One good advice: don't go here.
Although we knew Avinder has 16 dogs, we thought it would be ok, because of the positive reviews. We could not imagine what we would find.
Two of the 16 dogs she is keeping at the moment are almost completely paralysed and are lying on the floor in their own dirt - because they are incontinent. Some of the other dogs didn't get proper toilet training - when we left, a fresh pile of dog shit was lying at the base of the staircase. The result is a unbearable (urine)smell that fills the entire house - this is not just 'dogsmell'. Avinder told us she had no cleaning maid at the moment, so the house was a bit of a mess - quite an understatement if you ask us. Our room and the bathroom were not properly cleaned as well and there were stains on the sheets.
During our first night, we decided we could not stay here. Because it was a sunday, Avinder was still sleeping and we had many things to do that day, we left early in the morning leaving a note to apologize and explain why we had left. We also asked Avinder to meet later that day in Kuching or to keep contact by mail or airbnb to come to an agreement on at least a partial refund for the nights we did not spend at her place and were already payed for. We never heard anything from her and she simply ignored our follow-up email, airbnb message and official airbnb refund request.
We are both vegetarian, care about animals and love dogs, and it's nice that Avinder takes care of abandoned dogs - although the paralysed dogs should simply be put asleep for their own good -, but the way things are now, it seems very hard to combine this with being an airbnb host.
Arvinder a.ka. Vinnie is a cheerful and openminded woman. She is friendly and easygoing. The first evening I arrived she invited me already to join them for a party. I spent a few nights with her and her friends in the local bars. That was very nice. During the day time I went my own way. Unfortunately they had no maid at the time I stayed with them. So the house was not very clean. It is a dog lovers paradise. I really enjoyed playing and cuddling with them. Vinnie took me to very good local restaurants and we had a good time. She also took care of my transport from and to the airport for free. If you want to meet local people and looking for a nice host just book now ;-)
My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights in June 2013. We had a great time and wish we had stayed for longer. Arvinder's (Vinnie) hospitality is second to none. She picked us up from the airport, showed us around town, took us to see the Orangutans at Semengohh, gave us food/restaurant recommendations, showed us the nightlife of Kuching and delivered us back to the airport. All of course free of charge.
The accommodation was comfortable, clean, secure and spacious. Breakfast was included each day. Our laundry was washed for us free of charge. Vinnie's family is very friendly and everyone speaks English.
If you are not an animal person then this place may not be for you. As advertised, Vinnie has many cats and dogs. Whilst all her animals are vaccinated and are very friendly (including some puppies!) you may want to reconsider if animals aren't your thing.
I stayed for a week at “Cosy and Comfortable Spare Room” with Aravinder, her mum and her cousin. She was at the airport to receive, and at the end of my stay to drop me off at the airport. She and her mum are animal lovers, caring for rescued animals. They look after 10dogs, 5puppies, 4cats, and 3 turtles.
Even though she had her own busy schedule, she found time to take me places like Orang outan sanctuary, the natives’ cultural centre and village, and to the town. When she did not find time, she arranged for me to go with her cousin Peter. I enjoyed the visit to their native village, to which her cousin and her mum took me, and where they were born and grew up. I found the family to be very friendly, helpful, and obliging. I felt myself being a part of the family.
Being a vegan, she arranged for me to have vegan meals at her place, preparing meals to my liking.
The room was spacious, and had a queen bed, a writing desk and a small dressing mirror. There were no shelves to place my clothes, and they remained in my bag.
As an animal lover myself I quite enjoyed my stay at her place. However, for those who are allergic and cannot bear animal smell I would not recommend this place.
We had a wonderful time in Kuching with our gracious host Arvinder.
She went above and beyond to welcome us, made sure we had a pleasant stay, showed us around and gave us good tips. She took us to a a few little gems of local places that were highlights of our stay.
Like her description says, there are indeed quite a few dogs in the house!
But they stay on the street level floor only and the room is upstairs.
I always travel with earplugs anyway and slept very well.
The room was spacious and comfortable with its own all-important good AC. We can recommend anyone to stay there without hesitation, a great deal with a wonderful host.
I had an excellent 7-night stay at Arvinder's home. The room was very spacious with a good bed, a large balcony and a great desk for my laptop to put on. The room came with its own bathroom and a hearty breakfast in the morning.
Arvinder's house is not directly in the center but at times she or her cousin drove me to where I had to get to or I walked. There is also a bus stop nearby, as well as a 24h Seven-Eleven and an IT-shopping mall with a number of restaurants and eateries.
Highly recommended if you want to explore Kuching for a few days and prefer to stay in a private home instead of a hotel.
You seriously will not find a better host than Arvinder. I had the pleasure of staying with her and her family for a week in Kuching, and was made so comfortable during my stay it was hard to leave. Between her mom's home cooking, her cousin's jokes, and Arvinder's easygoing personality, I felt right at home.
I had everything I needed here, plus a lot of extras. Yummy breakfasts are included in the room, and Arvinder and I would often eat lunch and dinner or go out to drinks together too. The place has laundry, which is an added bonus for the traveler. Arvinder was a great tour-guide and buddy when I wanted to hang out, but gave me all the space I needed when I had to work.
The place is especially suited for pet lovers—4 cats, a few turtles, and 20 dogs!—with a private and a super clean room with balcony. I had a terrific stay here and recommend it highly!
Super value for the price! Vinnie was a great host. She picked me up at the airport, and later she and her brother shuttled me to various places. What a great extra. You are welcomed immediately into the family home; dogs, cats, turtles, mom, and all!. The room was cozy and comfortable. Travelers to Asia looking for 5-star creature comforts should book the Hilton. If you wish to live with a local family, in their humble home, receive superior hospitality, and can live without a hot shower ( :) ) then you'll be fine. Those of you not fond of dogs, try elsewhere (there are many dogs in the house). An amazing surprise was the arrival of a full breakfast, on a tray served to me in my room! I got to sample a wide array of Malaysian dishes along with a great cup of coffee and fresh juices with fruits on the side over my 4 day stay. The location was a bit inconvenient to the town center, but not impossible. Taxi's and infrequent buses were available. Overall, a really good experience for me, while I attended the Rainforest World Music Festival outside of town.
