The Space

*** Our very first black bear sighting happened on April 27, 2014! Very exciting!! ***

Your accommodation is a large studio apartment on the lower level of our home. The apartment is clean, carpeted, and has lots of light. One of its best features is the beautiful wooded surroundings. Deer, squirrels, and birds are abundant. You may even see a fox or a raccoon! The apartment has its own private entrance, so you can come and go as you please with no worries. The apartment also has a shaded patio and off-street parking. Its furnishings include a king-sized bed, a twin bed, 27" TV with DishNetwork, a sofa, and an easy chair (Note: the twin bed was recently purchased, and therefore is not shown in the pictures). A fourth guest is welcome to sleep on the sofa. The bathroom is newly renovated with a pedestal sink and bamboo flooring. The apartment has a full kitchen, which includes a full-sized refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven. The apartment has wireless internet. A washer and dryer is available if needed. The apartment is located in a very quiet and safe area approximately 8 miles west of Charlottesville (It takes about 15 minutes to drive to downtown Charlottesville and the University of Virginia) and about twenty-five minutes away from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive/Shenandoah National Park. You might also enjoy exploring the numerous vineyards that are nearby. My family and I (two adults and one child) live in the upper part of the house. We do not smoke and have no pets.

Check out my guidebook (link is at the upper right of this page) to see some of my favorite area attractions.

Guest Access

Guests have access to off-street parking, a basketball goal, and a shared washer and dryer.

Interaction with Guests

I do my best to greet guests when they first arrive to welcome them (you) to Charlottesville and to show them around the apartment. Since some guests enjoy more interaction than others, I generally let our guests know that I welcome their conversation and questions, then leave further contact up to them. Whenever we have chance encounters, I always try to check with them to make sure they are comfortable in the apartment.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is so full of nature. We have a mix of beautiful Virginia forests, rolling fields, vineyards, and horse farms. Every season is beautiful here. We are close to the cultural and historical attractions of Charlottesville, but just far enough out of the city to have true peace and quiet. In the summer when the leaves are on the trees, only one other home is visible from our house. In the winter, only three homes are (barely) visible. Ahhhh....

Getting around

Regrettably, we have no public transportation here. Transport is by car or bicycle (cycling is a very popular sport here. You will see many cyclists when you visit). I guess you could also ride your horse (horses are a big deal in this area of Virginia), but keep in mind that we don't have a bed for your horse.

Other Things to Note

The apartment can be accessed by wheelchair via a smooth but slightly downhill sidewalk. The apartment has enough room to easily maneuver a wheelchair. The shower, however, is not a walk-in or roll-in shower.

  • We loved this home and it was perfect for our family during our stay in Charlottesville. Very quiet, serene and relaxing environment and the downstairs apartment was clean and well appointed. Kim is a gracious host she stocked the refrigerator with some breakfast items and snacks, loaned us a pan to bake a birthday cake and keeps a supply of "just in case items" in the bathroom (toothbrushes, contact solution, soap). The kids loved catching fireflies and even a frog off the back porch (released of course) and we honestly didn't want to leave. We were in C'ville for the Fourth of July and the local community fair and fireworks were awesome. No reservations about recommending Kim's home and if we're ever in the area again we'll return. Thank you!

  • KIm is a fantastic hostess! She greeted us and chatted about the area and tasty places to get food. The house is immaculate, very comfortable, and the woods are lovely. She generously supplied us with breakfast foods too. We want to return in the future!

  • The listing was precisely as described, and Kim was a wonderful host. She was communicative and punctual and offered us assistance when we first arrived and then only as we needed it. We were pleasantly surprised to find snacks and breakfast provided, and she was wonderfully kind in letting us borrow some DVDs when we felt like staying in one evening and relaxing with a bottle of wine from the local winery (just down the road!). We had a really lovely stay with easy access to all areas of Charlottesville by car within 15-20 minutes. The house is secluded and relaxing and on a quiet dirt road. A total retreat. Thanks, Kim!

  • We truly enjoyed our stay at the Forest Haven. It was everything we expected and more. Kim was wonderful and the space was very clean and comfortable. There were lots of extra touches that made it feel like home - like the breakfast items and local references that helped us explore the area. A storm took out the electricity for just a few minutes but Kim was right there offering us flashlights and making sure we were fine. It's a great location to get to C'ville and the mountains...we ended our days either on the Blue Ridge or Skyline Drive to watch the sunsets. We had an unexpected change in plans and Kim was very understanding and assisted us. Perfect first Airbnb experience! Thanks Kim!

  • Private, pleasant-- perfect! My wife and I stayed here for the third time, this time to attend graduation exercises at UVa. As usual, Kim was a marvelous host and had stocked the refrigerator with breakfast foods for us. Very clean very comfortable, and staying in the woods fifteen minutes out of town sure beats dealing with all the traffic hassles of staying at a hotel in Charlottesville. This will always be our first choice for C'ville stays!

  • It was a wonderful experience -- and yes, exactly as advertised. Kim was very gracious about the fact that we wound up arriving later than our intended arrival time (due to traffic issues). She was superb and everything you want in an AirBnB host.

The flat itself had ample space while still feeling cozy enough that my wife and I felt fine. As for location -- close enough to Skyline and Charlottesville for easy exploration qnd yet you still felt nestled, snug in the woods.

Kim even left some bagels, cheese, and juice for us.

Definitely a first-rate experience; I would recommend it highly, yes I would.

  • What a great place to stay at, incl. great price and location. The place was very clean, comfortable, and cozy. It was also nice that the place was one big space - better for family bonding. :) Thank you, Kim, for everything! We loved our time there. Wish we could have stayed longer!

  • Kim was incredibly accommodating and on short notice. The space was large, clean, and comfortable. There was even milk, juice, and bagels in the fridge for us! Easy and very pleasant experience.

  • The Forest Haven is an exceptional apartment! My husband and I spent two nights while doing a little house-shopping in Charlottesville. We could not have been more pleased with our accommodations! The room was immaculate and the location peaceful and convenient. Unfortunately, Kim was away during our stay, but I had the pleasure of talking with her prior to our arrival.
Zeke, Kim's husband, was welcoming and warm from the moment we pulled into the driveway.
We highly recommend staying at The Forest Haven!

  • I have been to The Forest Haven twice and could not have been happier with my experience both times! The serene location is perfect for a retreat into nature, and the apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable. Kim and Zeke are both welcoming, friendly and thoughtful hosts who gave great sightseeing recommendations. I would highly recommend a getaway at The Forest Haven any day! :)
