The Space

There is no elevator in turn is a beautiful view and a surprisingly calm. (Traditionally found rarely lifts in the Copenhagen property). The area is very lively, due to the canals, art schools, Freetown "Chrsitiania" a rich supply of restuarants, everything from the cheapest to Noma.

Currently it is my adult daughter Emma who lives in the apartment when I even working out of town. We are very relaxed and want to guide our guests as well as possible, we do not have any specific social demands of our gæster. And we try as best as possible to label what each guest or guests need during the time they live with us.. We have a big, cosy and very charming apartment in a typically old copenhagen style.

The apartment is situated on the 5th floor, with a very nice view over Christiania and lots of light. The room we are renting out is big and colorful, and has a big double bed. The bathroom is in the same end as the private room and just next to entrance door, so it's very convenient. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer in the bathroom that you are welcome to use.

The apartment is a few walking steps from the main entrance to Christiania, and a 5 minute walk to Christianshavn Metro Station. If you want to go to the center of the city it's only 1 metro stop away, or a very nice 10-15 minute walk through the cosy area of Christianshavn and over the bridge (Knippelsbro) with a beautiful view of the canals.

The Neighborhood

Christianshavn is densely populated part of Copenhagen. A special atmosphere that makes me happy. There are ample of opportunities to see, eat, go short or long walks along the canal, in addition to Holmen. And a ten minute subway ride will bring you out to Amager beach. A walk in the harbor bath at Islands Brygge. It is possible to see Copenhagen from ports ago by renting a kayak or rowboat or an ordinary ride on the harbor bus. The large museum which Glyptotek, the National Museum, the State Museum of Art is definitely worth a visit. My husband Peter's ancestors came to Copenhagen from Italy and has laid the many mosaic floors in one of Copenhagen's City Hall and Glytoteket. My own grandfather was a painter and his paintings can be found at the National Gallery of Art.

Other Things to Note

The apartment is on the fifth floor and there is no lift . Which is characteristic of many buildings in Copenhagen . The property has been a classic working class housing right up to the eighties, when the small two bedroom apartments merged .. They worked typically on the big ship yard out on Refthaleøen , Burmeister & Wain . As my street incidentally that name. In very ancient times, Chritianshavn used as one of : nearby orphanages were a breeding home for orphans in Christianshavn Torv in Christianshavn , founded by Christian IV in 1605th In time, the home also used as a penal institution for adults, known as Woman Arrested in Christianshavn.

Homeless children were brought here and were trained in a specific craft . Half of all children in care died of disease , while 20 % of them fled . Very few left home for work in the rest of society . Institution produced fabrics for military uniforms, and it is debatable whether there really was no forced labor for the king .

A brand new monumental building in Baroque style plant was built 1739-41 by Philip de Lange. From 1742 Institution extended with a rasphus where some of the hardest male criminals from all over the country was put to hard labor . The prisoners buffed color of farvetræ for use in paints, unhealthy and dirty jobs.

The author and samfundsrevseren Niels Ditlev Riegels visited the place in 1787 and described the filthy conditions in his anonymously released magazine Monthly Review Kiøbenhavns Skilderie , he also put forward a plan to reform the economy of the place , but was not taken up by the administration.

In 1790 the institution changed its name to discipline , Rasp and Improvement The Al Franken and had more the character of a real prison. Guldhorn thief Niels Heidenreich was inserted here . In 1817 took a violent prisoner rebellion .

From 1870, the building of Christianshavn Penitentiary , better known as the women's prison in Christianshavn. A new prison building in the future Romanesque style, was built 1861-64 after drawings by NS Nebelong . One of the finest Danish poet Halfdan Rasmussen was born and raised here on Christianshavn.Så from being a true rhubarb district , it has become more and more fashionable and expensive to stay here . But quite nicely never will ..
