Think traveling with kids means sacrificing gorgeous, architecturally inspiring accommodations?

Think again. Your kids will feel like woodland creatures—and you’ll feel like a travel-planning wizard—when your family settles into our mid-century modern cabin, tucked into a dense stand of redwoods beside the Russian River in Guerneville. (One ancient redwood has been presiding over our part of the forest for over a thousand years!)

A true mid-century modern gem, Lucky Bend Lookout was architect-designed and constructed in 1966, and is kid-friendly down to the childproofed details. It’s environmentally friendly, too—during a recent remodel, we took care to increase thermal performance by 400 percent (that includes heated floors!) and used only sustainable building materials and native plants. Protecting nature—which is so gorgeously on display here—is a priority for us.

In true mid-century modern tradition, the Lucky Bend Lookout’s open floor plan, elevated treehouse-style deck, enormous windows, and warm redwood walls and ceilings merge indoor and outdoor spaces.

Have you ever vacationed somewhere that’s brimming with natural beauty and felt guilty for just wanting to relax inside with a good book? Here, that’s no dilemma.

Watch ospreys soar among the redwoods from the couch in the living area, decorated with clean lines and whimsical fabrics. Or sauté fresh vegetables from the Guerneville Farmers Market in our fully stocked kitchen as you watch your kids play outside on the deck.

Then, present your handiwork to your hungry family at the sleek dining table—which has room for 10—and watch the Russian River drifting by in the fading light of evening while the adults sip our region’s famous wines. Or you can get even closer to nature and feast at the eight-person outdoor dining table on the spacious deck among the trees.

After dinner, get cozy in the living room and watch the stars reflect their sparkle on the river as you browse Netflix, HuluPlus, or Pandora Radio on our 47-inch flat screen TV. The couch doubles as a pull-out bed.

For the kids, we keep our cabin clear of breakable knickknacks and stocked with all the gear you need. A Pack ‘n Play, high chair, step stool, potty-chair, toddler bed rail, baby swing, and stroller keep the little ones safe. Plus, we supply a few extra goodies to keep them happy, like a water table, a swing set under the deck, and some inside toys.

One bedroom features a reading nook and a sturdy set of bunk beds for a fun, summer-camp setup, except much comfier—we use memory foam mattresses on all of our beds. And your kids’ imaginations will run wild with the magical redwood grove in view just outside their window.

Two adult bedrooms, with queen-sized beds and mid-century modern details like shag carpeting and low-profile beds, invite you to sink in for the night. A view of the redwoods will greet you in the morning.

Downtown Guerneville is only a mile from the Lucky Bend Lookout. We are located 10 minutes by car from the nearest winery and 15 to 20 minutes from dozens more. There’s even a few kid-friendly wineries in the area! A sandy beach along the Russian River is a 10-minute walk from the property, or hop in the car and head 20 minutes to the Sonoma Coast to surf, explore tide pools, and spot harbor seals sunning themselves. Lucky Bend Lookout comes with beach chairs, an umbrella, beach toys, a cooler, a picnic basket, and a cruiser bike.

Our calendar fills fast—the time to book your mid-century modern oasis is today!

  • Sarah was wonderful! She answered all of my questions quickly, and I had a lot! The home was beautiful. We couldn't have asked for anything better. It was wonderful to sit around the big kitchen table together for a meal or use the bbq outside and enjoy the river view. I will definitely come here again!

  • We absolutely loved this house! Thank you so much for being so accommodating! A group of us stayed for barrel tasting weekend and it was the perfect house for a group of friends. the patio/balcony is incredible, so peaceful and calming. Exactly what we needed. the heater floors.. wow! we were all actually too hot and had to turn them off! the only slight downfall was the walls were paper thin and you could hear everything... so those that wanted to sleep in didn't really get to. the couch pulls out into a bed but we were so tired we just slept as is. but the kitchen was fully stocked with all that we could have possibly needed to cook dinner. the large family style table was perfect for game night and everyone could sit at the table. parking was not a problem for us. the garage was a great size for the suv and full size car to park. Thank you again, we absolutely can't wait to come back!

  • Wonderful cabin set within the redwoods along the Russian River. It was a perfect base for 5 of us to hike, eat, and experience the beautiful surrounding landscape. The house is cozy, well-equipped and complete with a relaxing deck. We will return!

  • Sarah's home in Guerneville is great and so relaxing! It seems more interesting architecturally than other houses on the river, and has a wonderful deck where we ate breakfast -- even in the cold -- and slept with pads and bags. So cozy!

  • My family and I had a great stay in the house! Everything was clean, well stocked and well labeled. We visited in December and the nights were cold, but the heated floors kept the house cozy. The location was perfect - close to town, the redwoods, coast and vineyards. Not to mention, it's right on the Russian River! Sarah was a great host and easy to get in touch with.

    I highly recommend!

  • We stayed here for 2 nights for a family reunion and we had a wonderful time at this charming and beautiful place. The house is very well equipped with everything you need for cooking, linen, boardgames. We grilled outside, went wine tasting ( the place is only a few minutes away from great wineries), watched movies (there is netflix access), and went for walks in the area surrounded by beautiful redwoods. We definitely recommend this place!! Thanks Sarah.

  • The house was perfect for a base to the wineries. It took a little while to heat up at first, but it was great! We spent a lot of time relaxing and begging out. We even got a visit from a fox!

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here on the Russian River. The deck overlooking the river is amazing, incredibly well stocked (and well labeled) kitchen, and super comfortable and cozy living room. It's a great place.

  • The Lucky Bend Lookout gave our group a serene and relaxing setting to catch up and recharge. Sarah and Regan are extremely professional, which is evidenced by the Lucky Bend Lookout website and their attention to detail. I had asked for a recommendation for a wine tour, and Sarah referred me to a fantastic wine tour operator! The cabin-style home is well-appointed; the living room/den area in particular was perfect for relaxing, catching up over lots of wine, and watching movies. During our visit we had a question about the coffee maker and we were contacted ASAP. Thank you Sarah!

  • What a great find! My girlfriends and I just finished a wonderful Fall weekend at the Lucky Bend Lookout. The house is well appointed, has a lovely view, and is close to the funky/lovely town of Guerneville as well as the wineries of Healdsburg and the Sonoma Coast. Sarah was easy to communicate with and knowledgable of the area. I would certainly return again.

About the owner: Lucky Bend Lookout is owned by two San Francisco families-the Martins and the Peabodys. Sarah and Eric Peabody have two children Raylah and Dean, and Regan and Teresa have a son Bennet. The four of us all come from different parts of the country, but mostly the SF Bay Area and Texas. Eric and Regan are both architects and have been the leaders of the design team for the renovation of the house. Why the Owner Chose Guerneville: Both families were looking for a place where they could give their children the gift of growing up in nature. When they found this house last summer, Regan said, 'This place is like a unicorn!' It is like no other house in the area with its beautiful location and authentic mid-century modern architecture. We look forward to enjoying the river with our families over the years and we want to share the fun with other families when we cannot be there. The Unique Benefits at this House: When we first saw this home we knew it was special. With the river just a few yards away, an open floor plan, the large glass expanse on the south side of the house and the exposed structural system, it all comes together in a perfect harmony. As soon as you arrive you smell the fresh clean air and feel the stress melt away and time seems to slow down a bit. We always return to the city with renewed spirits after visiting.
