About This Listing
Welcome to my large and bright apartment on the fifth floor with a view of the skyline of Antwerp. It is situated on the Sint-Jansplein, one of the largest squares in the city in a multicultural and upcoming neighborhood. The Central Railway Station, the city center and trendy Park Spoor Noord are all a short walk by foot.
Sometimes Giants and Elephants pass by... really ! If you don't believe: check the pics.
The apartment (120 m2) has been renovated entirely in 2012 and has wooden floors throughout the whole space. There is a spatious living room with vintage furniture, tv, dvd and stereo. The large windows on the west offer beautiful views of the sunset. The large open kitchen with cooking island is equipped with a fridge, a freezer, a microwave/hot air oven, a gas stove with five pits and all the amenities you need. There are two bedrooms: the main bedroom has a large (180x200cm) ergonomic bed and lots of storage space. More people can sleep in the second bedroom, now used as an office space, on an extra mattress. The second bedroom is open towards the living room and both bedrooms give access to a large, quiet, balcony (10m2) at the back of the apartment. The spacious bathroom has a sink, a bath-tub and there is a walk-in shower. Between restroom and bathroom there is a separate room with washing machine and dryer.
If necessary, a parking place can be provided in a parking garage next door, where there is also a bike at your convenience.
In front of the apartment there is a 'vélo-station', the famous handy city bikes.
At the square front door, twice a week (Wednesdays and Fridays till 1PM) there is a market, were you can find fresh fruit, cheese, fish, honey, chicken, coffee, ...
What a joy!! Perfectly located, beautiful, two bedroom loft on the fifth floor (with elevator) overlooking a vibrant square (quiet at night), a 15 minute walk from the train station. It's also a 40-90 minute trip (car or train) to everything, Ghent, Brugge, Ypres, and Brussels.
Lots of light and up to date, high ceilings, super clean, near markets and restaurants. Gert's recommendations and hospitality are PERFECT. The garage (under the square) was great for our day-road-trips, and the short walk to the train station made everything in Flanders accessible.
We originally booked for 9 days, but it worked out so well we requested and stayed the full two weeks of our visit, canceling a hotel in Brussels - we didn't want that experience after having our own home! It's great to laze around in the morning watching the neighborhood come alive, drinking coffee and making plans for the day as well as our own breakfast. After long days of touring it was nice to hit the restaurants within a block or two, or make dinner "at home". The farmer's market is exactly what Californians are looking for.
Beds and furnishings are comfortable, the washer and dryer were essential, and the back terrace was the spot for warm days when we were jet lagged. The neighbors are friendly and helpful and since this is not a tourist neighborhood (so grateful for that) we felt like we had moved in permanently.
Since this can't be a perfect review - the garbage requires a bit of thought and management but Gert provides that information and a local gave us a friendly lecture on "which material in which bin" located on the square. They are way ahead of Americans when it comes to recycling.
Gert provided 3 full pages of information and suggestions which were spot on. I hope all our experiences with airbnb are this good.

Gert is a very friendly host. He handed over a lot of information and roadmaps of Antwerpen. He gave us advice about the very handy rent-bikes with a rentalstation just in front of his house.
The apartment was nice and clean. The bedroom has a 2-person mattress, the other bedroom is in open connection to the living room, Gert supplied two other (1-person) mattresses to use for us.
After he left he stayed in contact via SMS to inform us about the central heating system. Thank you Gert for a pleasant stay in Antwerpen!
Great and comfortable apartment, well situated, we enjoyed our stay in Antwerpen. We were nicely welcomed, Gert is a lovely guest, he gave us a lot of good addresses and advices, and he is really reactive. Everything you need is there for cooking, listening music, watching TV or DVD, internet ... We also have appreciated the beautiful light and sight from the apartment.
We walked into Gert's apartment after a long day's journey and were amazed by the views, the style, and the comfort. There are few words to describe how amazing this apartment is from it's location, to its space, to its layout, to its views, to its general style. It is gorgeous. Gert is an architect by trade and it seems like he has done most of the renovations. While there are some finishing touches to do on the apartment, they don't detract from how amazing it is. The back porch off of both of the sleeping areas is really pleasant. The bathroom is spacious with an amazing shower and tub. The living area is super comfortable and the kitchen is decked out. The front half of the apartment looks out onto Sint Jansplein, which is a really dynamic and well used square. Situated in the Portuguese and other immigrant neighborhood, there is great food and a really vibrant feeling to the area. We loved walking around to get groceries, stopping into the adorable bakery for bread, heading to the nearby Park Spoor Nord, and the extremely close access to most other parts of Antwerp. Gert, himself, is an amazing host. He left us a kind note and many locally-made maps that really gave us a sense of what to do in Antwerp. He was extremely communicative and friendly before, during, and after our stay. I also own a house that is on Airbnb and I learned a lot from Gert!! He is really top-notch.
All in all, this was the best airbnb experience I have had to date. I would HIGHLY recommend the apartment and Gert. Great great great experience.
We could not have been more happy staying at Gerts place!
The apartment is amazing. It was much better then we could ever expect. The location is great and it's close to stores, restaurants, bars. Everything you could possible need.
Gert have been so friendly and the communication have worked perfectly.
If we are visiting Antwerpen again, we would love to stay at Gerts place again.
We highly recommend it! :)
About the Host, Gert
Together with my lovely dog Boris I live in a sunny flat which has a nice view over a big square in the North of the city centre. Sometimes in the weekends I spend some time in Ghent, where my boyfriend lives, or head to the coast.
I adore snowboarding, so several weeks in winter I go to the French Alps to enjoy the slopes of the huge PortesDuSoleil ski area. Also in summer I can appreciate the mountains for hiking, mountainbiking and rafting, but ... in general I'm a city dweller.
At the moment I'm planning an extension of my flat at the roof of the building to have extra space and 2 nice roof gardens.
