The Space

We named the house "Preservation House" because our focus has been to restore rather than modernize or remodel, both inside and out. Except for upgrades important for safety, like electrical service, kitchen ventilation, and fire protection, keeping the house's historic and authentic features is our goal. The house is 1,400 square feet and centers around an open livingroom-diningroom space with historic knotty pine walls and ceilings, in the tradition of a 1928 lodge. A large hearth with a woodburning stove adds to the cozy, intimate feeling of the livingroom, and both rooms are furnished with a mix of comfortable contemporary seating and period antiques and artwork. The woodburning stove is NOT operable because of fire restrictions in Napa Valley. We have cable internet, Roku-box viewing but not cable tv. WiFi is also provided. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and historic gas stove that works beautifully (no microwave). A covered porch off the kitchen is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee (i.e. Peet's coffee provided) and as a place to unwind in the evening. In the vernacular Italian building tradition, the house's downstairs bathroom is accessible through the covered outdoor porch rather than through an interior entrance; it's a utilitarian, full bathroom. According to a historian of vernacular architecture, Arne Alanen, Prof. Emeritus, U. of Wisc., many Italians thought it was unsanitary for a bathroom to open into the first story kitchen and living spaces directly. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs bathroom have a shower and the upstairs bathroom also has a tub. As throughout the house, the bathrooms feature authentic historic elements rather than remodelled features.
The house has three bedrooms with large operable windows, some with screens. There are box fans in each bedroom but no air conditioning. One bedroom has a king-sized, another has a queen-size, and the third bedroom has two twin-size beds. Upstairs there are softwood floors and an exterior entrance from the upstairs landing to the oak woodlands behind the house. Although we try to abate poison oak on the property, it is a native plant. Please be cautious of poison oak on the property.

Guest Access

It would be hard to find a property in Napa Valley more centrally located to the very best wineries, historic downtowns ((website hidden). Helena & Calistoga), or more bike-accessible than this property. Silverado Trail is the backbone connecting the finest wineries in the Valley and has continuous bike lanes. The house has the privacy of oak woodlands and vinyards, the Napa River Wildlife Refuge and historic Pratt Ave. Bridge while still being a quick walk, bike, or drive into historic downtown St. Helena - (website hidden)
There are great bike rental options in St. Helena.

Interaction with Guests

We want to give our guests the privacy to enjoy eachother. We will be onsite to meet you if at all possible and if not will make clear plans with you to make sure you have the key and other necessities. We also will be onsite for landscaping work including watering and for other chores.

The Neighborhood

Our property borders the Napa River (see aerial photo) and is in large part within the Napa River Wildlife Reserve. To the northeast the property is backed up to the Vaca Mountains and to the southwest is bounded by the Napa River and opens to the vinyards where several of the worlds finest wines are made in the Apellation St. Helena. During the busiest hours of the day, there is traffice noise from Silverado Trail at the house but as evening comes the greatest sound is crickets and frogs by the river, abundant bird-life, and almost no light pollution to hide the stars.

Getting around

Walk or bike to town or local wineries. Of course, you can also drive. The Vine is Napa Valley's excellent bus service that runs up and down Highway 29; more on that here: (website hidden)

Other Things to Note

Downstairs stays cool if you leave the doors and windows closed in the summer. Upstairs box fans will help to cool the bedrooms, especially after sunset.

  • Ed was thorough and communicated very promptly via email, Airbnb or txt. The house was neat but we visited during a weather anomaly. We arrived on a day in early June that was 105+ when the normal temps should have been around 85 during the day I believe. Even with all the fans running, we had to leave the screened-windows open all night to try and get the house to cool, which allowed more of the noise from the road into the house. It wasn't so bad for the room that had the twin beds (away from street) but it made sleep difficult for the other 2 bedrooms facing Silverado (windows are maybe 40-50 ft from road). It lasted until about 11:30pm at night and then started again around 5:30am. In between those times there was the random vehicle that would wake us up. On our third and the last night, after the weather had cooled, the noise from Silverado was too much for our comfort even with the windows closed. It wasn't terrible like partiers keeping you up all night but not solid sleep one would like to get on a vacation or any kind of escape. Unfortunately the preservation of original or period-appropriate windows, which many people might like, makes for very little noise reduction.

    House Pros:
    - Awesome and convenient location for the valley
    - Inexpensive place for 6 people in the area

    House Cons:
    - Noise/traffic from Silverado trail

Ed's house is for heavy sleepers or maybe shoulder or low seasons. I want to give 3 stars, but I am just not sure. I've only been to the valley one time before (10 years ago) in a pricey hotel. The tea, coffee, eggs and bread Ed provided were an excellent convenience that allowed us to have a hearty breakfast every morning.

  • Great little house, centrally located to most of Napa. A group of us stayed here the night before a charity bike race and it worked perfectly for our needs. Really appreciated that the kitchen was well stocked with staples like coffee, tea and spices. Added bonus was the milk, eggs and other assorted food! The house is exactly as is described, a period house and close to the road.

Ed was responsive and the whole experience was seamless. Would definitely use again.

  • We had a wonderful time at Ed and Yvonne's home! With my mother and grandparents in town I knew I wanted to take them up to Napa, but have the experience of being in a home and Eds place was perfect. It felt like a little cabin in the woods, yes is minutes from the finest vineyards. It is 5 minutes from downtown St Helena which has a grocery, restaurants and a gas station.

Ed even left us coffee, bread and eggs so that when we arrived we could have a fresh. Real fast in the morning. Ed is very responsive and a great host. We will be back for sure!

  • The Preservation house was a perfect place to stay the night before our Triathlon. Ed's communication was so prompt that we knew we were well taken care of before we even got to the house! It was a added bonus that Ed provided eggs, toast and coffee for breakfast in the morning! It was a perfect place to stay with a group of people. Cozy home in a great location with fabulous host. I would stay here again!

  • Very nice and accommodating hosts! I Would happily stay there again in a heartbeat. The house is removed enough to feel like your away from the big city, yet close enough to still have easy access to all that that valley has to offer. Great stay!

  • For comfortable lodging in a real house with real furniture and accoutrements, this well-named home is a unique option burgeoning with bygone comforts, natural textures, and pleasing decorations. The kitchen and adjacent outdoor dining/wine hour porch inspired us to the point that we did not eat out once the whole week. Yes, the antique gas stove/oven works as well as my grandmother's did back in the day, perfectly. And the outdoor entry bathroom off the porch had the six of us wondering over cocktails why our species ever moved the facilities indoors in the first place. There is traffic on the nearby roadway, to be sure, but in all honesty it just gave us something to marvel at as we luxuriated in the knowledge that we were content to be right there, not needing to go anywhere. The open air ventilation and crisp bedding invite long slumbering. Ed and his family are, I am pretty sure, who Airbnb had in mind as hosts when this scheme was first thought up: inspiring trust and caring for their lovely home, yet sharing it in a true sense.

  • We had a great stay at the Preservation House during the Napa Valley Marathon weekend. Ed was helpful and prompt in communications. The house was lovely and the kitchen well-stocked for cooking some of our own meals. The included coffee, eggs, bread, and other breakfast items were a nice touch as well. We would most definitely stay here again. The location is hard to beat for access to all of the Napa Valley.

    Response from Edward & Yvonne:

First of all, Matt won, as in first place, the Napa Valley Marathon. We like to think that the house played a significant role in that, however unlikely that may seem. Whatever the reality may be, Matt and his family were wonderful guests, great at communicating, and all-around thoughtful. We hope they will stay with us next year and will be rooting for Matt again!

About
Yvonne and I have four "children" between that ages of 22 and 15. We live between San Francisco and Saint Helena, California. I'm an architectural historian and we both are dedicated to keep the authentic historic character of our home intact and well maintained. The ceiling and walls of the living and dining rooms are lined with 1928 knotty-pine and Persian rugs, lending the house a warm place to cozy up with family and friends after a day in the beautiful Napa Valley. The house is set at the edge of an oak forest along the wine country's most scenic route, Silverado Trail, and across from the Napa River and from the greatest wineries in the US. It's a scenic walk (about 2 km) down a vinyard-lined road to the lively and lovely historic Main St. of St. Helena, Beringer Winery, and the California Culinary Institute just to name a few great destinations. I speak German and French and Yvonne speaks some Finnish and Spanish. Native San Franciscans, we'll gladly do what we can to steer guests to the amazing places in the greater Bay Area and beyond.
