Hands on/ hands off, it's up to you. I want to know when to expect you, give you an orientation to the island and my home, know how to reach you in transit and on island (in case something comes up, i.e. if you miss the ferry, I need to alert you to home projects that affect access, power, etc.) and when you are planning to depart so we can arrange a key drop off system.
I love that it's people quiet in the daytime. There are several small mini grocery stores in walking distance. We are close to restaurants, the beach and spectacular orange, pink, purple and gold sunrises and sunsets from the piers.
Publicos are easy enough to get. You can get an impromptu ride along the Malecon by waving to the driver to stop and they will tell you how much it cost. Practice short phrases, out of courtesy and expediency like 'cuanto cuesta?; va a el pueblo o playa (ñame), lancha (Ferry Dock)?' You can also reserve a transport in advance for early morning ferry drop off or excursions to several beaches. Rental cars abound, consider renting a kayak to get to Sun Bay or Media Luna.
Vieques has beautiful beaches and has been ranked in several travel magazines-come For more than The Biobay experience. Patronales in July, Three Kings day parade and The Race For The cure are good local Events.
Guests enter through the carport which leads to the south deck entrance-passing the outdoor shower. Hot shower (water flows from the "on-faucet" heater- a standard used in Puerto Rico), there is an industrial fan, bath towels and bed linens in the room. The bed is full size. The tiled north balcony has a hammock and glider. The ferry schedule is affected by the height of the seas-Vieques Sound and Passage- and informs the captain's decision to delay departure, limit number of passengers, etc. Assistance with harvesting is greatly appreciated.
Dr. Mona is a marvelously warm, friendly, attentive, gregarious host. Her home was a lovely place from which to experience the beauty of Vieques. Even her dogs--a friendly clan of five ambassadors, each with distinctive, colorful personalities--were welcoming and helpful, both at the house, and when I saw them at the beach and in town. Two of them even escorted me home one day.
I had a great vacation on the island, and Mona's hospitality was a key component of that.
Dr. Mona was a great host in Esperanza. She showed us exactly where to go and was very personable and knowledgeable about the area. She was a lot of fun to stay with and was kind enough to share guava pastries with us on our last morning in Esperanza. Her dogs were great beach buddies and tour guides too. This is a great place to stay if you are laid back an animal lover or both.
Dr. Mona was so great! My boyfriend and I stayed with Mona over the valentine's holiday. She got up super early and made up some fresh amazing breakfast! It was such a great surprise. Along with that I left my favorite moccasins at her place in a rush to catch the first ferry and she is shipping them all the way back to Chicago for me! Her animals are precious. Mona made our trip memorable. Thank you!
We had a wonderful stay at Dr Mona's! Dr Mona made us feel very welcome. The room was nice and clean and the location was very good. It is close enough to walk to the beach, and restaurants with out a car.
Dr Mona was very helpful guiding us to the best beaches and all of the interesting places on the island.
We look forward to staying there again on our next visit!
Close to esperanza which is gorgeous, publicos bring you from the ferry to Mona's. Mona does give good tips / advices! She's a really nice woman. The room was ok.
Mona was incredibly nice enough to allow two stranded travelers who could not find a hotel, to stay with only a one hour notice. She allows for privacy yet at the same time is hospitable and friendly. She answers questions and gives you suggestions on where to go on the island. The room was comfortable and the area quiet. Mona gives clear instruction to what she expects and her house rules. Good vibes all around. Thank you.
Daughter's review: Staying with Mona was one of our highlights in Puerto Rico. I am traveling with my mom and 3 year toddler son, who can be a handful at times! Mona was gracious and accommodating, and a real pleasure to chat with! Loved listening to her stories and insight on Vieques. We stayed in the downstairs rooms, and there is also a studio upstairs. Her place has a really lovely vibe, and you can tell that she places a great deal of thought and care into her home. She has a garden, and welcomed us to pick the starfruit and avocado in season. She has several friendly dogs, which can bark and accompanied my mother to the panaderia in the mornings.
Some logistics: this place is a 10-15 minute walk from "downtown" Esperanza (the small avenue of restaurants) on a hill. Bakery and grocery store is a 4-5 min walk away. It costs $3 per person from the ferry terminal by publico. Mona (and her pets) are baby friendly, but the house (like most normal adult houses) is not baby proofed, so while I recommend staying here with small children, they still require supervision. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Mona's place is a charming, eclectic place. Easy going lady with a big heart. Mona, thank you for your passion and starfruit from your garden!
I am impressed with your worldly experiences and feel your mother's pride in your accomplishments. I was blessed to have three generations in my home, seeing your mother's joy and love in her eyes for you and your son was a special treat ;-) Thank you for visiting, it made missing my grandchildren a little less lonely. Elliott was just like my Ty, next time I'll have my kiss attack ready. hahahaha. Bendicion, Dr. Mona
The room and the house was clean and nice. Mona's hospitality is great. She is clear about the house rules and I had a great stay there. I thank her for letting us know about the local tours, stores, beaches, etc. As you can imagine, recommendations from a local person is invaluable. I recommend it.
As all of Dr Mona's other guests have raved, Dr Mona is amazing. Warm, comforting, knowledgeable. As my boyfriend explained, someone you'd want to be your aunt. Dr Mona wasn't feeling well when we arrived but still communicated every step of the way and went above and beyond to help us with anything. The neighborhoods streets are filled with friendly dogs, cats and wild horses (yep!) roaming the area. The house is an 8 minute walk to the main strip with bars/food etc and a 20 minute walk to the breathtaking beach. Which leads me to my favorite part - HER DOGS. This listing should seriously include "trip to the beach escorted by 5 wonderful dogs." Dr Mona said they'd escort us, but we didn't really think all 5 would - they did! It was the coolest thing. At one point 4 of the dogs ran off to play, but Midnight stayed back. It looked like he wanted to go play, but he had to take care of his humans :) After, we went back to the house, dropped of a tired Midnight and went to eat. And who walks up on us? The four other dogs!! Amazing. Like a movie. Our only upset - we wish we had more time to get to know Dr Mona and her pets. Thanks for the life long memories. Hope to see you again soon, Dr Mona.
Great stay in Vieques. Mona is most welcoming. The driver of the publico and others all know where to find her. Very helpful with beach and restaurant recommendations and flexible with our times on arrival and departure.
