Fancy staying in a romantic Castle on an Island?
Then read on....
Nestling on a small island on Lough Derg, River Shannon, close to the shoreline in Scariff Bay, is a 16th century Towerhouse, or Castle, known as Castlebawn. Built by the McNamaras, about 1540, blown-up in 1827 by canon, now restored and opened as a B&B.
Alas, Castlebawn's claim to fame was the way in which it was destroyed by the authorities in 1827 when the south wall was blown up - as the building was used to manufacture poteen! Castlebawn was in a sorry state of repair when first purchased in 1995. It consisted of three walls in poor condition, roofless, covered in ivy and resembling a medieval handball alley! The castle was rebuilt using the original stone lying close to the Towerhouse. Several pieces of stone windows were found along with a corbel with a head carved on it, which were all reused in the reconstruction. Irish Oak was used to replace the wooden floor beams and also for the new roof trusses.

If it's history, scenery, privacy, romancing, honeymoon, birdwatching or fishing you are looking for, then Castlebawn is ideal!
Even though Castlebawn was built in the C16, we have hot showers, electric blankets and views!

Our experience at Castlebawn was truly, truly magical. It's hard to describe how unique a stay here is, but from the boat trip to the island, to the warm greeting and history from out host, to the warm fire and comfy accommodations, the experience was stellar. Six stars out of five.

Pat's castle is not just a place to sleep at night. It's an amazing experience in and of itself. The castle is located on an island in a lake, which means you need a boat to get there. This may seem like a hassle, but in reality it adds to the experience. My partner and I rented a boat from the Derg Isle Team Building Centre, which is about 10 minutes (by boat) away. This an incredibly simple and easy process. I e-mailed them, they said to bring cash, they gave me 5 minutes of training, and then we were on our way. There's nothing quite like skimming across the lake watching the castle grow larger in the distance. Pat greeted us with a smile when we arrived at the dock on his island, helped us haul our gear inside, and gave us a top-to-bottom tour of the castle. He described the 10 year (!) process of rebuilding the ruins of the castle, showed of pictures of the entire process, described the history of the castle and its owners, and recounted the interesting story of how it was destroyed in the first place (I won't ruin it for you - it involved bandits and cannons). The pictures simply don't do the place justice. The setting is incredible, with views of the lake and hills all around. The restoration of the castle is amazing, with thoughtful details and historical artifacts throughout. It has won several awards and commendations. There are places to eat inside and outside (including a nice shady spot my partner enjoyed some cheese and wine in) and swimming hole (the weather was a bit too cool for me to try it out!). The master bedroom is at the top of the castle overlooking the lake. It's large, comfortable, and charming. The kitchen is fully equipped. There's hot water, indoor plumbing, and electricity (all built in during the restoration!). In the morning Pat cooked us and incredible breakfast with fruit, eggs, bacon, toast, coffee (some of the best I had during my entire trip in Ireland), and yogurt. He then helped us load our boat and we headed out. In short, you're absolutely missing out if you don't stay here. My visit here was one of the highlights of my entire trip to Ireland.

A unique and wonderful experience. We especially enjoyed playing medieval games. Make sure to allow for a couple of hours to visit Holy Island before you check in or after you check out.

Castle Bawn was the highlight of our trip! Admittedly we were concerned about having to rent the boat to get there. It was worth every penny! And really easy. Don't let it deter you. What an adventure. Pat made us feel right at home making sure we were taken care of every step of the way. Not only did we learn medieval board games and archery. We enjoyed staying up late and chatting while drinking wine ! Don't hesitate or you will miss this gem.
