PRIVATE ENTRANCE, PRIVATE ROOM, PRIVATE BATH
With a private entrance, you can come and go as you please—more like a junior studio than a private room. Room includes a very comfortable queen-sized bed, nightstand, and desk with high-speed internet hookup (though no TV).
Full-sized private bath includes a combination tub-shower and large white-tiled counter. A microwave is on the counter, and a mini-fridge on the floor; we have an electric kettle, coffee maker, and toaster available too; let us know what you want and we'll have them waiting for you!
Access to the rest of the house is not included.
Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side). Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (other side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.
Energy-saving heating system includes your own in-room thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. Bedding includes luxury all-cotton bed linens, a down comforter, 4 regular pillows and 2 European large square pillows. And of course there's an ample supply of towels. Please bring your own alarm clock and toiletries, and a beach towel if you'll want to take towels out of the room.
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes. There are also reasonably priced long-term bike rentals on the Stanford campus.
Our studio is walking or easy biking distance to Stanford, Palo Alto & the Sand Hill Road venture capital corridor. By car, we’re only 5 minutes from Hwy 280. You can take the train from SFO airport—not fast, but very inexpensive! BART directly from SFO to Millbrae Caltrain station (approx 15 min and $4); train to Menlo Park (under 30 minutes approx $4); and we are right down Santa Cruz Ave from the station (20-minute brisk walk or very short taxi ride). Less than 30 minutes’ drive from both San Francisco & San Jose airports, in normal traffic.
WALK TO STANFORD
Per (website hidden) maps, the walking distance to mid-campus is 1.9 miles, 37 minutes. Walking distance to Stanford Hospital or clinics is 1.2 miles or 23 minutes. The Golf Course is even closer :)
We’re conveniently located on the main street of Menlo Park, but tucked back from the street in a private courtyard with fountain. Outdoor patio seating is not included, but we hope you’ll enjoy the hummingbirds, finches and chickadees attracted by our various bird feeders. Depending on the season, you might see birds-of-paradise, wisteria, roses, and lavender. And help yourself to the figs, persimmons, loquats and/or lemons when they are in season.
West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive (approx 3 miles) from the Stanford Dish walk, a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views; the entire loop from Alpine Road is a wonderful 5-mile walk. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.
We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for an out-of-towner wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.
We accept reservations up to 6 months in advance.

Laurel was the perfect host . All of them were very nice people to meet. The house is beautiful, very nice garden. The room was always clean and is a really quiet place if you need to rest. There is a supermarket and a bus stop that goes to Stanford very close, what makes life much more easier. Laurel was always asking me about how I was in the room, so that you could feel they were worried about guests having a nice stay in their house. I strongly recommend this place if you are visiting Menlo Park or Stanford.
The room is simply perfect! Very clean and the location is simply amazing: The Stanford Campus is very close and also the Sheraton Heights Supermarket is nearby. Also Laurel and her family are WONDERFUL! Very friendly and helpful: I arrived quite late and they prepared a sign to help me to find the room - amazing! The garden is lovely. I strongly recommend this room, it is really great! Whenever I come back to the Bay Area I definitely would stay there again!
My mother was in town for a family birthday celebration and Laurel and Steve's place was convenient to downtown Menlo Park and exactly as advertised. Laurel and Steve were responsive and attentive hosts and my mother had a very comfortable stay. Thanks for a great visit!
I cannot say thank you enough to Laurel for making us feel right at home. The room was perfect with everything we needed. The area was private, quiet and peaceful. Although it was very hot during our stay, the room was comfortable with great ventilation and a fan, which we only used once.
If we make another trip to the Menlo Park area I would not hesitiate to stay again. This was our first experience with Airbnb and far exceeded our expectations!
Laurel and Steve were gracious and generous hosts. They met me upon arrival, answered my questions (even when I got lost), and shared some of their lovely lemons. The room is very comfortable, and there is a calming-sounding water feature outside, though there is no kitchen (but this is clear in the room info). The only unexpected thing was that the internet could be a little slow at times for streaming video.
Overall, I highly recommend staying with Laurel during a stay in Menlo Park or Palo Alto. Thumbs up!
I stayed for 7 weeks in this so nice, quiet room. To say it in a few words, I felt at home. Laurel and her husband are the most delightful and helpful hosts. Thank you again and again.
I had a lovely time staying at Laurel's place in Menlo Park. It is in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood, and the location was perfect for my daily commute to Stanford. I rented a bike from Laurel for a very reasonable price, and it was a short pleasant ride to campus. Laurel even left flowers in my room on my birthday, which was really sweet. I highly recommend her and her family and their lovely room as a place to stay on the Peninsula.
You can't find more wonderful hosts than Laurel, Steve, and Danny. From the first time I came to see the property, I felt entirely at home. The room is very clean and comfortable, there's lots of closet space, the bathroom is well-designed, and the immediate surroundings -- a fountain, always birds at the feeders, lovely plantings -- made me feel I was living in an arboretum. You have complete privacy, but you know you can always knock on the main house door (or send a quick email) with a question. Laurel and Steve know the area extremely well and are full of excellent suggestions that help you settle into Menlo Park and Palo Alto.
I can't wait to return!
These accommodations were perfect for my 3-day visit to the Stanford area. The room is comfortable and is great for one person or a young couple. The location felt very safe and private, and it's in a beautiful neighborhood. It was easy to find and very conveniently located; I was a 5 minute drive from Stanford and 5-15 minutes from major stores, gas stations, and the freeways. Laurel was a lovely host: very helpful and easy to get in touch with, although she set up the room so nicely that I never needed any additional items. She was also very accommodating with my check-in time and parking in the driveway. If you're looking for a long-term stay and need a full kitchen, this might not be the best option, but if you're looking for a nice, comfortable, private room to return to, this is an excellent choice.
This location was a lovely respite for me and convenient location while working at Stanford. The lovely patio fountain is particularly soothing after a long day. Everything you could need is available and Laurel is very friendly and willing to answer any and all questions.
