Looking for a cabin with character? Welcome to Pine Cone! Ours is an awesome A-frame with old-school wood paneling, a wood-burning fireplace, and original retro décor – cozy and funky, with all the modern comforts of home. In the heart of Sunnyside, it’s just five blocks to brunch and our private beach.
Leave your city-slicker granite counter tops at home – we have what’s important: our Saturday Supper dessert cabinet contains an ice cream maker, sundae bar, fondue, and of course s’mores. (And s’meeces, the Pine Cone S’mores 3.0) Plus of course everything else you need to make yourself at home: fully equipped kitchen, laundry, etc. etc.
The basics & bonuses: 3 bedrooms sleep 15 people. Dogs welcome! Wifi, printer, and standard office supplies included for you workerbees. Shampoo, toothpaste, hair dryer basics provided (though ironing board and such fancy big-city accoutrements are not – this is Tahoe!). Deck, BBQ, beach blankets, board games, DVD player, dozens of DVDs, cookbook collection for your Saturday supper planning, beach books, a guitar, and more.
The beach: we'll give you a key to the private homeowners association beach, featuring volleyball, basketball, and horseshoe courts; green grass and shady benches; clean bathrooms (very important); weddings to crash all weekend long; and Tahoe’s finest skipping stones. (Forget how to skip rocks? You ARE in need of a getaway!)
The neighborhood: Sunnyside is hot for good reason! A few blocks from the docks, we’re the one spot on this side of the lake that’s walking distance from not one but two rockin’ brunch places. While removed from the mean streets (ha!) of Tahoe City, when you forget something at the grocery store we’re only 10 minutes down the road. South Lake has curling and all (message Colleen if you want to try), but it's Vegas compared to this: North Tahoe is casino-free pockets of quiet cabins from another era, with more dogs and kids littering the middle of the street than cars. Oh and it’s an easy 3.5hrs from SF, assuming you miss traffic and drive like we do.
The activities: you really plan more than brunch, beach & wine? Ambitious. Okay, fine: we’ve got the hook-up for that too. We’ll tell you where to rent a boat, find the good hikes, and hop the local watering holes. Look us up on the map and you’ll see: we’re close to biking, river rafting, sledding, skiing, and snowboarding (Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Homewood et al.), the Tahoe Rim Trail, and all that outdoorsy goodness. Plus when you get here, you’ll find our binder of local tips that could only be amassed by a family that’s been here 28 years.
Please note a 1-week minimum is required for Christmas and New Year's.
If you'd like to visit, please ensure you have a profile with picture and tell us a bit about the group that's coming and what you're hoping for in your stay.
It's a family neighborhood, so we ask for no noise on the deck after 10pm please. And of course: no smoking!
The only thing to note about this cabin is that the pictures don't do it justice! I got inside and was blown away with how nice and cozy everything seemed. The cabin is nice and warm inside and has plenty of beds for a large party. Everything was as advertised and my entire group had an excellent time bumming around the cabin. Take lake is just a 10 minute walk from the cabin and there are plenty of ski resorts in driving distance like Squaw Valley or Homewood. I really recommend this place for large party bonding.
Janet was very organized, with clear instructions and helpful with any questions we had. Our family stayed for a week over Christmas and it was a perfect place for a skiing holiday. There was plenty of room, great facilities, close to restaurants, but not touristy. We recommend this place highly.
Janet and Colleen are super nice. They gave us lots of information toward staying at Tahoe. We had a great time here. The house was awesome, it has everything we need. We love the movies and board games they provided. We had lot of fun here.
We had our family reunion at Pine Cone. Janet responded promptly to any questions that came up in advance, and there were no surprises after we arrived. We had everything we needed and everyone had a great time.
Great weekend! Our host essentially sent 2-3 emails: one was chock full of information that we needed and two were answers to our personal questions. Perfect. Kept us informed while staying out of our hair.
The house itself was all that we expected and more. It felt cozy even though there was much more space than we needed. Loved the porch where we barbecued each night, and had drinks as the sun set and the stars came out.
This is a great cabin! The hosts were wonderful and responded immediately when I had any questions. I was very happy! The neighborhood was really quiet and it was very easy to get to the private beach down the road. I would definitely stay here again!
This was a great place to stay for our first trip to Tahoe. It was exactly as it was described and the owners were super helpful in giving us directions to stores, attractions, even good hiking trails. The house was completely equipped with everything we needed from beach towels to a cooler.
We're a Bay Area-based family that's been in Tahoe for 28 years. Pine Cone was originally purchased as Colleen's college tuition... but we liked it too much and decided to sell other things to pay for college instead :) We rent Pine Cone to others when we're not using it in the summer and for ski leases, so that you can enjoy it too!
(The profile photo is siblings Kevin & Claire in the lake. We can tell you where to rent a boat so you can freeze your butt off too.)
