The space

Apartment is on the second floor of a vintage building that is located in the Uptown Neighborhood (4800 North, off of Lake Shore Drive).Unusually large apartment - plenty of private places to hang, read, relax. Private room with twin bed is bright and overlooks the front porch. The addition of a 48" desk and a mirrored vanity in December 2013 has created a bedroom with plenty of storage space for belongings big and small as well as a comfortable place to study or work. The room has its own air conditioner unit, space heater and humidifier. High-speed wireless. Share the bathroom with the owner (I promise to keep it clean). Share apartment with Scout the dog.( He has become the highlight of the stay for some of the guests and contributes to the homey feel of the stay with his excited welcomes and funny antics.)

Plenty of sheets, towels, blankets, pillows.

Guest access

Guests have full access to the kitchen (and everything in it), dining room, bathroom and living room plus front and back porch. Also, the laundry facilities are in the basement and access to the laundry room is also included. My bedroom and office are off-limits.

Interaction with guests

I will be present throughout the guest's stay in 99% of the cases. I have been known to go away for a day or two but it is not on a regular basis. My interaction with guests vary depending on the guest. I've gone sightseeing, out to dinner, on car rides, grocery shopping with some and others, we are like ships passing in the night. It is based on how long the guest is staying, reason for the stay and interests. I am always available and very willing to assist in any way I can.

Other things to note

I've hosted guests from 2 nights to 6 months.

I stayed with Gail at her lovely apartment for 4 weeks. I am a student and needed a place to stay for a short time in Chicago. I would say that her apartment is student friendly. Gail will leave you alone if that's what you need. She was very accommodating and respectful. She has an adorable dog, Scout, who only occasionally barks (as expected), but not during the night, which is great. I made full use of her kitchen because I prefer to make my own meals, and it had everything I needed. I can confirm that the other reviews given about their stay as far as the room and location is very accurate. Overall a positive experience, I highly recommend staying here!

I stayed with Gail for three weeks as I was transitioning between jobs and moving out of Chicago. She is an excellent, experienced and hospitable host, as you can see from her other glowing reviews. Her second-floor apartment (fyi, no elevator in the building) was very comfortable, spacious, and well-furnished with ample storage space. The location is on a quiet street in the diverse Uptown neighborhood and within easy walking distance to stores (Walgreens, Target and Aldi), public transportation and a variety of local ethnic restaurants. Her dog, Scout, is such a sweetheart and will always brighten your day. Gail's place is also perfect for long-term and month-to-month stays, which can be a rare find. I also highly recommend Gail because she was still a great host despite falling sick with pneumonia during a large part of my stay. I became sick too and she was also very accommodating. She even offered to give me a ride downtown once so that I wouldn't have to take the train at night. Thank you, Gail, for welcoming me into your home!

Response from Gail:

Loved Gail's place. Gail ~ even though traveling at the time ~ touched base to make sure I arrived and gained access without issue. Gail is a warm individual and her dog Scout is a real sweetie!

Check-in was very smooth. We didn't interact much during my stay, but she seemed nice enough. My only complaint is that her VERY LOUD alarm went off at 7am one day for over 30 minutes. I finally had to wake her up and ask her to turn it off. Scout the dog was very calm and well-mannered.

Response from Gail:
Sorry about the alarm. I slept right through it which is not my norm.

I am an easy going, flexible host.I want my guests to feel comfortable to ask for my help when needed and to feel at home. I let my guests do their own thing unless they need my assistance. I work at a non-profit as the Manager of Volunteer Relations. I've traveled all over the world and love the idea of hosting other travelers. My travel experiences range from staying in First Class hotels to BB's or homestays. I've lived in the same apartment for over 20 years and feel comfortable in helping visitors with things to do in Chicago.
