A little history of Elysian Fields Avenue:
Elysian Fields Avenue is a broad, straight avenue in New Orleans that courses south to north from the Lower Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain, a distance of approximately 5 miles (8.0 km). The thoroughfare takes its name from the Avenue des Champs Elysées, an elegant, 1.2-mile-long promenade that sweeps from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. Elysian Fields Avenue intersects with Interstate 610, Interstate 10, and U.S. Highway 90, Gentilly Boulevard passing by Brother Martin High School. The avenue was home to the famous "Smokey Mary" railroad line until the 1950's and served as the primary setting for Tennessee Williams' famous work, "A Streetcar Named Desire".
The house is located in the Gentilly/Dillard neighborhood which is a middle class area with a fair mixture of resident homeowners, rental properties, two universities and some commercial properties nearby. The house is really not within walking distance to any of the city's main attractions but it is very centrally located and close to everything (no more than a 15 minute ride (2-4 miles) will get you anywhere in town). It's a great nearby retreat after a good long day of beating the streets of the French Quarter!
There is a public bus line that runs directly up Elysian Fields to the French Quarter and downtown areas. It is very reliable and inexpensive. The nearest bus stop is on the next block adjacent to the house. Taxis are also relatively inexpensive and usually easy to come by (although there can be excessive waits for cabs during the various holidays throughout the year). There is also ample off street parking in the driveway if you happen to rent or bring your car, but be aware that parking in the French Quarter and downtown areas can be difficult or expensive.
Other Things to Note
We strive to always be good neighbors. We maintain the house to a very high standard and we expect all guests to be courteous, considerate and respectful of the neighbors at all times.
Basically, normal manners apply - please enjoy yourself and make yourself at home, which means treat the place the way you would want your home treated.
Special considerations regarding the pool:
This should all be common sense but just in case... Swim at your own risk. The pool is 2.5 feet deep on the shallow end and goes to 6 feet deep on the other end. There is a bench that runs along the entire length of the right side of the pool. The pool is not artificially heated as it's hot or warm most of the year in New Orleans but unless you're used to swimming in water less than 75 degrees (Fahrenheit) then the pool is typically not comfortable from October to March - we generally don't s(website hidden)ring that part of the year. Children and adolescents (minors - 17 years old and younger) must be supervised at all times while swimming, playing or hanging out in or near the pool. Never swim alone. Please do not bring anything made of glass/crystal in or near the pool - if something like that gets broken and pieces get in to the pool, it is impossible to see them and then somebody will get cut and the fun's over at that point.
Please also be mindful of tracking water into the house (or if you do please promptly dry it up) as the older original woods floors are not as water resistant as wood flooring used today (in newer homes). The pool is sanitized using a salt water chlorinator and is on an automatic timer so you won't have to worry about tampering with it. Having access to a pool is truly priceless during the summer months in New Orleans - we hope you safely enjoy!
THANK YOU for the GOOD TIMES!!!!
Very nice house, loved the decor, with easy access to everything we wanted to visit. Josh and Sam were good hosts.
Really enjoyed our stay at Josh and Sam's house. The place was exactly as described. Clean and nice. Location was great as well. Thanks a bunch!
We enjoyed our stay and found the home to be exactly as described. Although the weather was too cool to enjoy the pool, the back yard was lovely. Josh and Sam have done a great job landscaping. We also enjoyed drinking our coffee in the bar area, taking in the view of the palm trees and the maple, in the morning. We found the location to be convenient if you don't want to be in the middle of everything. It was a very short drive straight down Elysian Fields to the French Quarter. The main drawback was the road noise. Although we got used to it in a couple of days, the front bedroom might be too noisy for some.
The place was amazing, and beautifully set up. Josh was great! The internet wasn't working, so Josh came over, stayed for an hour, until it was up and running. Great host!
Young professional couple living and working in New Orleans. We enjoy most everything the city has to offer - especially the music/jazz - and we hope you do too! We look forward to you staying at our beautiful home on Elysian Fields!
