Encircled by coconut trees and rice fields, Secret Garden Ubud is where people go to experience the active culture life in Ubud, even shop till you drop while still enjoying its doubtlessly excellent characteristics of a peaceful place surrounded by the serenity of nature to rejuvenate oneself.
The environmentally friendly concept is represented by unique front wall design in the living area and semi open bathroom to the lush trees at the back part. This allows air to circulate freely and provides a cool breeze all the time that create a nice place to live which seamlessly gives way to the natural surroundings.
Our mezzanine style building provides sufficient space for couple, yet ample room for privacy. A big open window from the bedroom upstairs permits the view to the lush trees below. Watching the sky changes color first thing in the morning will be an unforgettable experience.
This home is a lovely retreat from the streets of Ubud. Well located a short ride away from town and shops etc the house provided us with a wonderful sanctuary to relax and unwind in. The place was well equipped and comfy, and we will come back and stay again.
TLDR; This place is really nice. Good location that is not in the hustle and bustle of Ubud but not too far to justify taking taxis to and from. It is big enough for 2 people and possibly more. The kitchen is quite handy, the bed is comfortable and the view out of the window is quite nice. You dont need an alarm because at 4am, Steve the Cock will wake you up with ease. Remember, semi open plan means noises amplify.
But here's the thing: it a semi-open studio which means lots of visitors will show up throughout the day. I am talking abut bugs, insects and geckos. Whilst it took me a day or 2 to get used to that, I was fine with it. Cover up when you go to sleep and you are fine.
BUT, 2 nights before I checked out I woke up middle of the night to a fist size spider crawling on my chest. Now, this is not a small adorable spider, this is FIST SIZE fuzzy looking black thing. I ended up spending the night snoozing on and off on the couch downstairs until Maria put me in a different room which was good.
Aside from that, the place is lovely and so are Maria, Sri and Gede. The place was clean and cleaned up every day. I asked for my laundry to be done which they arranged for. I had arranged with Maria for airport pickup but driver never showed up, was not a big deal as I grabbed one form the airport and was same price.
The walk from the house to the main road is about 10 minutes. Nice walk and fairly ok. At night, it is a bit scary if you are alone as some dogs (and there is loads of them) will bark at you for no reason. They are mostly harmless but still, kinda scary.
Bottom line is: book if you are ok with having to deal with the occasional spider, this is the best place your money can buy (or rent really).
Experience with host was satisfactory. Listing described the place correctly. The neighborhood was quiet and very good location.
Secret Garden suited us exactly. We weren't looking for a lot of interaction with owners or other guests. We wanted a location close to center of Ubud yet quiet, with enough room that we weren't stuck in one little room for a week. The loft was exactly the right space for us, very nice, with small useful kitchen, convenient 1 1/2 baths, consistent hot shower, nice air circulation, basically very comfortable.
Really glad that you like the place and suited all your need. I'm still travelling at the moment, and just got a proper internet connection to write back to you. Sorry for not being able to meet and greet you in person. Thank you very much for your input and looking forward to host you again. All the best.
Secret Garden is a lovely private hideaway that is far enough from the crowds to be quiet, but close enough to be within easy walking distance.
Maria and the housekeeper, Sri, were incredibly accommodating and went out of their way to help with any issues that we had.
The kitchen and facilities were very simple and suitable for only the most basic of meals. There's also no toaster - although Maria kindly lent us hers. Internet was patchy, but there are a couple of different connection options (USB modem or wireless) and connectivity issues were similar to the rest of Bali.
All in all a great stay. Thank you!
My fiance and I stayed here for 5 nights and we had an incredible experience. The loft is extremely ventilated with air flowing right through, so it is very cool at night. There is no air-conditioning, because there is no need for one. The downside is that it can get a little buggy at times; but there is a mosquito net around the bed, so it's really not a big deal. The sounds of nature put us to sleep like babies. The loft was cosy; it felt like home for us.
The road, Jalan Sriwedari, where the loft is located along, has nice food places like Seniman Coffee Studio, Dapur Bunda, and Warung Schnitzel. The loft is also a leisurely walk away (about 10-15min) from the main road in Ubud (Jalan Raya Ubud), where there are many shops and restaurants.
Sri, the housekeeper, is a really nice local lady who kept the loft impeccably clean daily. She was very accommodating, even when we knocked on her door at 3am when the electricity went out (not an issue with the loft, but rather the overall supply around the area - it came back in 10min so no worries there). Also, Secret Garden uses a bioseptic tank, so be mindful not to throw toilet paper into the toilet bowl. We didn't know this on the first day and I bet we gave Sri a lot of trouble. Sorry Sri!
Maria also helped us arrange for airport transfer and the pick-ups went smoothly.
We met Maria on our last day there and she gave us the biggest wave before we left!
We'll definitely return when we visit Ubud again. Thanks for your hospitality :)
Lovely private rooms north of Ubud! Maria was very nice and helpful. I wasn't expecting a little mini bar (pay your way) but I made good use of it (nice beer, mmm).
The walls were a little bit thin as I could hear the neighbours TV on (at least not late).
Actually quite a nice little spot that I would recommend to people who are self sufficient and don't rely on being pampered. Thanks maria!
