Cozy studio ohana w/private entrance, parking, small kitchen with stove, refrigerator, utensils, eat-in bar area for two, cable tv, sleeping loft (comfy queen bed with memory foam pillowtop), and a private fenced outdoor eating area. Walk to town.

The Space

The ohana is a special oasis with a spiritual vibe. You will be surrounded by icons of the Divine Mother, Hanuman, Krishna, and Buddha all welcoming you with open hearts. A great place to relax and go inward, or to use as basecamp for your Maui activities. Small private fenced yard with dining area, perfect to store kiteboards, surfboards, and SUPs.

Guest Access

We are walking distance to historic Makawao town with markets, restaurants, bars, yoga, acupuncture, salons and great boutiques. Easy walk to the bus stop or borrow one of our bikes and toodle around town. Yoga Mats, surfboards and kayaks also available, along with beach chairs and towels. Central to all Upcountry Maui activities, yet only a 10-mile drive (or 20-minute cycle) to Baldwin Beach.

Interaction with Guests

We can provide you complete privacy at all times, or you come by and hang out on the lanai of the main house and enjoy the beautiful unobstructed island and ocean view overlooking pineapple and sugar cane fields. Plentiful rainbows and gorgeous sunsets. We can provide tips on activities and local points of interest.

The Neighborhood

Greatest neighborhood in Makawao town. Very quiet, private, and safe. Semi-agricultural with goats, chickens, cattle. No street lights, so the nights are great for stargazing.

Getting around

Walking distance to Makawao bus stop. $2 gets you where you want to go on the Maui Bus (or $4 for all-day pass). Bus goes to/from airport every 90 minutes. We also have bicycles you can borrow if you prefer to spin around the island, but we are at 1500 ft elevation so it's a fun ride down to the beach, but a challenging ride back up. You can attach the bikes to the bus for the uphill ride.

Other Things to Note

We have a large yard with an expansive island and North Shore view that we love to share, but we have 2 dogs - a large Rottweiler and smaller poi dog (Koa and Lola). They are both super friendly and love to play but if you have dog-phobia or allergies you should stay out of the main yard.

We use only organic cleaning and laundry supplies and essential oils. Please let us know in advance if you have any specific allergies and we will try to accommodate.

The sleeping loft is accessed via a ladder. The couch downstairs is comfy for sleeping so if you prefer being grounded, let us know and we will provide you with additional bedsheets/blankets for a good night's rest on the couch.

  • Staying here was like a slice of heaven. Rita and family are extremely helpful and kind, but also gave us all the space we wanted. The cottage is very clean and has everything you would need. The bed is very comfortable, and Rita provided plenty of towels for the shower & beach. Makawao is a small town upcountry, so you are about 20 minutes to the nearest beach. We didn't find this a problem at all, as it was nice to be in the lush countryside, but a vehicle is definitely recommended to get around. Highly recommend staying here while in Maui!!!

  • Rita was super helpful, and the cottage was so cool. Loved it. I had checked into another place about 20 minutes away that I couldn't stay at because of mosquitos were a real problem. I emailed her early in the morning, and she replied later that day, and had the place ready within a few hours. If I come back to Maui anytime soon, would definitely stay here again. The loft actually stayed pretty cool at night which I didn't expect, and it was really comfortable, which is really important for me because I usually don't sleep well on vacation and that wasn't a problem.

  • I had such a nice time staying at Rita's place! It was perfectly cozy and I love the area. Makawao is an adorable town with a great, low-key vibe. I love that they don't use harsh chemicals to clean, and even use essential oils! Great if you like to cook or prepare food while you're traveling, since there's an oven/stove and a blender for smoothies. Comfortable, with more than enough space. Rita and her husband are very accommodating and made me feel right at home! I can't wait to come back!

I am from Makawao, HI, formerly of Malibu, CA. I'm a vegetarian, an organic gardener, I love family life (husband, 2 teenage daughters, 2 doggies). Quiet, clean, respectful. I also have 2 guest house rentals on Maui, so I appreciate the importance of privacy and cleanliness.
