Comfortable double room in friendly No Smoking household. Quiet at night, good for stargazing & wildlife.
Good connections to Cambridge, London & Stansted.
Before you read on please note we are totally No Smoking including the garden & surrounding area.
This is not a smart or pristine house but it is comfortable, clean & interesting! We're located just outside leafy Little Shelford, a very pretty village 5 miles south of central Cambridge. Cambridge - where you can find 800 year old colleges, the Cam river & interesting pubs in every direction.
We're a 20 minute cycle ride from Addenbrookes Hospital and a 10 minute cycle ride from Shelford station which is on the London Liverpool Street line. It's also possible to get to Stansted by train from Shelford.
We're a friendly, slightly bohemian family. 2 shy cats. We usually cycle for transport (not sport) and can tell you about bike shops, bike repairs, bike hire and many cycle routes! Multi-cultural circle of friends.
The cottage is in a very quiet location in the countryside, off the main road, so is very peaceful at night. Also, no light pollution so you can see the stars very well on clear nights.
Breakfast is fresh coffee, bread, cheese, fruit etc for breakfast. I can provide supper for £12 but please let me know in advance if you want this. Can cater for vegetarians/vegans or those with dietary restrictions e.g. lactose free, gluten free etc.
Help yourself to hot drinks any time.
Share the family bathroom, garden and dining room.
Off-road parking and safe, under cover storage space for bikes. Great bird life including garden birds such as wrens and robins as well as both kinds of woodpeckers, a pair of buzzards, mistle thrushes etc. You can also hear wild geese flying over at certain times of year!
The upstairs room has a new double bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers with mirror, a large table and chair, a bookcase.
We have a good local knowledge of Cambridge & the surrounding area. We will be glad to give you ideas for sightseeing and where to find information about events in town.
Se habla Espanol and conversational French.
We have NO public transport within half a mile so a bike or car is a necessity unless you like walking and have plenty of time! You can take bikes on the train on this line.
In Little Shelford, there is a limited bus service between Cambridge & Saffron Walden. In Shelford itself, there are other more regular bus services & also a train station which is on the London Liverpool St line - it's about an hour into London and 5 minutes into Cambridge. We are 2 miles from Shelford station and 3 miles from Whittlesford station, a half hour drive from Stansted Airport, 3 miles from M11 (Junction 10) and Duxford Imperial War Museum.
Please note taxis in this area are very expensive e.g. from Cambridge or Shelford train station to the house will cost you approx £20. When convenient & by prior arrangement only, on guests' arrival and when leaving I'm prepared to pick people up from, or give lifts, to either Shelford or Whittlesford Station for £5 per journey.
Garden, parking space, wi-fi internet.
Washing machine on request.
Interaction with Guests
At mealtimes (but not always breakfast).
I'm happy to cook an evening meal for guests but this is an additional charge on top of the cost of the room & would appreciate at least a day's notice.
We have the best of both worlds. We live in the countryside but are a half hour cycle ride from the centre of Cambridge and a 40 minute drive/train ride from Stansted Airport.
The nearest public transport is a mile away so you need your own transport (plenty of space for free off-road parking) & somewhere dry to store your bike at night.
Other Things to Note
You have access to free wi-fi internet access (but not the computer).
You're welcome to make yourself hot drinks.
You're welcome to use the garden (& bbq).
Absolutely No Smoking anywhere including the garden. If you smoke, this is not the place for you.
Please respect this is a family home & not a full-time B&B:- let us know at least 3 days in advance what time you will be arriving. Guests are respectfully requested to vacate the premises between 10am & 5pm including weekends.
Please leave the bathroom clean & tidy as you would like to find it.
Please don't run a bath without consulting us first - it will use all the hot water in the tank!
Don't play music, TV, film or radio loudly after 10pm (small house)
I have just spent a really lovely two days at Sally's home whilst attending the Cereals Event locally. Sally made me so welcome, the house and location are lovely; and Sally's evening meal sat in the garden in the setting sun's shine was just great. The meal included leaves from the garden, beautifully cooked fish and the most amazing salads. Thanks very much to Sally for making a work trip so pleasant.
I had a successful and plesant stay with Sally for nearly a month. The house is clean and well kept and the double bedroom was spacious. The location is nice and rural, so you will ideally need a car or bike to get around. Sally sometimes had time to cook an evening meal which were all delicious and healthy.
The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.
I stayed with Sally for four weeks in August 2012 and I highly recommend her family countryside cottage. The breakfast was great and the room was comfortable. I worked in the library in Cambridge and enjoyed cycling the short distance to Shelford at the end of my workday. In the evenings I enjoyed the fine dinners Sally prepared (optional) and excellent conversations. This was my first trip to the UK and staying with Sally helped to make it a success.
Sally is a delightful person who just happens to live in a delightful house and location. Perfect!!
Sally was more than accommodating. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with coffee being served with hot milk. I was rather nervous staying alone but Sally and the lovely country setting made me feel very comfortable.
Wonderful situation, comfy bed, lovely food, good company and stimulating conversation. Homes stays don't get any better than this.
