The Space

The quiet gem for the ultimate break in Amsterdam

Planning a tourist trip, or a break in Amsterdam, to visit all the sites, the theatres, a show, the museums or indeed to go on a shopping spree?

Why not stay in the middle of a Unesco World Heritage site, with all main tourist attractions and special shops at walking distance.

While still being able to sleep in a quiet environment?

Rent our city center studio: “The Library”, a hidden gem on one of Amsterdam’s canals in the most prestigious part of the famous Canal area (Grachtengordel).

Your hosts are an international couple. We speak Dutch, English and German and even some rusty French.

Treat your loved one to a royal weekend break for € 100 a night (excluding breakfast) in Europe's most exciting city, enjoy all the attractions and discover its secrets.

The apartment is located in a prestigious 17th century building in the center of the Canal Area and is at walking distance from all the main Amsterdam points of interest. A number of public parking garages are located close by.

Guest Access

The spacious studio (approx. 20 sq m) with its own private entrance has an en-suite shower room and toilet and gives access to an outside courtyard offering a view on the Achterhuis. And yes you are allowed to smoke there ;-).

We have arranged for a small pantry outside "The Library", so you can make your own coffee and tea (for free). In case you prefer bottled water, soft-drinks, beer or wine you have access to a small fridge to cool them. A washer/dryer combination is at your disposal, located in the utility room next to the studio. Breakfast to your liking is available on request (at €7.50 per person).

The room is equipped with all the ‘necessary’ mod cons: Wifi Internet, cable television and access to a fine collection of books (it’s not called “The Library” for nothing ;-).

Interaction with Guests

First and foremost we honor people’s privacy. On arrival we will invite you to a welcome drink and a small “get to know each other” chat (we are “people’s people”). We then will explain how everything works. After that we tend to leave you on your own. We believe that “The Library” and indeed our beloved city are now yours. Needless to say we are always available for questions, directions, tips or a little chat about your latest adventures in Amsterdam.

The Neighborhood

“The Library” is located in the center of the Canal Area and is AT WALKING DISTANCE from all the main Amsterdam points of interest, for example:

Getting around

“The Library” is a 25-minute walk away from Amsterdam Central Station, which will take you past some famous landmarks (The Royal Palace and the Rembrandt Square). Alternatively you can travel by subway (metro): 13 minutes or tram: 16 minutes. From the library you can walk to any interesting Amsterdam landmark, but the city also has a sophisticated public transport system: subway, trams and buses, who generally run on schedule. The closest tram stop is at a 1-minute walk, the closest metro station (Waterloo Square) is a 9-minute walk.

Other Things to Note

Please feel free to ask for plates and/or cutlery, umbrellas or other things you miss. There is an additional plaid and duvet in the laundry room. If you put used glasses, cups etc. on the stairs, we will replace them by clean ones. There is a drying rack in the laundry room. You can use it there or in your room. Feel free to ask if you want to use the dryer/washing machine. It is a complicated machine!

Do read our HOUSE MANUAL, to guarantee an optimum experience! ;-)

Your hosts have been living in Amsterdam for a long time, and we know about all the special “secret” places and shops. We have created an extensive personal guide of these locations with information why we think it would be worthwhile to visit these places as well as a map showing you how to get there. This guide is available on the table in “The Library” so you can plan your daily adventures. Next to that you will find some discount coupons for main attractions as well as a map of the city.

Also, we keep track of all the events in the city (including the dates and the location); you can see them at the end of the photo session, and we regularly update them. Do contact us for a special long stay rate.

  • We went to the Library for a three night birthday trip. Sander and his partner were very friendly and couldn't have given us a warmer welcome!!
Although we had visited Amsterdam before, they gave (email hidden) to the sights and made us feel at home.
Although there are no cooking facilities, the apartment is exactly as listed and has a lovely patio.
Location is perfect!!!! Bars, restaurants and coffee shops all within walking distance of 5-10 minutes.
We would absolutely recommend staying at the Library- lovely place and lovely hosts.

  • What a wonderful stay we had with Sander and Marijke! They were very welcoming upon our arrival, inviting us into their main home to tell us about Amsterdam. As this was our first visit to Amsterdam it was extremely helpful to have them give us tips for dinner/lunch, show us which canal tour to take, recommend museums, etc. Sander even helped us plan our departure by printing train/tram information for us and providing an early morning wake up call if needed.

The room was perfect for our needs. The private entrance made us feel like we weren't disturbing them with our coming and going. The mini fridge, coffee maker, tea were nice touches during our stay.

The location was unbelievable! Their street is very centrally located to the tram, numerous shops and restaurants. Since the room is on the back of the house it was very quiet for sleeping at night with the windows open. We would definitely stay there again if we return!

  • Sander was responsive and easy to communicate with. We arrived in Amsterdam quite late due to a flight delay and we were glad that Sander and Marijke were very welcoming. They offered us some drinks as well as gave us a short introduction to Amsterdam and some inside information and tips to travelling around. The location was great, the apartment is on a nice quiet street and short walk to main attractions and tram stop was just 2-3 mins away. The apartment was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Sander is very helpful yet he respects our privacy. He was very kind to give us written instructions on a shorter way of getting to the airport. We would highly recommend this place to our friends or anyone visiting Amsterdam.

  • We had stayed at Sander’s and had a great time. The room is confortable, has a private bathroom, private entrance, is very quiet. It’s very easy to reach by metro or tram. There’s a Market near and it’s very close to Rembrandt Plein – we could see people at the bars watching the World Cup games. If you want, you can visit almost everything by walking. And if you, Sander and his wife have a little time together, you will have a great talking and many tips to visit Amsterdam.

  • It was a really nice place with a really good location, next to rembrandt place.
The owners were very nice, friendly and available.

  • Both Sander and his wife welcomed us (couple), and were kind, thoughtful hosts. The location was ideal -- less than a block off a great tram spot, great neighborhood and walking distance to everything central. The Library was very clean, had all the basics we needed, and struck a great balance between privacy and having a local host. My wife and I felt fortunate to have stayed, and highly recommend for the location, price, and hosts.

  • Again thank you for everything Marijke and Sander for your valuable advice and disponibility. Thanks to you, we arrived at the airport with enough time to not have to run in this huge space!
We warmly recommend this place for all travelers who are interested in Amsterdam. The location is ideal, very quiet for quiet nights and restaurants nearby!

PS: cumin cheese .... What a delight!
    Hope to see you again

Hi, I was born in The Hague and have lived in Eindhoven, Utrecht, Chicago (USA), Hasselt (Belgium), Birmingham (UK) and Amsterdam. I am an industrial designer and have been working in industries like consumer electronics, games, mobile phones, and navigation for some 25 years now. I married on September 6, 1996, with the love of my live: Marijke (a corporate communication expert, but also an excellent cook). Unfortunately, we can't spend as much time together as we used to because Marijke is now running our second airbnb location, situated in Portugal: "The Library Ocean View". Do check it out, it's awesome: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3129688 We are enjoying our busy lives in the Amsterdam canal area for over 8 years now. We really love our places and are confident you will too; looking outside the front window you will see a postcard come to live. From our place you can walk to anything worthwhile seeing in Amsterdam. My personal interests lie in: •Gaming (consoles, handheld, mobile and PC) •Design (graphic design and product design) •Listening to music (80s, 90s, Classic Rock but also artists like Michael Nyman) •Reading books and comic books (graphic novels) and yes you can browse through a couple great ones if you book "The Library" •Watching movies (Sci-Fi, Horror, cartoons and Art House) •Watching Formula I racing. •My favorite hobby at the moment is: creating CD compilations of my Vinyl Album collection and designing my own covers for them. •As well as creating personalized paintings, posters, portraits and presentations
