Walk through the wood and bronze old gate and down a little alley and you will feel like you have entered a secret garden oasis right in the heart of Los Feliz Village. The house is said to be one of the oldest in Los Feliz, and was hand hewn by a family of pumpkin farmers back when there was little to see for miles but fields and paths. Have total privacy, a lovely garden with shaded sitting and dining areas, a stunning old house and modern sleeping barn - and yet an easy walk almost anything you could want in one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the city.
The house is stunning, and original. (The LA Times Magazine called it "a whimsical amalgam of farmhouse style and contemporary design - Old MacDonald via Milan Furniture Fair.") The rooms are not large, but all look out to the gardens and are filled with light and a graceful style. The original floors in the living and dining rooms are stained white and have very comfortable furniture. The kitchen is small, but with plenty of room to work the European appliances and grab the old china and interesting glassware. There is an office/den loft upstairs with two twin beds that join together to make a king. The two bedrooms are 10 steps away via a stenciled white deck in the Sleeping Barn. The master has a comfortable king bed with high ceilings, reclaimed large plank wood floors, and ample closets. It looks right out to the private yard and garden. The small child's room with twin loft bed is right next door, with a whimsical design and desk and play area.
While the house itself is lovely, the garden and yard truly makes it special. The fences are all 8 feet tall, for full privacy, and covered by jasmine, bamboo and bougainvillea. There are terrific grapefruit, orange, tangerine, persimmon and loquat trees, whose fruit you are welcome to, as well as a Concord grape arbor. There is a delightful dining area under the old oak tree, and an outdoor living area on a flagstone deck. Add to that the small yard, patio deck with hammock and breakfast table, outdoor bath and child's playhouse, and you can have the fully indoor/outdoor California existence.
In short, the place is a bit of private paradise, right in the middle of a vibrant, creative part of the city. Welcome Home....
As far as the neighborhood, it is truly as good as anything Los Angeles can offer. Terrific restaurants and cafes, buses and the metro, organic juice bars, a wonderful bookstore, two movie theaters, a great newstand, and all the conveniences you might need are all within an easy walk. And Griffith Park, the largest urban park in North America, with golf, tennis, concerts, hiking, cycling and jogging galore, is just minutes away.
For Los Angeles, there is more public transit than almost anywhere. You can walk to the Metro to go to Hollywood or Downtown, or take busses to almost anywhere in the city.
While the property is gorgeous, it does require a little bit of special care. I have a six year old, so it has seen its share of nicks, but please do be very careful of all the white surfaces and custom furniture. And please return the china, and toys etc, where you found them. The house is hard to find from the street - in the best way. The driveway is yours to use, as are all the fruit trees and vegetable beds. The house is over 100 years old, and not well insulated, so it can feel a bit cold in the winter and hot in the summer. If you are in residence on Wednesday nights, please move the driveway trash and recycling bins to the street for morning pickup. Please do not operate the Danish wood stove without explicit instructions from the Host, while having no drywall or plaster on any surface throughout the house is gorgeous, it does make it a bit of a tinderbox. Try to be quiet using the gardens after 11pm. But most of all... enjoy, and make yourself at home!
We loved staying in this amazing house. Every single detail was beautiful in this place!
The perfect oasis in the charming Los Feliz area.
Very child friendly as well! We spent many hours being outside in this lovely garden, a treat for the whole family.
I would happily go back & Eliot was the perfect host, helping us with everything we needed for our trip!
Really beautifully renovated old house. Totally cozy. The yard is also a great place to hang out and is private. As populated as the neighborhood is it's amazing that you can sit in the yard in total privacy.
Very nice neighborhood too. Short drive to nice hikes in Griffith park.
Eliot was helpful and in contact throughout our stay. The house is greatly located in Loz Feliz, you can walk to stores and cafes - we even walked back from the Griffith Observatory! It's a really special place, we picked grapefruits and mandarins from the garden, enjoyed the intimacy of the farmhouse and its garden, and the convenient location to explore LA.
Eliot was a great host and helped us out with a last minute stay. The home was clean and quite cozy, which was exactly what we were looking for. Eliot made sure to check in with us several times during our stay to see if there was anything we needed and was very responsive to any questions I had. We would definitely stay at Eliot's home again!
We had a wonderful time in Eliot's house. The garden and the house are peaceful and delightful. The decoration of the house is amazing! Morevover the house is very well located in the neighborough of Los Feliz. An oasis in the heart of Los Angeles! We certainly recommend this adress and wish to come back!
Even if Eliot wasn't an accommodating and friendly host, I would stay here again and again - the location is AMAZING! Feels like you are staying in a secluded countryside farmhouse, but then you step outside and you are in the middle of everything. Such a good location, I could go on and on.
