Hanging over the valley perched on top a hill looking out over Lake Victoria, the world's second-largest lake, bathed in the summer sun and one of Kampala's best neighborhoods - The Base, a 2 bed, 3 bath apartment, with a study, wireless internet, hot water, and private security, is the ultimate getaway in Kampala.
All rooms come with free laundry, and stocked refrigerator to start.
A master bedroom, with a 6x6 foot bed and a second bedroom with a 5x6 foot bed is available.
The sofa in the living room can also sleep someone comfortably.
Belonging to a longtime foreign journalist in east Africa, the apartment is decorated with memorabilia from east Africa.
The guest bedroom, or Trophy Room, with the 5X6 bed, comes along with a private desk, its own set of wireless speakers, a fan, view of the sunset, and mementos from news-moments over the last five years.
Both bedrooms have private bathrooms with hot water and bath and shower.
The third bathroom near the living room also has hot water and a shower.
The living room, styled in Swahili fashion of the Kenyan coast, includes a Jambo Sofa, larger than a single bed; a stereo system, Apple TVs (which can connect to your iphone or ipod), connected to the stereo and an HD-projector; a Hookah pipe, wireless printer, Congolese coffee table, a small desk by the balcony, and equatorial flora.
Along the walls is a library of more than 100 novels and non-fiction books, including about Africa and east Africa.
The kitchen, stocked with a refrigerator for food and refrigerator for drinks is attached to the living room.
Next door is a bedroom-turned-study, with a 27-inch flat-screen monitor, and seven-foot desk, overlooking the view of Lake Victoria. Photographs from regional photo-journalists are displayed on the walls.
There is a basketball hoop outside and downstairs.
Interaction with guests
I may or may not be around, but our helpfull staff and colleagues will alway be here to welcome you.
The house comes with a full guide including menus & phone numbers for take & delivery; and contacts for transport throughout the neighborhood.
Other things to note
House service - laundry and cleaning - comes twice weekly, for free -- and can also prepare food on order.
Food delivery from a number of restaraunts in Kampala can be arranged to Robinson Crusoe - The Base.
Our dog - Underdog - lives downstairs outside the apartment building, but on the building premises. We brought her up, and she guards the families' and our lay of land. She is friendly, but energetic. Docile during the day, dogmatic after dusk.
Robinson Crusoe is located in a private complex, and other families and residents live too, so just be respectful in terms of too too-loud parties, etc.
Nevertheless we are the longest-tenured tenants in the building, and please feel at home. We all tenants know and like each other.
