About this listing
Welcome to our 100 year old house! Cozy, friendly and full of charm. Our location is hard to beat: close to both subway and bus with many excellent restaurants in walking distance. For runners and walkers, the Charles River paths are 0.5 mile away.
This rental is effectively a studio apartment with a private, locked entrance on the middle floor in a 3-unit building. It consists of a private bedroom, private eat-in kitchen and full bathroom in Central Square. The bedroom is extremely convertible. Two friends can have separate beds. If you're a couple, we can unite them side by side as a king size bed. By the way, while we have a cat upstairs she never comes into the suite; if you're allergic, you should have no problem here. We provide one set of towels. If you are staying more than a few days, we'll swap them every 3-4 days. If you need more, just ask.
Our house is a 6-7 minute walk from the subway (Central Square), a 5 minute walk to the bus on Mass Ave, a 5 minute walk to parts of MIT and a 15-20 minute walk to Harvard Square or to Boston in the other direction. If you're a runner, there's a good 9-12k path from our house and around the river. For local cycling, a Hubway bike rental station is a 5 minute walk from the house. There is a driveway for your car also. It is rare that our weather is hot enough to warrant a/c though if that occurs, we keep a window unit in summer. The TV in that room will also function as a computer monitor if you need a larger screen. For you Mac people, we have that adapter too. For international guests, we have spare electric adapters too.
Since you'll have your own private kitchen, we'll not make your breakfast. However, we keep coffee and tea in stock. We can give you a lift to Trader Joe's, only 5 min away by car. The kitchen has a coffee maker, hot water pot, blender, toaster oven and microwave. Basic cooking utensils and dishes are also provided. If you need more, just ask. If you wish to explore the bakeries and restaurants nearby, Yelp is very strong around here for giving recent reviews.
We are in a 100-year-old Victorian house originally constructed as a multi-family dwelling, typical of that time. While we have made some updates, some history remains, e.g., the claw-foot tub. Even though we're in an older building, don't worry...we have updated systems. In the winter, you can stay as warm as you like. There is a great back porch overlooking a 50-foot maple tree; this has proven to be very popular with guests. The house isn't perfect...it's an old building! However, there is good karma to spare.
We are neurotherapists as well as working musicians, one opera singer and one pianist. We can provide a loaner Korg or Roland keyboard for practice if you need. Check out our website: soundbrain
For guests, we give discounted brain-brightening sessions to clear away the cobwebs :)
There is a second rental bedroom down the hall. Students sometimes rent this room for extended periods. However, if it's available and you need extra space, we'll severely discount the extra bedroom during your stay in the larger space. Three will fit comfortably in the larger space. The small bedroom will accommodate two with the trundle bed. You can see photos in the Other Properties link from the main listing.

We're happy to share suggestions about our favorite restaurants and shops nearby.
Despite our urban setting, our neighborhood is quiet, particularly at bedtime. It has always been the kind of neighborhood where women can walk alone safely at night.
We actively recycle. We can do it for you if you simply keep glass, plastic and metal trash together and separated from trash. We also keep a compost container in the fridge for vegetable trash. We'll empty it into the big bin outside when you leave.
The subway, locally known as the "T", is a 7-8 minute walk away. The bus is a 5-6 minute walk. The river is about a 0.75 mile (1.1km) walk from our house. A nice walk/run path is there.
No smoking. No loud parties. Just the usual expectations from respectful, responsible adults. We live one floor upstairs.
I had four days between moving from my old apartment to my new & needed a place to stay. Finding this listing was a Godsend! It was quiet and cozy and it felt so nice to come back to a real house instead of a hotel at the end of the day. They were wonderful hosts! Sitting on the back porch to read and relax was great! Even though I'm a local I still felt like I was on vacation! I can't thank them enough for their hospitality and the lovely stay!
Paul was very welcoming from the first contact. He responded promptly, provided very clear information, was friendly and even spontaneously sent a message shortly before our trip to let us know rain was expected while we would be in Cambridge. The apartment is very well-located on a quiet residential street, providing easy access to the T, MIT, Harvard, Boston. It is only a few blocks from Mass Ave, where there are many restaurants, shops, etc. The apartment is clean, the beds comfortable. It is spacious for one or two people; a little tight for three, but quite manageable. We were very grateful for the air-conditioner and fans, which kept us comfortably cool during some very hot, humid weather. There were some deferred maintenance and cosmetics issues that diminished the feeling of cleanliness--the claw foot tub is charming, but layers of repainting had peeled in spots; the kitchen faucet was broken and gushed water from it's base. Paul said he would fix it during our stay, but that didn't happen, though he did tie a cloth around the base so that we could use the faucet without flooding the kitchen. The sliding screen door to the porch outside was badly torn and difficult to slide. While the stove was quite clean, the top had holes (one to two inches) in a couple of places where the metal top had broken through next to the burners. None of these things would prevent us from staying here again; they just caused some minor hassle and diminished, a bit, the feeling of cleanliness. The photos are accurate; the apartment is clean, charming, very well-stocked. We saw Paul only once, on arrival. He gave us a quick "tour" of the apartment. We were visiting our daughter and didn't need a lot of guidance or recommendations from Paul. He was very responsive when we did have a couple of questions during the course of our stay. When the forecast called for rain, Paul texted to let us know there were a couple of umbrellas set out just outside our door for our use--a most thoughtful gesture. Overall, this is a very comfortable, reasonably priced place with a friendly and responsive host.
Larry y Paul son muy amables, respetuosos y diligentes. Se preocuparon de hacernos sentir bienvenidos y siempre procuraron ayudarnos en lo que necesitáramos.
The boys were there to greet us. Made us very welcome. Even helped a couple of oldies get cases up the stairs. Loved the place - great kitchen and deck. Had lots of meals on the deck. Plenty of room. Great bed! Nice neighborhood. Easy access to subway. Close to Enterprise car rental office in Cambridge. Boston is a great place to visit.
We had a great couple of days exploring Boston/Cambridge and Paul and Larry's place made for a great base to begin our adventure. We received a warm welcome and enjoyed Paul's exclusive iPad tour, which covered everything from food and transportation to geography and history. The apartment itself was clean and spacious for two with all the facilities we needed. There's a good supermarket nearby (tucked away in the Le Meridien) and Massachusetts Avenue is just a short stroll away, giving plenty of options in terms of food. We walked to both Harvard and MIT with no problems but the distance to the former may not suit everyone (there is the option of taking the subway one stop to Harvard Square). All in all, the stay was excellent value for money. Thanks Paul and Larry!
Paul & Larry were great! They gave us a good overview of what was around the house and the best ways to get around. They were wonderful hosts and we will definitely stay here again the next time we come visit! Their space is perfect for a place to rest after a long day of walking around. It is located just a few blocks from a T stop and there are restaurants nearby. Having a spot to park was key for us and we couldn't appreciate more having a safe place to park that we didn't have to move from during our visit!
My friend and I could not have been happier with our visit to Paul and Larry’s private suite. We had plenty of room, with a nice-sized bedroom to share (we chose the twin bed option), a comfortable bathroom with bathtub and shower, and a roomy kitchen with a place to sit and eat. We loved having our breakfast on the deck each morning. Our hosts were available but not intrusive, and since we were out each day seeing the sights, we seldom saw them. However, Larry greeted us warmly when we arrived, helped us get settled in, recommended some great restaurants, and dropped in on an especially hot day to make sure our air conditioner was up and running. Paul texted us on our first morning to be sure we had found the coffee and tea they so kindly provided. They both stopped by on our last evening to bid us goodbye. All the little extras were there – sweetener, cream, soap, shampoo, etc. We loved the neighborhood and the location, which was perfect for exploring Cambridge and Boston via public transit, and we enjoyed a morning run each day on the Charles River. We would happily stay here again!

About the Host, Paul
We are a pair of classical musicians in Cambridge, located between MIT & Harvard. As with much of Cambridge, we're hopeless lefties.
On parle un peu de français. Hablamos poco español. Und ein bisschen Deutsch auch.
Most Sundays you'll find us "making a joyful noise" at one church or another.
We've been in this old house and this neighborhood over 20 years now. Since we cook a bit, the rental floor fridge and pantry might contain a little overflow from ours. We're huge fans of Airbnb both as guests and as hosts. Leave your towels and sheets at home; we provide all that for you. Our biggest challenge as Airbnb hosts is saying goodbye to the awesome people who stay with us.
