The space

A peaceful retreat to call your own, nestled in the lush hardwood forest of Eastern Kentucky. This handcrafted open concept cottage sits on 250 acres overlooking a creek, surrounded by miles of hiking and nature trails available for your enjoyment.

As you drive up the private lane to Creekside Cottage your cares just melt away. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The sights and sounds of nature surround you and you can choose what to do… sit on the deck and take it all in, write your next novel, cook a gourmet meal, bird watch, hike, mountain bike, or star gaze. While you are here, you may also want to visit some of the unique natural areas and parks, museums, and antique shops nearby. Please refer to the Guidebook for area attractions.

From the cottage you have complete privacy and cannot see our home, which is an easy quarter mile walk down the lane if you need us. Cell service in the “holler” is spotty to nonexistent, for this reason we provide a landline and wifi for your use.

The cottage was hand-built and has many custom details that make it feel like home. The space is handicap accessible, with an open concept kitchen, dining and living area and a roll-in shower, with wide doors to the bathroom and bedrooms. Please note, at this time there is not a ramp onto the deck.

The wrap around deck is spectacular, with 600 square feet of outdoor living space, including Adirondack chairs, grill, and cozy screened-in porch which is perfect for reading a book and listening to the night sounds.

You are welcome to enjoy the nature trails and old logging roads on the property.

When enjoying the cottage we will assist you in any way we can, otherwise we will honor your privacy. If we are available, we would be happy to give you a tour of the wood working shop and other projects on the farm, such as our organic garden and on-going hardwood timber stand improvements. You can even help us if you'd like! We are happy to show you our residence as well as the workshop and surrounding buildings, however, we ask that you work out a time to do this with us. This is for your safety.

Our property is in a rural setting in the Appalachian foothills of Eastern Kentucky. We are located 3 miles from the quaint town of Vanceburg where you can find a grocery, pharmacy, gas station, cafe and carry-out. Note, we would suggest BYOB if you are looking for craft beer or good wine.

You will need a car as there is no public transportation available. There are many wonderful places to visit in the area, please refer to the Guidebook for additional information.

This is a great place if you are looking for a secluded place in the woods to recharge! It was like a refreshing retreat. The nature all around is phenomenal and it really served as a disconnect from (URL HIDDEN) phones, tv, traffic. I would definitely return and recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet get-away.

Laurie and Phil were great hosts. They were there when we needed anything but otherwise stayed out of the way so we felt like the place was our own. The creek out back was perfect for our 4-year-old to go explore and we enjoyed sitting on the porch and appreciating the tranquility. The cabin is well built and maintained so our stay was very comfortable.

Our stay at the cottage was perfect! We were there with our almost 2 year old and a 4 month old and everybody enjoyed it. We had space for the baby's bed in our room, which was nice, and the cottage had everything we needed. We were especially looking for somewhere secluded and somewhere the toddler could be outside as much as he wanted, and this was it! It's a beautiful place and Phil and Laurie are delightful hosts.

We have frequented the area for years (more than 20) and if you are looking for a first class place in the area, this is IT! PERFECT and easy to follow directions (in this area of the world that is a BIG plus), pleasant and attentive host, and the cottage itself is absolutely beautiful. For the location, it has EVERYTHING, including wi-fi. We have long accepted nearly non-existent cell service in the area and shaky to unusable satellite services, so having great wi-fi is a tremendous plus. The unit itself shows true creativity and pride of ownership and the pictures and description are spot on. If the unit is open, would highly recommend booking it if you are staying in the area.

Laurie and Phil are wonderful, gracious hosts and Creekside Cottage couldn't have been a more perfect place to relax and unwind for the weekend. Thanks for everything. We hope to return.

Vanceburg, Kentucky 15 April 2017. Seasons’ greetings. Just outside Vanceburg, a ten-minute drive from downtown is a single-car private road path climb up past a gate and over a meandering creek to the isolated forest enclave of Griffen Hollow, 250 heavily wooded acres within the Appalachian foothills of Northeastern Kentucky. Phil and Laurie are into their fourth decade of well tending to the serious responsibilities of keeping up such a spread that includes Creekside Cottage, a clean well kept single story high ceiling open-space designed house really, naturally lit with huge windows allowing for sunlight and views of the woods with a wide wrap-around porch deck including a roofed and screened outdoor room off the bedroom. The detailed solid hardwood kitchen cabinetry, wooden floors and other craftsmanship detailing are of the first order. Open the front door and hear the rush of water from a natural waterfall down a facing wooden hillside, and the other side of the house is the sound of the creek flowing over rocks with Mockingbirds and songbirds singing their hearts out, seemingly nonstop in this private forest preserve. –Art’s nature resplendent in nature’s art. You may be inspired to write as I have done here. If not, to well recall what you read in school: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” ― Henry David Thoreau, Walden. I look forward to staying again at lovely Creekside Cottage and its original splendid setting with its learned, accommodating and most hospitable hosts and their old Kentucky home. Life is good. Happy Easter!

We enjoyed staying at Laurie & Phil's place. Our boys liked playing in the creek and the secluded nature of the location was nice for getting away from the city. If you like bird-watching, this is a great spot to do it! The hosts were quite hospitable.

Laurie & Phil User ProfileLaurie & Phil is a superhost.

Phil pitched a tent on the land and started building his home with reclaimed materials. He didn't know how long he was going to stay, and that was 35 years ago. Laurie packed up her belongings in Colorado Springs and drove across country to join Phil in the holler about eight years ago. The two have never looked back. We know we live in a paradise and we love sharing it.

We are dreamers, creators and travelers. We enjoy organic gardening, woodworking, and caring for the land. We have been doing timber stand improvement projects for many years in collaboration with Natural Resources Conservation Services, United States Department of Agriculture, and the Kentucky Division of Forestry. In 2016 we will do the largest project to date, 29 acres. If you are interested, we would love to show you what we are up to!
