I'm living in São Paulo but I have this little studio in Salvador, Bahia, where I have lived for 18 years. It's a small loft ideal for a sinale or a couple, located in Dois de Julho, the central district in Salvador, 5 minutes walking to MAM (Bahia Modern Museum of Art) - you can swin at the small beach within the Park of Sculptures beside the Bahia Marina. Every Saturday at sunset has a jam session with local jazz bands, very good sound. You also can go to Pelourinho, 15 minutes walking - historic center night life, concerts and restaurants and either 15 minutes by bus / taxi to Porto da Barra, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - calm seas, warm and transparent.
This loft consists of a mezzanine with double futon bed and fan (no air conditioner), bathroom, small kitchen to prepare breakfast and quick meals and veranda with an amazing view of the sea and the Bay of All Sants. Place is lush and sunny. The sunset takes place around 18 hours right in front, on our porch. A beautiful image that you can enjoy lying in a hammock. The location is ideal for a person or couple, travelers wanting a real sense of the city life.
Dois de Julho is an old and historic neighborhood, characterized by narrow streets, paved with old fashioned paving stones, baroque architecture mixed with modern architecture, dogs and children playing in front of their houses. You can walk quietly up to the Largo (one block from home) and will find a sort of restaurants of homemade food (good and cheap), small markets, a pharmacy, fruit and vegetable stands and bakeries. There are public transport buses to almost all other neighborhoods and taxi ranks as well.
WE DON'T HAVE WI-FI.
THERE ARE LAN HOUSES AT THE CORNER OF OUR STREET.
Extremely charming loft in a lovely neighbourhood. A hidden gem in Salvador. Perfect size for one or two people. Great value, highly recommend :)
I had a great time at Pat's small loft in Salvador. It was exactly as the pictures and description say - a small space, but with everything you need. Watching the sky from the balcony was my favorite part of the place. Perfect for one or two people. I liked the neighborhood - within walking distance of Pelourinho but in a more authentic and lively part of town. I felt safe, even though you have to be a bit careful at night. Pat's neighbor was there, and was very friendly and helpful. Pat was very communicative and gave me great information about how to find the place and get around. The only downside was that the mattress is a little thin, so I don't recommend this place for anyone with a bad back.
Pat was very efficient and helpful. The place is cute and interesting. You are really part of the neighbourhood although the flat and terrace is really relaxing and private. Got taxis late at night but felt generally very safe in the area and very comfortable inside.
The reservation was canceled 7 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Patricia is an amazingly kind and considerate hostess. There was a maintenance issue prior to my arrival that she closely monitored throughout my stay to ensure my comfort.
The loft is bright, cheerful, pristine and incredibly insect free! There are no windows, so I expected a few pesky varmints, however, other than the neighbors cat stopping by to investigate me once, I was not bothered by any pests. Citronella and mosquito netting kept the mossies at bay.
As you can see from the pics, the view is stunning! I did have to wrench myself away from that picturesque seascape each morning.
Because the studio is windowless, the scents and sounds of the neighbors flow in as though they're in the studio with you. The neighbor's parrot mimics the cry of a baby. (It took me a full day to figure that out).
The neighborhood is nestled perfectly in the bustling historic district without being in the midst of tourist traffic. Attractions and public transportation are only a few minutes away by foot.
Standard precautions assured my safety walking through the neighborhood, so I never felt threatened.
Pat's place is delightful little retreat for a couple or a solo traveler.
The loft is very nicely decorated. Great view on the marina. It is close (15 min walk) to main tourist attractions.
Be aware that there are no glass windows so you will hear the noise from outside (although the area was not noisy when we stayed there) and be exposed to mosquitoes. Also, it is safest to take a taxi at night to go back to the place.
It was a very nice experience for me to live in Pat's beautyful apartment for a few days... I arrived late in the evening and she arranged a friend who gave me the keys at the airport...the quartier centro is close to the tourist center pelorinho. It's a 15min walk. Nearby the apartment is a small market and typical restaurants. I felt save in the area but some might prefer a taxi. The apartment is very nice with Ocean view!
I stayed at Pats studio apartment for just over a month. It was a good experience for me.
Likes: The view from the balcony is fantastic, and Pat has really tastefully and artistically decorated the apartment to make it feel both modern and rustic. The area is very active during the weekdays, and you'll be greeted with the sounds and smells of the average Brazilian marketplace: beef, chicken, fish, veggies, and fruit all laid out for sale. And if you can't make it to the large grocery store, have many small stores to buy anything else you need. I was able to support my fruit fetish very easily. There are also lots of great little restaurants in the area around Ave Sete de Setembro if you're up for some exploring. Pat also changed the shower head for me when I let her know the hot water wasn't working properly. Also was able to walk to many different parts of the city from there, from Pelourinho to Barra and beyond. Buses were easily available and accessible.
Challenges: mosquitoes galore, there is no escaping them in Salvador, and at the studio, the windows and doors don't have any netting or glass barrier so you'll be bitten all through the day unless you burn citronella continuously. (email hidden) which helped for sleeping. Secondly, since there is no glass over the windows or doors, all sounds and smells from neighbors activities came through as though they were right next to my head (e.g. cats fighting, dogs baking, pet birds, telephone and general conversation, cars), and I got a few visits from other outside insects and cat. Internet was not constant throughout apt area, making it difficult to make internet calls, watch video, etc. it was best for just email activities and light browsing and also went out a couple of times during my trip. Lastly the area is pretty deserted on the weekends which made it difficult to feel comfy and safe 'roaming the streets' as I love to do, but I managed.
All in all a good experience. Would stay there again. Worked for my needs.
