A private, comfortable wooden cabin with en-suite shower room and use of a fridge. Excellent location for exploring the wonders of the Eden Valley and/or a stop-over en route to/from Scotland. Also a great location for walkers and cyclists.
We are near, but not in, or quite like the Lake District. More productive farmland and rolling meadows and definitely quieter and less frenetic. In fact, you really need to stay here for more than one night to properly appreciate the area (not a requirement). If you really want to be in the Lake District - then we suggest you look elsewhere!
Your accommodation will be an en-suite cabin in our garden behind our house. It has a comfortable double sofa bed/futon ( bed height with an extra memory foam mattress) and easy chairs with views over our garden to the Pennine Hills.
There isn't a kitchen but you will be able to make tea and coffee and your breakfast will be served in our porch/conservatory. It will be a choice of yogurt, cereal, fruit, juices, fresh (home made) bread/toast, pastries, tea and coffee. You can use the fridge and microwave in the porch which you can access at all times.
We can provide off-road parking but please note there is a narrow and uphill access - otherwise street park on the left hand side of the road going down the hill. We can also offer an evening meal and wine at additional cost with a menu by agreement (provided it is within our culinary capabilities).
Lazonby is a village of just over 1,000 people and the hill we live on runs down to the River Eden with lovely walks on both banks. We are on the Cumbria Cycle Route and I enjoy cycling around our valley. There is good Co-operative supermarket and Post Office, two pubs and a pleasant open-air swimming pool (heated). There are some excellent real ale and good food pubs in nearby villages.
You can arrive in Lazonby by train on the Carlisle to Leeds Line. We are just 8 miles to the north and east of Penrith in the picturesque Eden Valley. Penrith is on the main West Coast Rail Line from London to Glasgow. We are ideally located for a break in your journey to, or from Scotland - just a 10 minute drive from an M6 junction.
Access at any time to the cabin, the porch and a fridge and microwave.
Interaction with Guests
A major part of being involved with Airbnb is interaction with our guests. We like to know a little about prospective guests in advance of accepting a booking and we enjoy our exchanges without being overbearing. We are generally highly reluctant to accept requests from people who haven't posted a profile or who provide no information about themselves or their reasons for wanting to book with us.
We love the rural nature of our location, yet it has plenty of amenities on hand without having to go into Penrith. Some excellent pubs very close too.
A car is essential unless you are travelling on the Carlisle to Settle (Leeds) railway line or cycling.
Not too many other than be respectful of our property, relax and enjoy what's on offer. No smoking or dogs on the property, so please don't ask for an exemption. Once we have gone through the 'meet and greet' guests can have a key to the cabin to come and go as they please, but quietly.
Nigel and Christine made me very welcome. I found what I was looking for; a quiet private cabin in a beautiful village in beautiful countryside.
My son and I were both happy that we chose this cozy cabin in the wonderfully quiet and lovely town of Lazonby. The cabin suited our needs perfectly, with a nice size en-suite bathroom and comfortable sleeping arrangements. The bed was a comfortable futon, and then Nigel offered to arrange a bed on the floor for my son, which suited him just fine. Nigel and Christine went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to meet any needs we may have had. They were both friendly and we had great conversation, with both of them being patient with all of my questions. The area was as described - close enough to the Lake District to be convenient, but without all the traffic and hubbub of that area, especially over the Easter week holiday. We had a couple of delicious dinners at two places that Nigel recommended, and we were able to make the most of our time in the area by following the directions/suggestions that he and Christine took the effort to give us. We cannot compliment the lodging and our hosts enough, and we highly recommend this cabin to others.
We have just spent a wonderful 3 days in and around the Eden Valley whilst staying in Nigel & Christines cosy cabin. Our hosts were friendly and attentive without being intrusive and made our stay a pleasure. Would thoroughly recommend.
This was our first Airbnb experience. Nigel was very helpful and welcoming, especially as we booked last minute! Unfortunately we weren't there very long as had to be up and out early for a triathlon at Helvellyn, but Nigel left a good breakfast out for us including some lovely homemade jam.
The cabin was cosy, clean and very peaceful, the perfect stop before an early start!
We would definitely recommend and a shame we couldn't stay longer/explore the area.
We had two perfect stays at Nigel and Chris's Cabin on the way to and way back from our holiday in Scotland. They were very accommodating of our needs, making space for a travel cot and providing us with everything we needed to prepare a simple evening meal. We also enjoyed the home made wine! We would definitely stay again.
Our first Airbnb experience...and what a place to choose! We were warmly welcomed by Nigel & Chris. The cabin was perfect for our needs (an overnight stop en route to Scotland). We chose the location with Parkrun in mind. Penrith Parkrun was 15 mins drive away & Nigel even joined us! Back 'home' to home-baked bread and a selection of jams - perfect for us! We enjoyed the chats and reflections.... Thanks very much for a great stop.
On arrival we received an almost basil fawlty welcome, this was because we almost crashed into our home for the night, almost immediately we were welcomed with open arms by the lovely nigel and his wife sybil (christine) and then we knew we had found friends for life.
The cabin was very comfortable especially the bed, had all amenities necessary for a comfortable stay, topped off by a lovely breakfast with friendly chat and excellent company.
My wife and I are in our early 60s and we have lived together in rural Cumbria for nearly 40 years. We are outgoing and well travelled. We have couchsurfed (both hosting and being guests), exchanged our home and started with Airbnb in 2013 (both using and providing). We are tidy, organised, reliable and enjoy meeting new people.
We were both teachers before we went to live in Edmonton, Canada for four years in the early 1980s where Nigel was a post-graduate student. Currently, Christine is a Teaching Assistant and Nigel has retired from being a researcher and writer.
We have two grown up sons, one living in Victoria, Canada and one living in south west Cumbria. We have spent two summers recently visiting friends and family in Canada and are going back this summer. In 2013 we belated had our first holiday together in France and loved it so much we went back in 2014. Greece is a favourite holiday destination but our 'once in a lifetime' trip was to south west Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand in 2008.
Christine enjoys gardening and Nigel makes wine from various fruits. We both exercise regularly, keep in touch with friends worldwide and enjoy reading and watching good films.
