Romantic guesthouse in the center/ the Mexico Room.
A beautiful and romantic colonial guesthouse in Cartagena de Indias, in the vibrant and traditional Getsemani area, one of the last truly exotic places in the Caribbean, the most dynamic downtown location where new luxury boutique hotels, bars and restaurants sprawl. Positioned in a quiet street, away from traffic and commercial activities, and just a few feet from the Arsenal and the booming Calle del Guerrero night spots and at walking distance from all the best restaurants. The house is a mix of colonial and mediterranean style designed by award winning architect and decorated with african elements and maps brought back by the owner in his African journeys. All rooms are customed designed and fully equipped. The cotto floors with spanish ceramic accents help you cool down and unwind surrounded by an abundant tropical vegetation with adult mango and palm trees. Guests can relax in the patios and enjoy an open air tile jacuzzi on the terrace and a mirador/solarium with view on the Cathedral, the churches of San Pedro and La Trinidad and the Castillo San Felipe. The house is on a north-south axis and enjoys plenty of natural ventilation.
Standard double room with 1 queen bed and 1 sofa or 1 queen bed and 1 twin bed. Bright room with tones ranging from white to yellows and reds. The private bathroom has a vibrant yellow open roof shower showing a piece of sky and some brave agave defying the sun. Minibar, wifi. 400 count sheets, hard and soft pillows. Mexican inspired style.
"...as part of a broader Colombian reawakening, the city is resurfacing with boutique hotels, fusion-seeking restaurants and new fashion labels that turn sleepy towns into global destinations. Tourists are descending on its galleries, strolling idly down its byways, reveling with locals at New Year’s Eve parties in public plazas. Travelers now call it Latin America’s hippest secret." The New York Times May 2, 2010
"Take a dash of faded colonial grandeur, then add a dose of sultry nightlife and an influx of cosmopolitan travelers seeking the next great Caribbean hot spot. Oliver Schwaner-Albright sets his sights on an emerging Colombian getaway that delivers all this and more." Travel + Leisure April 2008
"...recently, the Colombian port town of Cartagena has become an unlikely food destination, attracting the kind of culinary travelers who spend their vacations in Rome and Paris. And what they find is a city far more exotic, but no less adroit at catering to sophisticated palates...200-year-old Spanish colonial mansions refurbished with crisp interiors, trendy bistros that elevate plantains to haute fare, and theatrical rooms buzzing with dignitaries in starched collars and Windsor knots sipping minty rum drinks..." The New York Times October 26, 2008
"David Ebershoff visits this dreamy city by the sea, a place that wears its rich history as lightly as it does its languorous charm." Conde Nast Traveller March 2007
The property is at the up-and-coming neighborhood outside of the old wall. The houses are colorful; Bougainvillaeas here and there, and vibrant and colorful murals done by ordinary neighborhood people. The name of the owner is Marcus. Marcus is a charming man. Kind and thoughtful. Due to a last-minute toilet problem in the room we were supposed to stay, Marcus found us the neighborhood guesthouse to spend the first night. He met us at the front gate at 10 PM that night; helped us check in and explained the logistics of the next day to us. After we told him that the guesthouse was below the standard we had expected, Marcus offered to refund us the total cost of the first night of our reservation at his property which was a lot higher that that of the guesthouse. The morning of our departure flight he got up before we did and offered us coffee. And that was 4:45 AM.
We loved our stay at Cartahena because of Marcus and because of the neighborhood of Marcus's property.
Great place in the old part of Cartagena. Marcus was great and very knowledgeable. Our room was nice, but small for three people - I should have asked for more details. Overall we would stay there again!
Marcus was a welcoming and kind host. Stay here if you go to Cartagena! You won't regret it. Beautiful block, near the most charming plaza in the Getsemani neighborhood. Breakfast is excellent and cooked to order every day when you wake up, with fresh fruit and local specialties. Relaxing rooftop jacuzzi and garden is a great place to unwind. Rooms are excellent, have A/C and are clean - they also have a lot of character. Marcus knows Cartagena and the surrounding area well and has spot-on recommendations for whatever you might be considering.
Absolutely wonderful guest house and location. The neighborhood is lively and safe - as a young woman traveling alone I had no problems or concerns at all coming home after dark. Marcus and the staff are so friendly and attentive to every need. It was a wonderful place to unwind and relax and enjoy Cartagena!
Marcus is a great host and his b&b is perfect - we couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay.
Me and my boyfriend spent the weekend here so that we could explore Cartagena. Marcus was welcoming and really informative - the room even came with a print out of a map and numerous recommendations for places to go and eat.
The b&b is about a 2 min walk from all the nightlife (but isn't loud at night) and about 5-7 min walk to the main centre where all the other action is.
The room itself was great - spacious, clean and comfortable. The pictures don't do it justice. We loved the open air bathroom! And breakfast was lovely. It was particularly entertaining when we were joined by Marcus' surprisingly sprightly tortoises, who love to share your breakfast if your willing!
We had a great time here and would definitely come back and recommend to friends and family!
Marcus was an excellent host, very friendly an nice person, always there to talk and help.
The location couldn't be better, i felt safe and secure. The house is very cozy, feeling always like home. Les lezards crew make you feel like royal ;). The breakfast was more that I could ask.
Extremely helpful host, guesthouse in great location.Highly recommend!
Marcus was a great host, he picked us up from the airport and was very helpful with suggestions for restaurants and shopping. After our stay at his place, Marcus even allowed us (in fact, he offered us) to leave there one of our suitcases while we spent a couple of days at an island resort, even if we weren't coming back to his guesthouse. The house is charming with open but shady courtyard, rooftop Jacuzzi and sun deck. The rooms are simply furnished but very comfortable with AC, bathroom and cable TV. The breakfast was really nice and the staff very accommodating. Located in Getsemani it's about a 10 minute walk to the old city but there are also shops and restaurants nearby. I would suggest taking the back way to the old city as the main road is very busy and noisy. Two tortoises and a rather shy feline also add to the ambiance of this very pleasant and affordable guesthouse. Highly recommended!
We had a great stay at Les Lezards! The B&B has a charming indoor/outdoor design, and is located in a great, lively neighborhood. One of the highlights was a delicious breakfast made to order each morning that consisted of eggs, toast, cereal, fresh fruit, and delicious fruit juice. The friendly staff, excellent shower, solid a/c, and lovely hot tub all added to a pleasant stay in Cartagena. Definitely recommended!
