Location

Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

The Greyhound Inn is a Grade II listed building whose frontage dates from c. 1790. The black glazed header bricks are an unusual feature. The rear of the property is a late Victorian addition. Records suggest that it has been a pub since c. 1870.

One of its claims to fame is that it is reported to be the last place in the UK where the Riot Act was read out in response to an uprising of locals against the then owner of Antwicks Manor in the early 1900s.

Letcombe Regis is an historical village, which has previously boasted 3 manor houses. The oldest now standing is The Old Manor, an early 17th C building but before that on the site of the current 19th C Antwicks Manor was the original moated medieval royal hunting lodge used by King John. The third, Letcombe Manor, was replaced in 2008 by Richmond Letcombe Regis, a purpose built retirement community, now an integral part of village life.

St Andrew's church stands on a mound at the centre of the village. An earlier church is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and parts of the present church date from the l2th century. An obelisk in the churchyard records the death of George King Hipango, a Maori chief who came to England to train as a Christian minister. He died here of tuberculosis when he was 19 years old, while staying at the vicarage.

Further back in history, there is an Iron Age fort, called Segsbury Camp, at the top of the road leading out of the village to the Berkshire Downs (not a through road). It is also known as Letcombe Castle and covers 27 acres of farmland. The views from the top of this hill are wonderful and you can join the ancient Ridgeway path at this point.
