About This Listing
Welcome to our rustic home in this unique setting overlooking the break at Shipwreck's Beach. Great waves to surf when they're rolling in...great beaches, swimming and wind surfing when they're not. The desert meets the sea here so there's burros and sea turtles on the beach, and cactus, wildflowers and beautiful arroyos to explore. The neighborhood is a pleasant mix of Mexican ranchers & fishermen, and local gringos & surfers. The casita is about 10' x 12' with two twin beds which can be attached to make a king. We can also provide you with another cot and/or pitch you an extra tent if you're traveling with a larger group. The room is a separate and private dwelling about 30' from the main house, where you'll find shower, coffee, WiMAX/WiFi all included in price, as well as parking.
With a day or so advance notice breakfast is also available 'til noon, as well as lunches and and/or dinners. We hope to meet you soon! Elena & León
• 900 miles South of the border.
• 200 miles West of Mexico City.
• 30 miles NE of Cabo San Lucas.
• 12 miles to nearest town / airport.
• 100 steps to sand and sea...
• Please note that part of living in a desert means that water here is extra precious... we therefore try to be extra careful how we use it. This means that showers need to be kept on the short side and we have no plumbed toilet but instead use a well kept dry/outhouse type of toilet.
* If you do bring along a pet please keep in mind that coyotes and bobcats also call this home...so please be of the dangers before allowing smaller pets to roam the monte unsupervised.
My husband and I loved our stay here! Elena and Leon are welcoming and so interesting to talk with. Elena's cooking is fantastic and Leon's Mezcal margaritas were refreshing... and packed a punch. There is nothing like sleeping in an open air palapa with views of the beach and sea breezes keeping us cool. They have spent more than 25 years here putting hard work and craftsmanship into the details that make this place comfortable and unique. It's a one of a kind experience.
This is an incredible place, we loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean!
Leon and Elena are quite friendly and made us feel comfortable.
Be prepared to live on the edge!
Loved, absolutely loved my stay. It is exactly as it looks like except that you really don't get just how beautiful the view is until you are swinging in your hammock with a corona in your hand watching whales breach that you really get it! I miss Elena and Leon and their cats and their rancho dogs so much it hurts. They are my family now and I hope they feel the same about me! If you are looking for a remote, beach experience then this is the place for you. And Elena is an amazing cook - so take advantage of the offer because the nearest restaurant is miles away. There is no doubt that you are not going to find this kind of a place or this kind of experience many other places in the world. I almost don't want to write this because I don't want it to get too popular!!!! Grace Jordan
This is a very special place. My husband and I had a wonderful time. We rented a sedan and drove about 10 mi/hr for 1.5 hours on the dirt road from San Jose del Cabo. If you want to explore the area (we also drove 2 hours north to Cabo Pulmo) it is worthwhile to rent a truck.
But, if you decide to spend all your time at the palapa and Shipwreck's beach you won't feel bored. The beach is in my top three in the world and there are some nice walks that you can take down a nearby arroyo (very interesting flora) or along the road. In Feb. we saw tens of whales just off the coast daily.
There are $5M mansions about 1 mi away and we never once thought that we would want to stay there instead of the palapa. We ate breakfast and dinner with Elena (and a few visiting friends) every day. She is an excellent cook! We brought snacks from town but were very happy to have warm healthy meals twice a day.
Leon y Elena's place is a beautiful study in sustainable living. It is glamping, and actually very luxurious in its own way with the great meals, crafstman architecture, outstanding location, and good company. We miss it already.
Waking to the sound of the surf, two friendly dogs, and the sky ablaze with color was extraordinary. Evening dinners and conversations stimulating. Leon and Elena, as well as their other guests, were open and flexible. This is a remote, special place hopefully never overrun with skyscraper developments--a special place on earth.
After spending a few weeks in Baja, traveling all around the east and west capes, I have to agree with another reviewer- only once you leave do you know what you had! We woke up most mornings with whales in our eye line and Cactus Wrens swooping around in all directions. We also chose to partake in the meal offering that Elena has, and for the most part we really loved it. We both felt that it would have been somewhat difficult to make our own meals and chosen not to pay extra for the breakfast and dinners, in such an open and shared kitchen with very specific guidelines for usage.
When you're staying with Elena and Leon, you become part of their family and that is an important part of this listing to understand. Eating meals with them, spending time in the larger shared space, and seeing them in what is a very open, community property.
I would only stay here if you're prepared and ready to experience sleeping outside, using a composting toilet and spending almost all of your days in open air spaces, this is Baja after all!
Overall I definitely recommend this listing, it's one of the best places you can stay in BCS.
I recommend hiking up the arroyo behind their house, driving up to Cabo Pulmo for either a snorkel or a hike up the big mountain adjacent to the beach. If you want to feel like you're in Northern California stop at Flora Farm, or hit the farmers market in San Jose on Saturdays to get organic produce. Shipwrecks Beach is great for swimming most days, other than that it's hard to find a swimmable beach on both capes.
