful by the charming and comfortable accommodation provided by Fiona Brown. The suite is clean, airy, well appointed and Fiona is completely lovely - very helpful but allowed us complete privacy. High recommended for a single or couple visiting beautiful Nelson BC.

  • Fiona Brown's suite in Nelson deserves five stars. We were made to feel very welcome.
The compact suite has a well appointed kitchen, fullsize appliances and everything you need to prepare your own food, including an expandable dining table if you invite dinner guests. The beds are so comfortable and there is ample closet space. The highlight of the bathroom is the deep cast iron tub and the red decor -all beautifully done.
The suite is very well located, just a short walk to Baker Street and great shopping, public library, banks, coffee shops and restaurants. (We highly recommend Le Soleil Levant Bakery).
We look forward to returning to this ideal home base on our next trip to visit friends and relatives in Nelson.
Thank you Fiona for your hospitality.

I love to travel, connect with people, share life experiences, and create art. I love my family and friends and 2 rambunctious Rhodesian Ridgeback hounds. I love to hike mountains, walk in the forest, cycle long distances, cross-country and skate ski, ride horses, dance, create beautiful spaces, dig in the garden, build things out of wood and found objects, make pottery and handmade books, draw, design, recycle and upcycle, read, learn languages, laugh. I love to swim in clean lakes, swing in hammocks, add to cairns, create art with children, make masks and dress up, eat vegetarian food, follow a 100 mile diet, and maintain a low environmental footprint.
