The Space

*If you are using instant book, please assume check-in is 5.30 pm or after*. (We can often do earlier, but to be safe...)

This is a private room with queen bed in our beautiful, charming, duplex brownstone. The room is large and overlooks the street with huge window and a decorative fireplace.

The apt has two bedrooms upstairs (we sleep in one), couch, tv, sitting area, bathroom, huge dining table, and huge farm kitchen downstairs, PLUS a private backyard. Our home also has all the original details of a late 1800's building - trim, wood floors, tin ceilings, decorative fireplace, exposed brick, etc...A true Brooklyn brownstone experience.

We are on the Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy border, one block from the Franklin avenue C train - 20 mins to downtown Manhattan. The apt is one block from a busy business area with groceries, coffee, laundry, delis, etc. Charming restaurants are within 15 min walk in all directions. The neighborhood beginning to gentrify, with new and fancy coffee shops, restaurants, and cheese stores opening all the time. We are on a block full of families and friendly neighbors - it's very safe. You get the street cred of staying three blocks from where Biggie Smalls grew up (and shopping where he used to bag groceries), as well as the kale salads and cucumber cocktails that are the face of the new Brooklyn.

Prospect park is a 20 min walk or 10 min bike ride, Williamsburg a few stops on the G train, Ft Greene and the Brooklyn Flea Market an easy walk, train ride, or bike ride.

Free wireless, free and easy street parking available, free coffee/tea/breakfast basics.

We have one cat who will want to come in and out freely, and will also probably want to snuggle with you, and 3 hens who you can avoid or interact with as much as you like. Fresh eggs are there for the cooking if you like (fewer in fall/winter)! You can keep the cat out of your room, or invite him to snuggle in your bed.

There is a private back yard for your use, complete with roses, flowers and herbs, picnic table, and 3 laying hens.

We sometimes foster dogs for NYC rescues. Usually we don't have a dog in the house, but if this is a problem for you please tell us so we can be sure not to have a pup during your stay. We only foster friendly dogs who have been carefully evaluated w/ no signs of aggression/guarding/etc whatsoever.

We share the house with you but are busy NYers (a chef and a teacher/gardener/food educator). You are free to use the kitchen and common areas. We've traveled all over Africa, Southeast Asia, Portugal and Italy, and much of the States, usually staying in airbnb places. So we're happy to meet and host fellow visitors.

Feel free to ask any questions about the apt or the neighborhood. We think our apt is a gem of a find in the madness of NYC. Like staying in a farmhouse in the middle of the city.

Pets negotiable.

Guest Access

Guests have access to everything but our bedroom! All spaces are shared with us (except guest bedroom!)

Interaction with Guests

We are almost always here during our guests' stay. While we enjoy meeting and chatting with guests, we are also busy New Yorkers with full work schedules. Usually, we catch up at the end of the day, or sometimes share a glass of wine with guests. Generally we give guests lots of space, but are very happy to answer any questions and share some chit chat.

Getting around

We are one block from the C train and several buses, as well as a citibike stop. We about a 6 minute walk from the express A train at Nostrand Ave. We are also 1 block from the "S" shuttle, which connects to the 2/3/4/5/B/etc.

Other Things to Note

We often have foster puppies in the house, taking care of them until a family adopts them, so they don't have to stay in a shelter. They sleep in our room and are usually crated if we are out. Please let us know if this is a problem for you.

The house was built in the late 1800's and the stairs are very creaky, along with some other quirks. Be prepared for a lovely charming house and the creaks that come with it. :)

  • Jenny was a great and accomodating hostess, allowing us to drop our bags off well before the actual check in time so that we could head out to Manhattan for the day. She very thoughtfully offered multiple sets of the keys for the house so that both me and my partner could have a set, which was nice. The bedroom was spacious and clean with lots of natural light. Super comfortable bed and the neighborhood is pretty quiet so even though the room faces the street, we weren't bothered by street noise. My partner usually struggles to sleep through the night in unfamiliar places, but she slept like a rock. Street parking was free and plentiful; we found a spot right by the house every time we needed it. Jenny (email hidden) of nearby local places for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Very convenient to the subway into Manhattan which is just a block away. Every trip to Midtown took 35-40 mins all told (walking to the station and train riding time included), so that is something to keep in mind, but if you don't need to be back and forth from the house to Midtown all day that's pretty (website hidden) part of all was the absolutely adorable and super friendly foster puppy - she was the highlight of our stay!

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Jenny and Alex's place, the room is lovely! The house is located conveniently close to a subway station, and the neighbourhood felt pretty safe. The place was a bit noisy from time to time, you can hear the neighbours upstairs walking in and out, but this wasn't a problem for us as we brought earplugs. Jenny and Alex were really nice hosts, Alex even baked us some cookies that were delicious, as were the fresh eggs we had every morning form the chickens in the backyard! Definitely recommended.

  • Hosts Jenny and Alex were very quick to respond and when my mom arrived the house was clean and exactly as advertised. They have a really nice cat and a comfortable bed. The neighborhood is a great location, close to train, lots of great restaurants and bars. If she comes to visit me in NY again soon, we will definitely look into re-booking.

  • We enjoyed staying at Jenny and Alex's Brooklyn farmhouse! The details of this home are completely charming. Everything was neat and tidy upon our arrival. The amount of space was incredible and we felt very at home their. We have to agree with all the other reviewers that the cat is absolutely adorable (and I'm not a cat person so that says a lot!) It was nice being conveniently located around the corner from the metro and about a 30 min commute to the island. The backyard space was a dream! We loved the little chicken coop out back and getting fresh eggs for breakfast. Jenny was so sweet to pick us fresh flowers from her garden and have them for us when we got home our first night. Highly recommend their home to anyone who wants to stay in Brooklyn!

  • I had great experience staying with Alex and Jenny! Very easy commute to W Village, where I had to be every morning. Metro is just around the corner from apartment. I liked the neighborhood, found great coffee shop few minutes away. It felt like I was not in the city with a nice backyard garden, and cozy room.

  • Jenny, Alex, and their home was a wonderful experience.

My visit with them was my first time being in the east coast. That being said, Jenny was very welcoming (email hidden)e's very knowledgeable with the area and probably saved us a lot of time with our commute. She had very good recommendations, especially in the Williamsburg area. We were invited to a wine and cheese get together, which sadly we couldn't make.

The room was very clean and comfortably decorated, we even had fresh flowers when we arrived. Their home is very close to the C & G stations, if my memory serves me well, which is a huge plus.

All in all, my experience was great. I wish I had more time to hang out with Jenny and Alex, but we were out and about getting lost in the city. I would definitely recommend this place if you're planning to visit the Brooklyn area.

  • Jenny and Alex were very kind and welcoming hosts. The house is conveniently located near a subway station (be sure to take the C instead of the A express or you'll end up one stop past!) and (email hidden) to return to after spending time in bustling Manhattan. The neighbourhood is quite mixed and in the midst of a bit of gentrification, the old parts of the neighbourhood mixing with the new.

The house itself is charming with a friendly cat coming and going as he pleases. As it is an older home, sound insulation is a bit of an issue. Jenny and Alex are very courteous about this, but there was one night where the tenants upstairs had a bit of a party and were noisy late into the night. Nothing a pair of earplugs can't solve, but something to consider nonetheless. The other five nights everything quieted down for night time.

Lots of great books and pamphlets were collected in the room, which were useful in planning our days. New York is a big city, and any help to us first time visitors in choosing destinations was, well, a big help. The room was large and filled with interesting trinkets from the hosts' own travels. All in all, this (email hidden) for a traveler to rest their weary feet.

  • We had a great, trouble-free time on our trip. Jenny and Alex were flexible and made us feel right at home. As the advertisement says, the brownstone and room are indeed charming. The subway stop is literally right around the corner.

Chat adorable. Jardin génial pour le petit-déjeuner.

About
We are a Brooklyn based couple who are passionate about food, education and travel. Jenny is an NYC public high school teacher/gardener/food educator, and Alex is a professional chef. Our lives in Brooklyn are filled with good friends, lots of fun, and hard work. Whenever we get the chance, we explore other parts of the world. We've just moved back home from a year abroad, living in Central Africa and traveling extensively. Airbnb is our favorite way to find accommodation when we travel, and now that we're home we're excited to offer a welcoming home to people visiting the city.
