*** Our very first black bear sighting happened on April 27, 2014! Very exciting!! ***
Your accommodation is a large studio apartment on the lower level of our home. The apartment is clean, carpeted, and has lots of light. One of its best features is the beautiful wooded surroundings. Deer, squirrels, and birds are abundant. You may even see a fox or a raccoon! The apartment has its own private entrance, so you can come and go as you please with no worries. The apartment also has a shaded patio and off-street parking. Its furnishings include a king-sized bed, a twin bed, 40" TV with TiVo, Netflix, and CD player, a sofa, and an easy chair (Note: the twin bed was recently purchased, and therefore is not shown in the pictures). A fourth guest is welcome to sleep on the sofa. The bathroom is newly renovated with a pedestal sink and bamboo flooring. The apartment has a full kitchen, which includes a full-sized refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven. The apartment has wireless internet. A washer and dryer is available if needed. The apartment is located in a very quiet and safe area approximately 8 miles west of Charlottesville (It takes about 15 minutes to drive to downtown Charlottesville and the University of Virginia) and about twenty-five minutes away from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive/Shenandoah National Park. You might also enjoy exploring the numerous vineyards that are nearby. My family and I (two adults and one child) live in the upper part of the house. We do not smoke and have no pets.
Check out my guidebook (link is at the upper right of this page) to see some of my favorite area attractions.
Guests have access to off-street parking, a basketball goal, and a shared washer and dryer.
Interaction with Guests
I do my best to greet guests when they first arrive to welcome them (you) to Charlottesville and to show them around the apartment. Since some guests enjoy more interaction than others, I generally let our guests know that I welcome their conversation and questions, then leave further contact up to them. Whenever we have chance encounters, I always try to check with them to make sure they are comfortable in the apartment.
Our neighborhood is so full of nature. We have a mix of beautiful Virginia forests, rolling fields, vineyards, and horse farms. Every season is beautiful here. We are close to the cultural and historical attractions of Charlottesville, but just far enough out of the city to have true peace and quiet. In the summer when the leaves are on the trees, only one other home is visible from our house. In the winter, only three homes are (barely) visible. Ahhhh....
Regrettably, we have no public transportation here. Transport is by car or bicycle (cycling is a very popular sport here. You will see many cyclists when you visit). I guess you could also ride your horse (horses are a big deal in this area of Virginia), but keep in mind that we don't have a bed for your horse.
Other Things to Note
The apartment can be accessed by wheelchair via a smooth but slightly downhill sidewalk. The apartment has enough room to easily maneuver a wheelchair. The shower, however, is not a walk-in or roll-in shower.
No pets or indoor smoking, please.

Kim was an excellent host – we arrived a bit later than anticipated on Friday night, but she was there to greet us and was very generous and warm! The place was very large – you could definitely fit 4 people in the apartment comfortably. It was great for a weekend away from the city, but would also be a great week long retreat as she had a decent sized kitchen that was stocked with the essentials (oven, microwave, full fridge, toaster, pots & pans, plates & glasses, milk, butter, OJ, etc!).
Kim’s house is tucked away in the woods about 20 minutes from downtown Charlottesville and 35 minutes from Shenandoah National Park – this was the perfect location for us between restaurants/bars and the beautiful outdoors!
Kim gave us a warm welcome greeting us in the driveway (when it was raining!) and brought out a big umbrella while we're still in the car. The apt for renting was a walk out basement, and it was very clean and cozy feeling. My girlfriend and I were very relaxed during our stay, and had no issues whatsoever.
Would love to be back for more in the future!
My boyfriend and enjoyed a weekend stay at Kim's guest apartment. The apartment is located below the main house, but the entrance is at ground level and the whole place gets plenty of lot of natural sunlight. It's in quiet and nature-filled area but still a just a short drive to downtown--I'd definitely recommend for those looking to spend their days enjoying Charlottesville but return to somewhere more secluded. Kim also made booking and check-in very easy and kindly welcomed us when we arrived.
We had a lovely stay at the Forest Haven. Kim was kind enough to be flexible with our schedule and was there to greet us when we arrived. The place was as advertised - clean, quiet, and spacious. The house is in a beautiful wooded area, and was a short drive to presidential history, wineries, and other fun. Overall it was a great place to stay while visiting Charlottesville and wouldn't hesitate to return again - highly recommend!
Kim's apartment was quite lovely. It was clean, quiet, accessible and everything was as advertised. She was friendly and helpful while also being considerate of privacy. The wooded location was very serene and peaceful and the location of the location was excellent - as it was close to mountains, wineries, restaurants, shopping, and Charlottesville. We loved it!!!
