About This Listing
A private, comfortable cabin with en-suite shower room and use of fridge and microwave. Excellent location for exploring the wonders of the Eden Valley and/or a stop-over en route to/from Scotland. Also a great location for walkers and cyclists.
We are near, but not in, or quite like the Lake District. More productive farmland and rolling meadows and definitely quieter and less frenetic. In fact, you really need to stay here for more than one night to properly appreciate the area (not a requirement). If you really want to be in the Lake District - then we suggest you look elsewhere!
Your accommodation will be an en-suite cabin in our garden behind our house. It has a comfortable double sofa bed/futon ( bed height with an extra memory foam mattress) and easy chairs with views over our garden to the Pennine Hills.
There isn't a kitchen but you will be able to make tea and coffee and your breakfast will be served in our porch/conservatory. It will be a choice of yogurt, cereal, fruit, juices, fresh (home made) bread/toast, pastries, tea and coffee. You can use the fridge and microwave in the porch which you can access at all times.
We can provide off-road parking but please note there is a narrow and uphill access - otherwise street park on the left hand side of the road going down the hill. We can also offer an evening meal and wine at additional cost with a menu by agreement (provided it is within our culinary capabilities).
Lazonby is a village of just over 1,000 people and the hill we live on runs down to the River Eden with lovely walks on both banks. We are on the Cumbria Cycle Route and I enjoy cycling around our valley. There is good Co-operative supermarket and Post Office, two pubs and a pleasant open-air swimming pool (heated). There are some excellent real ale and good food pubs in nearby villages.
You can arrive in Lazonby by train on the Carlisle to Leeds Line. We are just 8 miles to the north and east of Penrith in the picturesque Eden Valley. Penrith is on the main West Coast Rail Line from London to Glasgow. We are ideally located for a break in your journey to, or from Scotland - just a 10 minute drive from an M6 junction.
Access at any time to the cabin, the porch and a fridge and microwave.
Interaction with Guests
A major part of being involved with Airbnb is interaction with our guests. We like to know a little about prospective guests in advance of accepting a booking and we enjoy our exchanges without being overbearing. We are generally highly reluctant to accept requests from people who haven't posted a profile or who provide no information about themselves or their reasons for wanting to book with us.
We love the rural nature of our location, yet it has plenty of amenities on hand without having to go into Penrith. Some excellent pubs very close too.
A car is essential unless you are travelling on the Carlisle to Settle (Leeds) railway line or cycling.
Other Things to Note
We offer a free meal and a glass of home wine if guests book for 3 nights.
Not too many other than be respectful of our property, relax and enjoy what's on offer. No smoking or dogs on the property, so please don't ask for an exemption. Once we have gone through the 'meet and greet' guests can have a key to the cabin to come and go as they please, but quietly.
We had a wonderful one-night stay with Nigel and Chris.
They were very helpful in answering questions before we made our booking and the welcome they gave us was excellent.
The cabin is just as described. Very clean and cosy, with a great ensuite shower room.
The breakfast offered us a nice selection of cereals, pastries etc and we certainly didn't go hungry!
If we are back in the area again, we will certainly be making a repeat booking!
We had a comfortable and relaxing stay with Nigel and Christine. They made us most welcome. We enjoyed chatting with them and also enjoyed the cabin and breakfast. It was well situated for travelling onto Scotland and had everything we needed for the time we were there. It was very clean and we also enjoyed listening to the music available in the cabin
This is a MUST STAY stop. Lazonby (Eden Valley) is a magical English village, the cabin is adorable and cozy, and Nigel and his wife are friendly, welcoming and pretty hilarious. My wife and I last minute had chosen to stay here on our way to Manchester. We had been driving around Scotland and England, a bit tired of course, and this stop turned out to be a breath fresh air at the perfect time in our trip. We hadn't looked into Eden Valley since it was a pretty quick change of plans, but it ended up being our favorite stop in England. We sat and talked with Nigel and his wife a few times in the 1-2ish days we were there and learned a lot about the area they lived in and their lives as well. They recommended some off the beaten track things to do in the valley - one tired out to be the best meal we had in England. All in all, it really was our favorite stop, full of green rolling fields, traditional English meals, mysterious castle ruins, perfectly friendly hosts, a lovely a squeaky clean room, and an olde English village that'll relax you and excite you at the same time. If we ever make it back to England Nigel and his cabin will be a revisited place.
Had a great stay with Nigel and Chris. Very helpful and friendly. Told a great place for dinner. (Take first right, drive to T junction and turn right , slide left when you reach the village .. aye Nigel ;-) ... ) Room warm and comfy. Good breakfast and great chats over breakfast. Would definitely recommend.
Nigel and Christine were the perfect hosts; very gracious and charming. We spent some delightful hours chatting with them over a delicious breakfast or in the evening after a great hike. They are both very interesting and friendly people who took a real interest in us. Nigel really helped us with directions on the various hikes in the area and recommended some wonderful restaurants.
Nigel and his wife Chris were beyond welcoming and great hosts. They gave me great suggestions on local places to eat and things to see near their house. Nigel helped and even got a neighbor to come by when I had a bit of car trouble one morning...
The cabin was perfect for me. It was simple but nice overall, albeit a bit on the cold side (but they provided a space heater which worked great when I did need it).
About the Host, Nigel
My wife and I are in our early 60s and we have lived together in rural Cumbria for nearly 40 years. We are outgoing and well travelled. We have couchsurfed (both hosting and being guests), exchanged our home and started with Airbnb in 2013 (both using and providing). We are tidy, organised, reliable and enjoy meeting new people.
We were both teachers before we went to live in Edmonton, Canada for four years in the early 1980s where Nigel was a post-graduate student. Currently, Christine is a Teaching Assistant and Nigel has retired from being a researcher and writer.
We have two grown up sons, one living in Victoria, Canada and one living in south west Cumbria. We have spent two summers recently visiting friends and family in Canada and are going back this summer. In 2013 we belated had our first holiday together in France and loved it so much we went back in 2014. Greece is a favourite holiday destination but our 'once in a lifetime' trip was to south west Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand in 2008.
Christine enjoys gardening and Nigel makes wine from various fruits. We both exercise regularly, keep in touch with friends worldwide and enjoy reading and watching good films.
