3bedroom/2bath historic shingle house with antiques. Built in 1928 above scenic Silverado Trail, the historic home offers privacy above Napa River in oak woodlands. 0.9 mile walk/bike down a vinyard-lined road to historic St. Helena.
We named the house "Preservation House" because our focus has been to restore rather than modernize or remodel, both inside and out. Except for upgrades important for safety, like electrical service, kitchen ventilation, and fire protection, keeping the house's historic and authentic features is our goal. The house is 1,400 square feet and centers around an open livingroom-diningroom space with knotty pine walls and ceilings, in the tradition of a 1928 lodge. A large hearth with a woodburning stove adds to the cozy, intimate feeling of the livingroom, and both rooms are furnished with a mix of comfortable contemporary seating and period antiques and artwork. The woodburning stove is NOT operable because of fire restrictions in Napa Valley. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and historic gas stove that works beautifully. A covered porch off the kitchen is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee (i.e. Peet's coffee provided) and as a place to unwind in the evening. In the vernacular Italian building tradition, the house's downstairs bathroom is accessible through the covered outdoor porch rather than through an interior entrance. According to a historian of vernacular architecture, Arne Alanen, Prof. Emeritus, U. of Wisc., many Italians thought it was unsanitary for a bathroom to open into the first story kitchen and living spaces directly. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs bathroom have a shower and the upstairs bathroom also has a tub. As throughout the house, the bathrooms feature authentic historic elements rather than remodelled features.
The house has three bedrooms with large operable windows, some with screens. There are box fans in each bedroom but no air conditioning. One bedroom has a king-sized, another has a queen-size, and the third bedroom has two twin-size beds. Upstairs there are softwood floors and an exterior entrance from the upstairs landing to the oak woodlands behind the house. Although we try to abate poison oak on the property, it is a native plant. Please be cautious of poison oak on the property.
It would be hard to find a property in Napa Valley more centrally located to the very best wineries, historic downtowns ((website hidden). Helena & Calistoga), or more bike-accessible than this property. Silverado Trail is the backbone connecting the finest wineries in the Valley and has continuous bike lanes. The house has the privacy of oak woodlands and vinyards, the Napa River Wildlife Refuge and historic Pratt Ave. Bridge while still being a quick walk, bike, or drive into historic downtown St. Helena - (website hidden)
There are great bike rental options in St. Helena.
We want to give our guests the privacy to enjoy eachother. We will be onsite to meet you if at all possible and if not will make clear plans with you to make sure you have the key and other necessities. We also will be onsite for landscaping work including watering and for other chores.
Our property borders the Napa River (see aerial photo) and is in large part within the Napa River Wildlife Reserve. To the northeast the property is backed up to the Vaca Mountains and to the southwest is bounded by the Napa River and opens to the vinyards where several of the worlds finest wines are made in the Apellation St. Helena. During the busiest hours of the day, there is traffice noise from Silverado Trail at the house but as evening comes the greatest sound is crickets and frogs by the river, abundant bird-life, and almost no light pollution to hide the stars.
Walk or bike to town or local wineries. Of course, you can also drive. The Vine is Napa Valley's excellent bus service that runs up and down Highway 29; more on that here: (website hidden)
Downstairs stays cool if you leave the doors and windows closed in the summer. Upstairs box fans will help to cool the bedrooms, especially after sunset.

The Preservation house was a perfect place to stay the night before our Triathlon. Ed's communication was so prompt that we knew we were well taken care of before we even got to the house! It was a added bonus that Ed provided eggs, toast and coffee for breakfast in the morning! It was a perfect place to stay with a group of people. Cozy home in a great location with fabulous host. I would stay here again!
Very nice and accommodating hosts! I Would happily stay there again in a heartbeat. The house is removed enough to feel like your away from the big city, yet close enough to still have easy access to all that that valley has to offer. Great stay!
For comfortable lodging in a real house with real furniture and accoutrements, this well-named home is a unique option burgeoning with bygone comforts, natural textures, and pleasing decorations. The kitchen and adjacent outdoor dining/wine hour porch inspired us to the point that we did not eat out once the whole week. Yes, the antique gas stove/oven works as well as my grandmother's did back in the day, perfectly. And the outdoor entry bathroom off the porch had the six of us wondering over cocktails why our species ever moved the facilities indoors in the first place. There is traffic on the nearby roadway, to be sure, but in all honesty it just gave us something to marvel at as we luxuriated in the knowledge that we were content to be right there, not needing to go anywhere. The open air ventilation and crisp bedding invite long slumbering. Ed and his family are, I am pretty sure, who Airbnb had in mind as hosts when this scheme was first thought up: inspiring trust and caring for their lovely home, yet sharing it in a true sense.
We had a great stay at the Preservation House during the Napa Valley Marathon weekend. Ed was helpful and prompt in communications. The house was lovely and the kitchen well-stocked for cooking some of our own meals. The included coffee, eggs, bread, and other breakfast items were a nice touch as well. We would most definitely stay here again. The location is hard to beat for access to all of the Napa Valley.
First of all, Matt won, as in first place, the Napa Valley Marathon. We like to think that the house played a significant role in that, however unlikely that may seem. Whatever the reality may be, Matt and his family were wonderful guests, great at communicating, and all-around thoughtful. We hope they will stay with us next year and will be rooting for Matt again!
This is a fantastic house and Ed and Yvonne are really great hosts. We had a great getaway to St. Helena and this house topped off a wonderful weekend. The entire process was very smooth. Ed gave precise and clear instructions and even left us some coffee, eggs, breakfast basics in the fridge! The location was perfect and I would totally stay here again.
Came up here with my folks and used the farm house for a night. VERY conveniently located and very cool layout. Perfect for groups of 4-6 coming up to wine country for the weekend.
The place is fantastic. Right in the middle of everything, perfect for a group of 6. Ed was an attentive host- he had quick answers to all of our questions and put us right at ease. There was plenty of equipment to cook meals, and a ton of restaurants a short drive/bike ride away. Also: very comfy beds! Would definitely come back.
We had a great experience in the Preservation House. We wanted a cozy place to spend Christmas away from home, and the house fit the bill perfectly. Three lovely bedrooms, and the living space downstairs is charming and comfortable. The "old time" feeling makes you feel like you're visiting an old relative.
There's a bit of traffic noise from the Silverado Trail to contend with, but it didn't disturb us. It conveniently quiets down at bed time. Generally, the location is delightful: just out of town (charming St. Helena), but a nice walk or short drive to get to the downtown area. And great location for enjoying some wine tasting.
Edward was friendly and helpful throughout the process. Check-in and check out were smooth. We even found ingredients for breakfast thoughtfully left in the fridge--really helpful, since everything was closed on Christmas morning. A perfect experience from a perfect host.
We had a great time at Ed's place. The house is very cute and charming and in a really convenient location for wine tasting. I would highly recommend this place!
Ed and Yvonne's home was fantastic. It was perfect for 3 people who each needed their own room and it was very comfortable. Throughout the entire reservation process and days leading up to our arrival Ed responded quickly and made the entire check-in/check-out process super easy. We would definitely stay there again! Thank you for helping to make our trip enjoyable!
