Private entrance/walk to Stanford

House - Private room · Santa Cruz Ave, Menlo Park, CA 94025, United States

The Space

NOTE: 3-day minimum applies only to rentals within 60 days of request. Minimum stay of 1 week applies for most other periods.

With a private entrance, you can come and go as you please—more like a junior studio than a private room. Room includes a very comfortable queen-sized bed, nightstand, and desk with high-speed internet hookup (though no TV).

Full-sized private bath includes a combination tub-shower and large white-tiled counter. A microwave is on the counter, and a mini-fridge on the floor; we have an electric kettle, coffee maker, and toaster available too; let us know what you want and we'll have them waiting for you!

Access to the rest of the house is not included.

Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side). Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (other side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.

Energy-saving heating system includes your own in-room thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. Bedding includes luxury all-cotton bed linens, a down comforter, 4 regular pillows and 2 European large square pillows. And of course there's an ample supply of towels. Please bring your own alarm clock and toiletries, and a beach towel if you'll want to take towels out of the room.

Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes. There are also reasonably priced long-term bike rentals on the Stanford campus.

Our studio is walking or easy biking distance to Stanford, Palo Alto & the Sand Hill Road venture capital corridor. By car, we’re only 5 minutes from Hwy 280. You can take the train from SFO airport—not fast, but very inexpensive! BART directly from SFO to Millbrae Caltrain station (approx 15 min and $4); train to Menlo Park (under 30 minutes approx $4); and we are right down Santa Cruz Ave from the station (20-minute brisk walk or very short taxi ride). Less than 30 minutes’ drive from both San Francisco & San Jose airports, in normal traffic.

Per (website hidden) maps, the walking distance to mid-campus is 1.9 miles, 37 minutes. Walking distance to Stanford Hospital or clinics is 1.2 miles or 23 minutes. The Golf Course is even closer :)

We’re conveniently located on the main street of Menlo Park, but tucked back from the street in a private courtyard with fountain. Outdoor patio seating is not included, but we hope you’ll enjoy the hummingbirds, finches and chickadees attracted by our various bird feeders. Depending on the season, you might see birds-of-paradise, wisteria, roses, and lavender. And help yourself to the figs, persimmons, loquats and/or lemons when they are in season.

West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive (approx 3 miles) from the Stanford Dish walk, a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views; the entire loop from Alpine Road is a wonderful 5-mile walk. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.

We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for an out-of-towner wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.

We accept reservations up to 6 months in advance.

  • Beautiful courtyard, super comfy bed, private, clean quiet and extremely easy walk to Stanford. I would absolutely stay again.

  • Stayed with Laurel for a few nights. Everything was as advertised. Parking is available, room was neat and tidy. I was able to come and go as I please, sleep a good night sleep, and get on with a day in the bay area.

  • Laurel, Steve and Danny were great hosts. The facility they maintain is very clean, comfortable, provides complete privacy and is in a very nice neighborhood. Everything you need to know regarding your stay is well documented in a handout and yes you can also enjoy their nice collection of books :).

I would recommend these guys if you're looking for a nice, peaceful stay.

    Response from Laurel:

How great to hear from you! The blind repair was exactly $50. We used a new place, and they were super fast and professional. Thank you so much! Please let us know next time you will be in the area--we would love to have you as our guest again!

  • Laurel was the perfect host . All of them were very nice people to meet. The house is beautiful, very nice garden. The room was always clean and is a really quiet place if you need to rest. There is a supermarket and a bus stop that goes to Stanford very close, what makes life much more easier. Laurel was always asking me about how I was in the room, so that you could feel they were worried about guests having a nice stay in their house. I strongly recommend this place if you are visiting Menlo Park or Stanford.

  • You can't find more wonderful hosts than Laurel, Steve, and Danny. From the first time I came to see the property, I felt entirely at home. The room is very clean and comfortable, there's lots of closet space, the bathroom is well-designed, and the immediate surroundings -- a fountain, always birds at the feeders, lovely plantings -- made me feel I was living in an arboretum. You have complete privacy, but you know you can always knock on the main house door (or send a quick email) with a question. Laurel and Steve know the area extremely well and are full of excellent suggestions that help you settle into Menlo Park and Palo Alto.

    I can't wait to return!

  • These accommodations were perfect for my 3-day visit to the Stanford area. The room is comfortable and is great for one person or a young couple. The location felt very safe and private, and it's in a beautiful neighborhood. It was easy to find and very conveniently located; I was a 5 minute drive from Stanford and 5-15 minutes from major stores, gas stations, and the freeways. Laurel was a lovely host: very helpful and easy to get in touch with, although she set up the room so nicely that I never needed any additional items. She was also very accommodating with my check-in time and parking in the driveway. If you're looking for a long-term stay and need a full kitchen, this might not be the best option, but if you're looking for a nice, comfortable, private room to return to, this is an excellent choice.

  • This location was a lovely respite for me and convenient location while working at Stanford. The lovely patio fountain is particularly soothing after a long day. Everything you could need is available and Laurel is very friendly and willing to answer any and all questions.

  • Great location, quiet, nice neighborhood, private entry, will be back!

  • Laurel and Steve were really helpful on the arrival. They take care of anything you need and are happy to advice and help you finding your way around. The room is great, well sized, everything is clean and very good condition. It has anything you need for a short term (everything if you dont miss a full kitchen). I have felt really confortable the three weeks there. It was definitevely the right place to stay while looking for a permanent residence in the area.
Just a note, even you could walk to Stanford or Menlo Park downtown and the bus stops really close, I would really recommend you really to consider to get a bike or a car to move around if you rent this fabulous place.

  • Great little room and friendly hosts. We arrived at 11 p.m. and Laurel was easy going and flexible about the late arrival. The room is comfortable and quiet. A bonus in the mornings is dozens of little birds in the courtyard right outside the bedroom door flying to and from the persimmon tree and bird feeders.
