Nature Observatorio is a beautiful treehouse suspended 25 meters up on a tree in the middle of the jungle in the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge at the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. To arrive we will walk for about 45 minutes inside the forest from where we park the car. Observatorio has two bedrooms where can sleep up to 4 persons. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price as well as fruits, drinks and snacks. You can climb yourself up or you can be comfortable pulled up with an elevation system. Its a modern unique design, not a single nail is harming the tree. We use solar panels for leds lights, an eco toilet and shower with rain water.
This project is only for adventure and nature lovers.
If you don't want to spend the night there you can just visit it for a half or full day tour.
Enjoy wonderful nature hike through primary forest, exercise yourself climbing the tree with ropes, and get the fresh air from ocean and the incredible views of trees, animals and birds from the canopy.
Any question don't hesitate to ask!
Bring your hiking shoes, long pants ( trousers), and your cameras !
Before climbing you will get a short lesson on how to pull yourself up with the ropes!
It's lot of fun!
We knew from the beginning of our trip that the treehouse was a special place. We were not disappointed in anyway, all of our exceptions were exceeded!! Peter met us and made us feel great right away, we felt brought into the community and welcomed into the heart of Manzanillo!
On the hike up to the treehouse Peter spotted monkeys, frogs, tracks and birds and he explained how every form of life is connected and vital to the healthily functioning of the rainforest eco-system.
The climb up to the treehouse was a great challenge that made us feel exhilarated! Once in the treehouse we had a front row 360 degree view into the canopy of the jungle.
Chestnut Toucans, Mealy Parrots, a Crested Guan (bird), Woodpecker and the Olingo (are neighbor aka cookie monster who lived above the treehouse) all made an appearance.
At night the insect world takes center stage in the soundscape and gives way to the birds and mammals again who chant there own sun salutations in the early morning light.
There was a rainstorm overnight that cooled us off nicely. When we awoke we had an auspicious visit from the reptile kingdom (an Eyelash Viper) We used the guide books Peter and Jason left for us to figure out how to treat the situation. We gave our new friend a wide berth until Peter arrived and shared his wisdom on how to treat the snake. Peter skillfully removed the snake (not before I took a lot of pictures for our photo album) It was actually pretty docile for a viper ;)
Jason and Peter were both wonderful and incredibly helpful. We wished we could have stayed longer it was a highlight of our whole trip to Costa Rica.
We would highly recommend a visit to the treehouse and would definitely come again or visit another treehouse that Peter builds in other areas.
We had an amazing experience in the treehouse! From the hiking to the climbing to the observation of the wonderful jungle around fron the hammocks :) everything has been said in the other comments. If you come to Puerto Viejo/Manzanillo, do not miss it!
Where to start. First off, hiking through the lush forest with Peter and Jason as our guides was such an awesome unique experience. Peter pointed out many different things that we would not have seen otherwise. Upon arriving at the treehouse spot, both myself and my girlfriend were stunned by the amazing structure suspended 80 ft above us. Such an impressive show of engineering, executed by Peter himself. The climb up the tree was rewarded by a beautiful view of the forest canopy, definitely not something you get to see normally. The night was also an interesting experience, speckled with many different wild life noises. Waking up early in the morning was muy romantico.. The light hit everything in such a nice way. Peter also came and made us a delicious and simple breakfast. All in all, it's an awesome experience that I can promise you will not have anywhere.
We had the best time with Peter & Jason! It was a true adventure and we learned a lot about the environement! Its just magical sitting in the treehouse and listening to all the 'jungle-sounds'! Thanks so much for the time up in the canopy!! The bushman & his swiss girlfriend
Our stay with Peter was the highlight of our time in Costa Rica. From moment we arrived, Peter was warm and welcoming. As our stay progressed (we stayed 3 nights) we began to understand how honest, committed, and true to purpose this former structural engineer is to preserving the land. At the start of our visit, Peter met us at a local restaurant and showed us the way to the property located on a private reserve. At the entrance to the reserve, we also met Felix, one of the local guides and an Indian (native) from Panama that would assist Peter in making sure our trip was fun and safe. After donning rubber boots, we began our walk into the jungle. Note that there is a 30-45 minute hike through creeks and muddy hillsides to get to the treehouse so come prepared with clothes that can get dirty and a backpack to leave your hands free for hiking. Once arriving at the treehouse, Peter and Felix taught us how to climb. Climbing up into the treehouse is an experience in itself - one that initially seemed scary but soon became fun and exciting once we felt comfortable with our new skills. And it is totally worth all the work it takes to get into the treehouse! The house itself is a suspended from the tree, 25 meters above ground. The workmanship is top-notch and the views are unparallelled by anything else in the area. Each evening for dinner, Peter would bring us food from a local restaurant personally going back through the jungle and then leave us to enjoy the birds, monkeys and all the amazing sounds, sights and smells of the jungle. He would return in the morning, and after serving us breakfast we would repel down and then explore the area. Peter is not only your host, he is your guide through the forest. We were not able to take the full day hike because the ground was too muddy and slippery due to an unusual amount of rain. Later in our visit, Felix left and was replaced by Jason, who was also a wonderful assistant to Peter in making sure our hikes and climbs were all safe and fun. Peter didn't fail to think of any detail, even bringing me a yoga mat because I expressed interest in practicing yoga during my visit. But what impressed me the most was Peter's passion for the jungle. He has a unique relationship with the forest and with the trees and his passion for nature can't help but rub off on you when you stay here. We trusted Peter completely and would recommend this place to anyone who wants a serious adventure, an unique experience, and an above-the-top experience of the jungle. We can't wait until he builds his next Observatorio in South America so we can visit!
After a 2-week trip around Costa Rica, we could not have asked for a better New Year's Eve experience in Peter's Treehouse. I can only echo all of the positive comments you will find in the other reviews of this property!
The hike to the tree was fun and immersive. It was hard to believe that we were just a short distance from Manzanillo as we disappeared into the jungle. Peter was an excellent guide and was extremely friendly and encouraging. Pulling yourself up into your retreat in the canopy is very rewarding. The food was excellent, the space was comfortable, and the structure kept us dry even through a heavy overnight rain shower.
We were inspired by Peter's passion for creating a harmonious structure in the middle of Costa Rica's primary rainforest. Hearing his vision for taking this concept to other parts of the world was exciting and we cannot wait for the opportunity to visit Peter again on another continent!
This was by far our favorite experience during our honeymoon. We didn't even realize what we were getting ourselves into. There are a lot of places that claim to be treehouses, but I think this is the only place that can truly make that claim.
It's important that people understand it is a full experience, once you are up in the tree you have to stay unless Peter comes to help you down, but he is very ameniable to your plans and can help as needed. Once we went up, we didn't want to come back down, we just stayed up there for two night. We were able to see more animals from up there then down on the ground, and it was so peaceful and relaxing. It was like camping on top of the forest canopy. This wasn't the height of luxury, but for being in the middle of the jungle it came with more amenities then you would ever expect. Peter hiked out with meals for us many times and we got so used to it we said we could have stayed another few nights up there. We were never board. It was simply spectacular.
Climbing up is pretty tough, but for us that was one of the most fun parts. Totally worth it. Highly highly recommend this place. Peter also took us on a hike around his property and we saw a lot of amazing things there. He was fantastic as a host.
I'm from Slovakia and l fall in love with the nature of this area where I design and build this suspended treehouse. I would like to make you feel in contact with the nature, animals, insects, birds, smells, colors, sounds, the jungle has so much to offer to our senses...
I live with my lovely wife Isabel and our sweet son Leon in this paradise which it is our home.
