Description

The space

Welcome to our rustic home in this unique setting overlooking the break at Shipwreck's Beach. Great waves to surf when they're rolling in...great beaches, swimming and wind surfing when they're not. The desert meets the sea here so there's burros and sea turtles on the beach, and cactus, wildflowers and beautiful arroyos to explore. The neighborhood is a pleasant mix of Mexican ranchers & fishermen, and local gringos & surfers. The hut is about 10' x 12' with two twin beds which can be attached to make a king. We also have a separate deck (also overlooking the sea) where we can pitch a tent and provide all bedding for extra guests. So 'accommodates 4' is qualified. The room is a separate and private dwelling about 30' from the main house, where you'll find shower, coffee, WiMAX/WiFi all included in price, as well as parking. Hut has WiFi as well.

With a day or so advance notice breakfast/brunch is also available 'til noon, as well dinners. Note: The rental doesn't include cooking facilities. We will provide you with an ice-chest and a place to make snacks.

We hope to meet you soon Elena & León

The neighborhood

• San José's downtown is lovely, with adobe houses ,palm trees and jacaranda trees. Behind San Jose del Cabo's historic main plaza and church lies the ever-growing Art District, which in recent years has become a cultural center of Los Cabos with many art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, prints and jewelry by local, national and international contemporary artists.
• The Art Walk is a popular weekly event. Every Thursday evening between the months of November and June, the galleries welcome guests to enjoy an evening strolling the neighborhood, viewing art, sipping wine and dining at the many fine neighborhood restaurants. All who participate are open from 5pm-9pm and often certain galleries will have special events such as "artist in attendance" or openings of new work. It is a great night to come downtown and enjoy what our district has to offer.

• Cabo Pulmo bay is home to the only living hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. It is about an hour plus drive from Shipwrecks along the coast, with many fine secluded beaches along the way.
The reef lies 18 meters below the surface and consists of 6 main fingers of coral. There are smaller fingers and the coral growth on the rocky reefs provide a near perfect environment for a huge variety of colorful tropical fish. This area is also very attractive to various sea mammals, invertebrates, seabirds and marine plants. The nutrient-rich waters and enormous amounts of plankton create a food chain that makes Cabo Pulmo a paradise for creatures of the sea and divers alike. You can hire a guide boat to take you to various spots in the bay to snorkel or scuba dive. Or you can just strike out on your own.

Other things to note

• The Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific here, so from early November to April the water is mostly calm and warm. Waves here are generated by storms to the south of us which generally take place between April and October. While there are lulls between the swells, you can expect a choppier sea. The temperature also rises. Whereas the climate is temperate most of the time (most days lovely beach weather), it is quite hot here from August thru October. And this is the season for tropical storms and hurricanes. Worth the discomfort for surfers, but not the best season for most to visit.

House Rules
No parties or events

• Please note that part of living in a desert means that water here is extra precious... we therefore try to be extra careful how we use it. This means that showers need to be kept on the short side and we have no plumbed toilet but instead use a well kept compost toilet.

* If you do bring along a pet please keep in mind that coyotes and bobcats also call this please be of the dangers before allowing smaller pets to roam the monte unsupervised.

A perfect private sanctuary nestled on a hill between the desert and and the blue ocean surf. We watched whales and rays play in the Sea while swaying in a shaded hammock at the palapa. Leon and Elena were perfect hosts, providing both great company and respectful privacy at all times. Elena's cooking is delicious! We chose not to rent a car and spent our week exploring the beach and the desert by foot. It was a an experience we'll never forget and one we can't stop recommending to our friends :)

All the 5 star reviews do not do Shipwrecks justice. This place is amazing. Beautiful views of the ocean, nature, great food, great company. There are awesome day trips you can take-Cabo Pulmo, into town for farmers market or or a margarita. Elena, Leon and and Beto are great hosts. I would highly recommend to stay here.

This was my first visit to stay with Elena and Leon and Betto and it will not be my last! It was the first trip I had had with my sister, just us alone, for years. The palapa and the sound of the surf below at Shipwreck's Break envelopes you from the first moment you arrive. It is a place to soothe your soul from hecticness and city life. The tranquillity and silence of the desert, the spectacular starry nights, the ever present surf and the cool night breeze blowing over you in your bed. Awakening to the dawn. Morning swims. Hot sun deliciously warming you down to your bones. Such a sensual place. Elena's cooking is sooooo good and she treated us with pizza the last night! Great conversations with Elena, Leon and Betto. I cannot recommend this place more. One of the magic places on our planet. Gracias por todo!!

I can't tell you how fabulous the location is. It is was simply wonderful to wake up in this location and to go to sleep in this location. Everything about the ocean and location made the trip. Leon and Elena have a slice of heaven here and I will be forever grateful to have spent time here with my 19 year old. It is forever etched in our timeline of time <3

Our stay at Leon Y Elena's was a perfect, relaxing weekend getaway (of course we wish we could have stayed for a week or longer!). From the opening of the Palapa where you sleep you have an amazing view of the ocean for picture perfect pink sunrises in the morning. We saw whales from the porch (in front of the opening of the Palapa) at least 5 times a day or more! Although Elena said they are seen less frequently after March. It rained the first night we were in the Palapa and we were amazed that no water got inside. The Palapa has an open front, great for viewing the lightning storm on the ocean from your bed. We don't surf, but there were a few surfers here over the weekend, some who camp on the beach. Everyone in the area was friendly and welcoming. We walked a quick 10 minutes down the beach from the Palapa and found a great, secluded (although the whole beach is secluded in comparison to Cabo San Lucas, or half of Cabo San Lucas) place to swim and lay on the sand. Elena offered us an umbrella to take with us on the beach, and I should have taken it! Take the umbrella! If you don’t, it’s not a big deal but I wish I would have had it. We brought the snorkel masks Elena let us borrow, and we enjoyed long swims in the ocean. The water was, refreshing, and we saw a few fish in the area, and of course, more whales. We rented a car and it was very easy & inexpensive to get around. We spent a day in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo. It a beautiful hour and a half drive along the coast. Elena's meals are AMAZING! She made us fresh brick oven pizza - some with smoked marlin, some with goat cheese and vegetables. We had pan seared fish, and pesto pasta with filet, always served with salad and fresh bread. Breakfasts were equally as amazing. You don't want to stay here and not eat Elena's food. I definitely recommend staying here if you are up for a unique experience in a beautiful place. Thank you Leon y Elena! We hope to return soon.
