Jane & Doug were wonderful hosts and the apartment and garden were fantastic! We loved being able to have a nice place with parking! The West Van neighborhood is beautiful, just a 15 minute drive or a quick bus ride from a nearby stop to get to the city. The apartment was clean and very nicely decorated. There were little motion activated lights that made it easy to get around if lights were off. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom had a nice shower and tub. It was so nice to have the delicious homemade scones and special toppings for breakfast with coffee or tea – there was even bread for toast and fresh fruit. Thank you, Jane & Doug, for making us feel like houseguests instead of airbnb clients!!
For us this was a return visit.
Scones and Tea is a perfect location for our visits to West Vancouver.
Jane and Doug , as usual, made us feel very welcome.
Jane even made Banana Bread instead of scones for our breakfast treat. And the all one could want for breakfast is provided for us.
I enjoyed my stay at Jane's. Location perfect for access to sea wall and coffee. Jane and family most pleasant and accommodating for any and all needs. The accommodation was everything they said it was.....and good value. Will return.
Jane was so welcoming to my husband and I before we even arrived. She made it easy and convenient for us to arrive at an acceptable time and set us up for our stay. The place we very warm and inviting and Jane left us delicious homemade scones. We were visiting over New Years and she even provided us with our own miniature bottles of champaigne. It was so thoughtful! Thank you Jane for all you did for us and our 'mini' vacation.
The pros are clean, comfortable and great location, the cons are lack of security and sleeping next to the furnace room.
Pros: Jane's place was spotless with a very comfortable bed. The decor is retro kitschy, like staying at grandmother's house. She is very kind host who baked scones (delicious!) and left prepared snacks, drinks. The location is great, two blocks from the major bus route on Marine Drive in an upscale neighborhood. I stayed as I had business in West Van and the closest hotel was in North Van or downtown. Jane goes out of her way to ensure guests are comfortable.
Cons: Security is an issue. The finished raised basement is divided into two with the folding screen divider. There is no guest bolt lock to prevent someone from upstairs going into the basement. Canadians generally have a false sense of security. In 2012, a report showed Vancouver and area had 4x more break-ins than NYC, it has the highest crime per capita than any other city in Canada. Last year, only 3 blocks west around 25th street, a gang of thieves broke into twenty homes. The crime increase is due to the unreasonably high cost of living in Vancouver and West Vancouver is considered a rich neighborhood. The back door is bolt lockable, but has a window where it would be simple to break and reach in to turn the bolt lock.
The other issue is the bedroom is right beside the furnace room. With closing the bedroom door, the sound is barely noticeable, but my concern was the maintenance. I was nervous about the safety, opened the doors to read the sticker and burst out laughing when I saw a Halloween tombstone leaning up against the furnace saying RIP! Well, it was cleaned August 2013 and fully serviced ten years ago. The earliest sticker is from 1993, so the furnace is at least 22 years old and the normal life of a furnace is 25. They also use it as a storage closet keeping clothes within a couple feet of the furnace. There is a working carbon monoxide detector but that doesn't help if it catches on fire and the guest is sleeping six feet from it. Well, I lost some sleep thinking about it, especially when the floor track lighting mysteriously turns on whenever the furnace fires up, guess it is the ghost that goes with the Halloween decorations, lol!
Helpful hints: The snacks are well laid out and prepared, but if one doesn't eat the standard North American diet out of a box or EWG's dirty dozen fruit, then it is worthwhile asking in advance not to set stuff out. Security would have been less of a worry if I was traveling with someone.
We are surprised, and taken aback with Laura's comments. Firstly, she gave no indication that she was concerned about safety or the furnace during her stay, and only made a comment on check-out morning (it's pretty hard to respond to a concern if you are not notified until after the stay). When questioned, I informed her that we do indeed have our furnace serviced every year (by a licensed gas fitter). We could even have showed her the documentation if she doubted us. Secondly, the external entry door lock is to the local building code. In addition, the bedroom door also has a lock which the guest can use if they so wish. The area of Vancouver we live in is very safe community, and no, there are not "gangs of thieves" roaming the area as she suggests.
As for the food, we provide fresh fruit and other breakfast items as a courtesy and at no extra charge to the guest.
Our host, Jane, was there to greet us. She had allowed us to arrive early. She made us feel very "at home".
The location for us was perfect. We are originally from West Vancouver so we felt like we were back in our own neighbourhood.
The Recreation Centre, for example, is a very short walk.
Everything was thought of ahead of time, and we lacked for nothing.
It is certainly our plan to stay with Scones and Tea many times.
Jane is a great host, quickly responsive and helpful with all our questions, before and during our stay.
The apartment was exactly as it appears on pictures: spacious, clean and comfortable!
We love to travel, especially to historic places. Living in Vancouver, we also love the outdoors and sharing our beautiful city with guests. We're non-smokers, and we enjoy hiking, biking, golfing & snowshoeing 20 minutes from where we live.
