About This Listing
This one bedroom ocean-view apartment has a queen size bed, kitchen, bath, Wifi, TV, phone, parking, pool and jacuzzi, in a gracious, garden setting. It's 'Old Malibu', gentle and relaxed with a country feel. In a pinch, a twin bed may be added!
This one bedroom haven is located in the gentle hills over-looking Zuma Beach. The lovely patio overlooks a spectacular ocean view. The pool and water-falling jacuzzi are in a garden with an ocean view. The new king-size bed is most comfortable. All is nestled in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood with fruit trees and gardens, and patios, inside with kitchen, bath, parking, shared pool/jacuzzi, Wifi, TV and a land-line phone, a 3 minute drive to Zuma beach, two markets each 5 minutes away, with gas, post office, restaurants, bank, bus, also 20 minutes from the 101 freeway with its access to Hollywood, Universal Studios, Beverly Hills and museums, 25 minutes to Santa Monica/Venice.
I have lived here since '77 nourished by the peace, beauty and ocean hillside climate of 'old Malibu'. Once in a while horses walk down the street toward a mountain trail. There are no sidewalks or street lamps. Yucca bloom on the hillside and you can hear the ocean waves at night.
We have recently insulated and dry-walled the ceiling to provide extra warmth for the coming fall and winter; the photos need updating as they are showing the old rafters. The big beautiful crossbeams still give it a wood feeling but it is a little less rustic, and has a little more finished feel. We added a bathroom door! The feel is casual, country-ish and relaxed with blooming jasmine, loquat and mulberry trees Once in a while coyotes howl up on the hillside. With binoculars, you can even sometimes see a whale's spout! For a great magazine article on the cottage on this property see Laura Hobbs' article:
The pool is sometimes shared with two other vacation rentals and several of us living in the main house. but all units have their own space and there is a private feel on the whole.
Interaction with Guests
The wide-open ocean view on this gentle, gardened hillside and quiet neighborhood is so peaceful and welcoming!
Car is best!
There is a stairway and a path near the pool lit at night. We love the quiet and laid-back atmosphere and are comfortable with surfboards and kayaks, etc.
The host was extremely accommodating. The place was amazing. It was wonderfully secluded and had an great view of the ocean.
We loved our stay here! Anndrea was so welcoming and attentive to any and all of needs. The pictures describe the place fairly well, however you'll be in awe once you actually arrive. Great place right near the beach with all the necessary amenities for a brief stay.
The address is easy to find. Anndrea is a gracious hostess and made us feel welcome and clearly explained how everything worked, including the hot tub and pool.
The room is spacious and fully serviced with kitchen and bathroom. The views and elevation are good, and the area is quiet at night.
While we appreciate that market forces in Malibu in the high season dictate what we paid, we don't feel the accommodation was value for money given the rustic nature of the property and the room itself. The photos gild the lily somewhat.
We relied upon previous reviews to choose this accommodation. Either we are the wrong demographic, or the previous reviews are less than candid.
My wife and I had a lovely stay at this Malibu property. We only wish it would have been longer. The room was private, the property had a very relaxing feel. We loved the pool and spa, and the temperature in Malibu is always just right. Anndrea was very helpful showing us around and all the ins and outs of the property. All in all, a great stay.
Anndrea's place was fantastic. Would absolutely stay here again!
I hesitate to leave a glowing review just because I want the space to be available whenever we want to get away! Truth is, this retreat is less than an hour from mid-city LA in weekend beach traffic, but feels a world away. The property is large and private, even if other guests are staying. I imagine coming back here with a group and renting the entire space would be great. I saw a grill next to the pool that would be a great party accessory. The view of Zuma beach is fantastic. The hot tub was a perfect temperature in the foggy morning. And don't miss the tree swing at the top of the stairs.
Anndrea was a wonderful hostess. Tending to the grounds or the other guest house, she was available, but never hovering. She welcomed us at the (somewhat hidden & pretty steep) driveway, offered to help us with our bags and gave us a brief tour of the grounds including the operation of the spa/pool as she led us to our suite. Her recommendations on dining were welcomed and her demeanor was as relaxing as the distant waves on the shore. It's clear that she loves this property and enjoys sharing it with visitors.
The suite itself was comfortable for the two of us over the weekend. We made breakfast in the kitchen and ate out on the patio. Curled up on the lounger we watched some Netflix at night. With the cool breeze blowing in I understand why the ceiling was insulated and dry-walled, but close the window and the small space heater took care of any chills. If I were to critique anything, I would suggest that if you have troubles with stairs you might investigate the pool house unit. This one is at the top of the hill, with a winding timber staircase leading to the top. It was easy to navigate, but the largest step up wound up being from the floor of the bathroom into the bath/shower which is raised off the floor by a decent amount. It posed no problem for either of us, but I couldn't imagine my mother trying to deal with it.
All in all, this is a great getaway that I'd highly recommend if you want to feel a little detached, surrounded by nature with some great amenities.
