The Abundant Nature and Animals surrounding us in the jungle is paradise. good food, good people, and good energy.
The listing was excellent, the location was just beautiful, and the people there were unforgettable. Nico is the main person running the show and taking care of everyone. He is extremely friendly, can speak like 80 languages (some of which haven't even been discovered hahaha) and is everyone's friend. His story, along with the chef's and everyone else's stories alone are worth visiting Essence. The food is incredible, the crowd is incredibly friendly, and it removes all the drawbacks of a hostel type living arrangement. I was a little apprehensive about it, but we somehow got upgraded to something else since we got our room and it got upgraded for two nights.
Everyone communicated when we needed to and answered the phones when we were lost, it was dark, and we had no idea whether we were even supposed to be going to the right place hahaha. Once we got to the place, it was like an island/paradise type location that you just would not expect to see. The property is huge and they have a ton of tours nearby for anyone to visit to spend the time during the day. If you decide to go on a hike or anywhere, get the hiker sandwich. OMG THE MOST DELICIOUS SANDWICH IN OUR LIVES. It has some super fresh bread, avocado, eggs, tomato, lettuce or spinach, some cheese, and a slice of heaven or something (not sure where they got it). When you're tired, hungry, and it's been raining all day, this sandwich will make you feel like you can take on Everest (or just the local hike to the waterfall hahaha).
Be forewarned, though, that the local weather somehow got super rainy around the time we went (mid-February 2015), so pack for some dry clothes if you haven't left your home country yet. It's generally advisable to keep your electronics in a dry bag on any hikes (or get pro gear which can last), and bring lots of love to share with all the new friends you'll make at this place. I can't say enough about the great times we had with the two other couples we met.
Only downside to this place: the shower cycled from super hot or super cold in our room and it only had moderate temperature for a brief period of time. Maybe it's plumbing or something, but a small issue like it doesn't change how much we loved the place. I just wish we showed up at a better time, but the weather wasn't in our control at all.
Essence is a decent place to stay! Nice people, nice environment. Because of a traffic jam in San Jose we arrived late but there was someone waiting for us. Since we went fishing in Cano Negra we did not fully explored the direct surroundings. The impressions was very good.
I would highly recommend this place if you want to explore Arenal and all its features.
We had a wonderful stay at Essence. It is in such a beautiful spot and worth the trip along the long dirt road to reach it. The whole place had a warm feel. Our children were welcomed and they even made a birthday cake for me, much appreciated. We enjoyed participating in the preparation of the delicious evening meals too. Highly recommended.
Essence is amazing. After two weeks of traveling up and down Costa Rica's Pacific Coast, this experience was more than we could have asked for. The staff was friendly, helpful and skilled, the location was breathtaking, and we left feeling refreshed and eager to visit again. We really appreciated Essence's emphasis on health and wellness. The vegetarian meals, prepared by their very talented and friendly chef, were the culinary highlight of our trip and appealed to hardcore vegetarians and omnivores alike. Yoga with Melissa was truly delightful and enlightening. The location is sublime, the people are friendly and soulful. If you are looking for a soul-nourishing retreat removed from the touristy mega resorts that flank Arenal, and would like to experience pampering without breaking the bank, you need to visit Essence Arenal.
Night's 2-4 in Costa Rica: Essence Arenal is a cute place with multiple rooms far on a dirt road (30 min drive) past Arenal Volcano. Every morning and evening they have family dinners with one meal for a price-they welcomed us the first night with a yummy dinner. The staff was all very friendly, kind, and helpful! During our stay here, we hiked around Arenal National Park, kayaked the lake, hung out in the local area of Tabacon Hot Springs (for free), and walked around Essene Arenal's cute farm and swam in their pond. And yes, all this while raining! They have a regular macaw bird visitor and during our stay we saw Howler monkey's just in the tree's in the back (it took me two days to figure out that the awful dying wail was them!) The Essence Arenal hot tub was a nice treat and they even built a fire to help dry our wet shoes (note, once you get wet, you will stay wet!). The only minor problems here were the abundance of bugs in the room (for the place is in the jungle) and the hot water problems (lack of and then one second burning hot, the next freezing cold, and then no more hot water...) Other than that, great place to stay while exploring the Arenal area!
Essence was the most wonderful accommodation. I have backpacked across North America and never experienced such beauty as I saw in the rainforest at Arenal. The staff at Essence was wonderful and friendly, the guests who you can dine with each night are from all over the world and have great stories, and the room was exactly what we needed! We did yoga on two occasions with Melissa at 6:30am with a lake, rainforest and finca view, got caught in a downpour in the freshwater swimming pool up by the Farm, and walked each evening through El Castillo and up the hill to Essence. We heard monkeys, saw a variety of birds, and loved the constant sightings of horses and cows grazing in the area. This is actually the most beautiful place in the world! We will be back soon and will no doubt recommend to all our friends coming to Costa Rica!! Also, get a massage with Melissa and eat there for every meal you can! Seriously, I might quit my job and move there to volunteer.
We had a great stay at Essence Arenal! It was such a treat to stay on their property which included a nice hike to a sustainable farm. Dinner was also delicious! We left wishing we had more time there.
