Interaction with Guests
Besides getting the keys for move-in and check-out I suppose interaction would be "only as needed"... unless you come hangout with me and my friends in my restaurant (The Living Room)... or my bar (Hakka Bar)... or on the weekends at my club! (.TAG)
The building with our apartments is located in the Zongbei neighborhood which enjoys easy access to basically all facets of Chengdu. Sichuan University, the best school in Sichuan, is right next door so there is no shortage of restaurants, bars, shops, banks and eateries of all kinds. The neighborhood also includes one of the best nightlife areas of Chengdu as well as easy access to the line 1 north-south subway which is right next to the US consulate.
It's about 10-12 minutes walk to the line 1 north-south subway line. Many bus routes stop right outside the building. Taxis are also easily found all around the building.

Ellen was great. My flight to Chengdu was delayed until 1AM and I did not get to check in until 1:30AM but Amber, Ellen's assistant, was extremely accommodating and she is a great asset to Ellen's team. I didn't get to interact with Ellen in person but she was very professional during the reservation process. While the room listed was booked, she had another room similar to the one listed so don't hesitate to reach out if there looks to be limited availability. The room is basic but had a queen sized bed, a sofa (that pulled out to be a very basic bed), air conditioning, a kitchen, bathroom and TV. The bathroom has a standing shower with no separation from the rest of the bathroom - this is a typical set up from what I understand. There were some stains on the walls but the bed was clean and I really didn't spend too much time in the room other than for sleeping. My only complaint has nothing to do with Ellen or her assistant Amber. There was a fking bug that bit the hell out of me the first and second night. I managed to kill it on the second night but I had a few bumps all over my body. No more bites after that.
The room is alright and the price is fair. However the experience could be better if the equipment is fresher and if there's a TV.
Hi Flora! We are sorry you feel this way about the apartment, especially in light of the fact that we gave you a free upgrade to a 1 bedroom + living room apartment instead of the studio you booked. Our listing does not show that we offer cable TV, so in the future please read Airbnb descriptions carefully in order to avoid unfairly negatively impacting dedicated Airbnb hosts' ratings.
I had an excellent stay at Hakka homes. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. The water in the shower was hot and endless. Yay! Ellen and her assistant Amber were constantly available to help out with check-in, a short orientation of the apartment and surroundings, and made check-out easy too.
A hot water kettle, hair dryer, and a washing machine were available in the room too. Thanks!
Another thing, the location is very nice. A few blocks away from the subway station. A couple of nightclubs including Jellyfish, and several tasty places to eat are just across the street. There are also several convenience stores just downstairs.
While this is not a homestay experience, it beats out any hotel for convenience and overall value.
The apartment is placed in a convenient location, with plenty different bus routes just across the road. Subway station is within 15 minutes walk. There are a lot of restaurants and bars within the area, suitable for people looking for a night life.
Room and Facility:
The actual room wasn't as pictured as in airbnb. It is a basic hotel-like room, in addition with a kitchenette and a balcony. The room itself was a bit old, but still tidy and clean enough. The bed was fine with bed sheets and pillows. Water supply for shower was strong yet the temperature wasn't very stable. The kitchenette was very basic, and cooking utensils is not comprehensive at all. If you insist to cook, do communicate with Ellen beforehand to see what she could provide. The great thing was that there was a balcony for little sunshine and wifi was generally quick.
Ellen has been nice with quick response often within a day, unfortunately I wasn't be able to greet her in person. I ended up communicating with her assistant, which I wasn't very pleased with. I struggled to find her a few times both checking in and out, she didn't seem to be very responsible.
This studio was basic with most of what you need for a short stay. Don't expect it's a home away then you won't be disappointed.
Hi Hattie! Thank you for your constructive feedback! Actually you are right about the apartment and my assistant. She made a mistake and put you into the wrong studio, not the one pictured on Airbnb! We have more than one studio, but we clearly had you booked into the Airbnb studio on our registry. We really can't understand why she did that, and when I return to Chengdu from my travels in the USA next week I am going to have a long talk with her! Anyways, we are always trying to improve our kitchen utensils, but there is some natural attrition there, so we apologize for that! Overall I'm glad you enjoyed the location, we will certainly try to improve upon your critiques!
It wasn't what we were expecting talking about cost-quality relation.
First of all, the two most important places for me in an apartment, the bathroom and the kitchen, were not clean. The kitchen smelled really bad, like humid. Also it did not had enough utensils, only one little spoon, no knife and no cutlery.
The apartment is well located, downtown is a 15 minutes ride by bus.
Never got to meet the host only spoke to her briefly on the phone. Just remember to bring your own towel(s) as they are not provided. Had a one burner stove , microwave, fridge with a small freezer and a washer. Don't forget to bring your own soap and toilet paper as that is not provided. The owner speaks English and her assistant speaks limited English but has a translator if needed. A large market is open from 9-21 and there are restaurants nearby and a tex-Mex restaurant and mc Donald's . Good location. Many busses nearby both in front and the side street. American consulate not far. If you have a preference for any spices bring your own as I did not see any. Bedroom is roomy. No shower curtain which houses the toilet and sink and gets slippery when wet so bring a pair of shoes you don't mind if they get wet. Washer is on the small balcony which helps on the space but only cold water is available.if you don't know Chinese or have a friend that does getting around can be tough. Hooters is across the street but did not go there. Limited space to hang up wet items to dry so bring a couple of hangers . Would I go again yes but a little more prepared.

About the Host, Ellen
Hi! I’m Ellen, or Zhang Xuan (张绚) in Chinese, welcome to Chengdu! I am born and bred in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan and home to China’s tastiest and of course spiciest cuisine! I’m also a member of the Hakka people, who, strangely are not recognized by the Chinese government as one of the official 56 ethnic minorities of China. Actually, the Hakka people have their own language and cuisine and lengthy history of more than 1000 years covering multiple migrations to both south China and later Sichuan.
I started housing guests in Chengdu in 2009 when a few friends and I, all living in the same building near a few popular Chengdu nightclubs, began housing DJs in our various bedrooms when they came from out of town to play Chengdu’s nightclubs including Xiongmao, Jellyfish, Paname and many more. We would just rent out our bedrooms or apartments and crash with each other. Before we knew it a little business was borne of it. I never really saw it coming. Anyways, more than 6 years later, HakkaHomes manages a bunch of apartments all in one great and uber convenient location in Chengdu.
Nowadays I am really busy managing my rooftop bar, Hakka Bar, and my restaurant, The Living Room, which serves traditional European fare. Oh, and by the way, my restaurant AND my bar are both in the same building as all of our HakkaHomes apartments. So when you stay at HakkaHomes, good food, fun parties, and lots of new friends are very closeby! We have had all kinds of guests stay in HakkaHomes apartments. From DJs and artists to entrepreneurs and engineers to students and interns. Considering how long I’ve been in this town, I’ve come to know a few people to say the least. Therefore guests should always let me know what kind of connections you are looking to make, because I may often know good people to introduce you to.
Anyways, Chengdu rocks, we’re always having fun in the neighborhood, and there is a reason they call Chengdu, “The city you can never leave”!
