Special House/Pet Sitting 7/15-22nd.-$140 week. Esperanza. Patronales 7/13-20-Plaza Carnival & Events nightly! Perfect for couples or solo. Lockable room, full size bed, hot shower*, bath towels, bed linens, Internet, parking, safe 8 minute walk to the Malecon boardwalk shops and Biobay tour meeting points.

The Space

In Esperanza. Guests enter through the carport. which leads to the south deck entrance-passing the outdoor shower. Hot shower indoors (water flows from the "on-demand" heater- directly attached to the shower head), there is an industrial fan, bath towels and bed linens in the room. The bed is full size. Quiet, green-abundant fruit trees (no harsh chemical shampoos, conditioners, please) and surprise harvests or special treats. Wood deck to the south is cool and perfect for lounging. Cool breezes and sunsets are glimpsed from the large open courtyard area. Mature Manila coconut tree is harvested 3-4 times a year for sweet water and soft meat. Large canario flowers adorn the concrete wall. The main living area has comfortable couches and DVD's, cable TV at time-ask if interested. There is a shared bathroom and dining area. Raw foods can be prepared, e.g. salads, sandwiches, pre-cooked foods and leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator.

Internet is available in the livingroom, local internet is being phased out by May 2014. Bring your own large beach towel please-LOVE foundation items available Fall 2014. Surprise treats of fruit grown on the property (key limonade, avocado, etc.) will be offered as available. Continental breakfast is $7 per person per day, must be ordered in advanced, paid for at check-in and is available starting at 8a.

Guest Access

Lounge in livingroom (ac available), Internet, linens, bath towels, (bring your own large beach towel). Continental breakfast is available for $5 per person per day daily from 8-10a- Jan 7-through May 1. Request at reservation time and pay in cash at check-in. I would greatly appreciate help with harvesting, for which you will reap benefits:-) Refrigerator access only to store fresh food and leftovers. Carport parking or off street is available, depending on number of guests.

Interaction with Guests

Hands on/ hands off, it's up to you. I want to know when to expect you, give you an orientation to the island and my home, know how to reach you in transit and on island (in case something comes up, i.e. if you miss the ferry, I need to alert you to home projects that affect access, power, etc.) and when you are planning to depart so we can arrange a key drop off system.

The Neighborhood

I love that it's people quiet in the daytime. There are several small mini grocery stores in walking distance. We are close to restaurants, the beach and spectacular orange, pink, purple and gold sunrises and sunsets from the piers.

Getting around

Publicos are easy enough to get. You can get an impromptu ride along the Malecon by waving to the driver to stop and they will tell you how much it cost. Practice short phrases, out of courtesy and expediency like 'cuanto cuesta?; va a el pueblo o playa (ñame), lancha (Ferry Dock)?' You can also reserve a transport in advance for early morning ferry drop off or excursions to several beaches. Rental cars abound, consider renting a kayak to get to Sun Bay or Media Luna.
Vieques has beautiful beaches and has been ranked in several travel magazines-come For more than The Biobay experience. Patronales in July, Three Kings day parade and The Race For The cure are good local Events.

Other Things to Note

Guests enter through the carport which leads to the south deck entrance-passing the outdoor shower. Hot shower (water flows from the "on-faucet" heater- a standard used in Puerto Rico), there is an industrial fan, bath towels and bed linens in the room. The bed is full size. The tiled north balcony has a hammock and glider. Assistance with harvesting is greatly appreciated. Ask about Spanish lessons, volunteering with the L.O.V.E. Movement. FYI-The ferry schedule is affected by the height of the seas-Vieques Sound and Passage- and informs the captain's decision for your safety and may delay departure, limit the number of passengers, vehicles, etc.

  • Wonderful stay! Dr. Mona is extremely helpful. She knows everything in the island. When we went outside at night, she offered us a mosquito coil, which literally saved us from being bite! And her dogs are very friendly. They even went to beach with us!

  • Dr. Mona’s place had everything I was looking for… walking distance to Vieques social scene, peace and quiet, comfy and clean sleeping space, and dogs. Her dogs are awesome. I was a solo traveler and first-timer to Vieques and Dr. Mona was accommodating in every way possible, even helping me coordinate a volunteer opportunity at the local animal shelter. She knows many people on the island and everyone loves her. It's also clear that she cares very much about the natural environment, local community, and helping others. Do yourself a favor... If you're staying in Vieques and are thinking of going hostel, spend the extra few bucks and stay at Dr. Mona's.

  • As read in the description, a very noisy place. Don't forget your earplugs!
The place is correct, Mona is giving many informations (maybe too much...). But she's kind.

  • Dr. Mona has a very pleasant and friendly personality. It was nice chatting with her and meeting her pets. Although I am a little scared of dogs I am not familiar with, her pets were very calm and friendly. I was comfortable with them roaming around the house. The room is a bit small but its comfortable and adequate for two, as you'll anyways be out exploring the beautiful island and not spending much time in the room. The location is great, just 10 mins walk to the Flamboyant street (its kind of a beach boardwalk with plenty of nice bars and restaurants) and about 20 mins walk to Sun Bay (which is beautiful, a must see). Dr. Mona was very helpful and promptly responded to all my concerns and questions during the communications we had before our stay. She gave us a heads up on the availability of ferry tickets and gave us publico and taxi numbers and any other assistance we needed regarding the island before or during our stay.

  • Dr Mona was very communicative and gracious about her place. It was a little hard to find (my iPhone put it at a different intersection, and the numbers are a bit unpredictable out there...) but we eventually made it there. The place is about a 10 min walk to the beach. Her dogs were great -- met us at the bench on our last day. Very sweet.

  • We really loved our week on Vieques Island at Mona's house. Our room had a nice fan which kept us cool when it was hot outside. The house has all you need, including hot water, but we didn't take a single hot shower in a week as it was pretty warm!
Mona is a very charming person whose tranquillity and happiness are contagious and we were very happy to talk with her about life, our future and especially about Esperanza and beautiful Isla Vieques!
She knows so much about the island and was able to give us many tips on where to go, what to do etc. Mona was kind enough to share with us some produce from her own garden when this was available, which we really appreciated!

All in all, if you want to experience the best of Vieques, without the hustle and bustle of all-inclusive, expensive resorts, Mona's place is where you should go!

    March 2014
  • Our stay at Dr. Mona's house was wonderful! It's a comfortable spot with a beautiful back patio and garden, only a short walk from the beach, and lots of friendly pets. Dr. Mona was a very nice host - she set up a great breakfast for us one morning, and had lots of good recommendations for island spots to visit. The only thing I would say is that if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs, as neighbor birds and dogs get started early. Overall, a great experience at Dr. Mona's!

I love the playa, sunrise, sunset, mid day swim, late afternoon float-I should be there now, in fact, I could stay there all day! I am a paradox- a Water lover who es [paradoxically] mierdo de aqua! Still learning Viequense Spanish to communicate and study the culture-an anthropologist at heart. My goal: Yo quiero abierto El Colegio de la Gente en Vieques. The L.O.V.E. Movement is focused on rescuing human souls globally. Locally we will start with a hybrid Spanish-English pilot course scheduled through the El Centro de Aprendizaje en Nueva Parcellas Esperanza that starts in Spring 2014-maybe you can be a visiting language partner during your stay at the Retreat. A Hybrid person (ask), I am a widow, who saw my Ti enjoy our home in Vieques in his last twenty-two months, and remain in his beautiful Puerto Rico to fulfill new dreams. My new mantra is "Be Happy Now", dreams of sailing on Catamarans, traveling to South America, South Africa and Australia. I am learning art forms to go with the found art objects I make, love making big leaf plants grow. I want to learn how to cook and to preserve my tropical fruits to bolster my joy. I enjoy a good 'chick'/action flick on Sunday morning. Yes, I am green, in terms of protecting my beautiful fruit trees and devouring them especially avocados. I'm a vegan-vegetarian when necessary- who doesn't cook much so my dogs will be looking for any meat leftovers you have. I have a protective animal family- 4 out of 5 dogs are related. There are 2 outdoor/indoor adult cats and one kitten who is winning my heart and the jealousy of some of the others pets. I like to offer guests as much privacy as possible so let me know flat out if I'm getting too chatty. My hope is that we 'exchange gifts' in this encounter that speak of and share our individual sources of 'happiness'. Disfruta :-)
