Conroy's Old Bar is especially suited to those who have a love of the great outdoors. Who would like to experience the true beauty and tranquillity of rural Ireland, whilst staying in a converted authentic Irish village bar.
Conroy's is situated close to Lough Derg/Terryglass and the River Shannon. And on the border of Counties Clare, Galway and Offaly, in the small friendly village of Aglish in North Tipperary.

Walking into Conroy's Old Bar is just as you would expect a typical, traditional, characterful Irish rural village bar to be. So much so, that you would think it's business as usual.
At first glance you would never know that Conroy's no longer holds a liquor licence, and that so, it has been discreetly adapted into quirky self-catering accommodation that sleeps 4 +cot.
It's not until you take a closer look that you realise, even though Conroy's Old Bar has retained all of its charm and character, including its open fire, Conroy's Old Bar is hiding a little secret all of its own…….
The original highly polished mahogany bar, complete with bar pumps, optics and the original till is where you will also find neatly hidden behind it, the fully functioning kitchen, with fridge, full size cooker etc. The bar area with its Liscannor stone floor is also home to the darts board and the skittles game.
The lounge with its cosy open turf/log fire is also home to all manner of pub games, books, maps and tourist information. It's the perfect place to relax and toast your toes after a long day of taking in what this beautiful and very often overlooked area of rural Ireland has to offer.
The old snug next to the lounge is now a double bedroom with en-suite wc and what was once the cellar/keg store is now home to a super king-sized bed, complete with the old beer barrel delivery door and sloping floor to aid the moving of the barrels.
There is also a shower room with very large shower.
There is full central heating and all linen, towels and fuel are provided.
Outside there is a large beer garden with numerous seating and BBQ areas, from which there are views over the Tipperary countryside. It's the perfect place to watch the sun go down, sat in front of the open outdoor fire.
Conroy's Old Bar is child friendly and all baby/child equipment is available. (Cot's, high chairs etc. at NO extra cost)
*** NEW FOR 2016 ***
New for 2016 The World of Fairies, Fairy Garden & Workshop.
When you book a Family Stay at Conroy's Old Bar, also included is the opportunity for the children to become a Fairy Folk Helper for the day, in the World of Fairies Workshop (situated next door to Conroy's Old Bar).
Children can while away the hours discovering the real life workshops of the Fairy Folk Shoe Maker and the Fairy Folk Tailor. Create different crafts, like their very own Fairy Door. Hunt for Fairy doors and houses in the enchanting Fairy Garden. They will also be invited to a Fairy Folk Tea Party in Milo Burrows Hobbit Hole, by a very special guest, and play in the Leprechauns Pirate Ship, and design their very own Fairy doors on our huge chalk boards. The day ends with a hunt for the Fairy Queens treasure, that has been hidden by the mischievous Leprechauns.
Disabled Facilities.
Being all on one level means Conroy's Old Bar is friendly to the slightly infirm or those who have trouble with stairs. The shower is large enough to put a chair into, to help with those who are unable to stand for longer periods. Unfortunately due to a couple of narrow doorways, it has to be said that Conroy's is not too wheelchair friendly.
For anyone who has specific needs, we are always more than happy to talk with you, to see if we can arrange and adapt the furniture etc. to make your stay a more pleasant one.
Only a short walk from Conroy's Old Bar you will find the village pub and a lovely new children's playground. There is also a church and the village hall.
Within a 20 mile radius you will find fishing, boating/sailing, water sports, walking, cycling, golf, horse riding/hunting, photography, go carting or even astronomy and genealogy.

Guest Access

Guests have the sole use of Conroy's Old Bar and the rear garden and full use of The World of Fairies Fairy Garden.

Interaction with Guests

We always greet our guests on arrival to give them the keys and show them a few pointers on the more unusual aspects of The Pub With No Beer.
As we only live next door, we are on hand to help in any way if needed.
We are quite happy to leave our guests to their own devices and enjoy their stay as they wish, but we do also welcome spending time with our guests, should they wish to do so.

The Neighborhood

Conroy's Old Bar - The Pub With No Beer, is based in the centre of Ireland approx 2 hours from Dublin. Although it is an area which is often overlooked for the more popular tourist areas, it is often said that if it is the "Real Ireland" you are looking for, then this is the area to be.
Situated in a small friendly village in North Tipperary, bordering counties of Clare, Galway and Offaly we are perfectly placed for visiting the larger cities of Galway & Limerick approx 1 hr and Kilkenny approx 1hr 30mins.
Closer to home approx 6 miles away we have the beautiful Lough Derg and the River Shannon, a haven for fishing, swimming, water sports, boating etc. There are plenty of beautiful areas along the shores for wild swimming too. We are only a short drive from Coolbaun Quay, the popular wedding venue, Spa and Marina.
In Portumna approx 6 miles away situated on Lough Derg & the River Shannon, there is Portumna Forest Park, a beautiful haven for wildlife and photography, where you can hire bikes and travel the numerous cycle routes around the forest. There is also Portumna Castle & grounds, as well as the ruins of the old friary and the new Museum in The Old Workhouse. Not far from here you will also find Pallas Carting, for those with a love of speed and Go carts.
The beautiful Georgian town of Birr is approx 8 miles from Conroy's and is home to Birr Castle & grounds, which in turn is home to the Worlds Tallest Box Hedging and what was once The Worlds Largest Telescope, certainly a sight to see.

The ancestral home of Barack Obama in the small village of Moneygall is approx 30 mins away and Irelands 1st Eco village in Cloughjordan is just 15mins.
In our nearest large town of Nenagh we have the Genealogy Centre where many come to trace their Irish Heritage. It is set within the old jail (Gaol) and heritage museum and is just across the road from Nenagh Castle, which has been recently renovated and is very unusual as it is one completely round tower.
The nearest town to us is Borrisokane for essential amenities, library, cash point, Pharmacy, service station, butchers, groceries etc.
There are many pretty villages around us where you can pass the time away with locals in traditional Irish pubs, as well as some lovely restaurants selling excellent food.
We can highly recommend spending the day at Bunratty Castle approx 1hr 20 mins and an evening at it's medieval banquet. We can also highly recommend Blarney Castle (Cork) approx 2hrs. Where if you have a head for heights and can manage to get to the top of the castle, you can kiss the Blarney Stone and never again be lost for words. lol.
If there is anything in particular that you would be interested in seeing or doing please just ask and we will be happy to give general advice and find out opening times, costs ect.

Getting Around

The World's 1st Self Catering Pub - Conroy's Old Bar is not on a main bus route. Due to it's rural location, a car is the very best way to see what this beautiful area has to offer. The nearest bus stop to Conroy's is in Borrisokane (approx 4 miles) and the nearest train station is either Cloughjordan (approx 15mins drive) or Nenagh (approx 20 mins drive).

Other Things to Note

Please Note: Conroy's Old Bar is in the small rural village of Aglish, where due to it's rural location, we do advise the use of a car, to be able to make the most of what the surrounding area has to offer. It may not be the first place you would choose to go on holiday, but it does happen to be where The World's 1st Self Catering Pub is located, conveniently in the centre of Ireland.
It's a friendly village with a (working) pub, children's playground and church.
As Conroy's is an original pub it is situated close to the road with no front garden, but does have a large, secure, private rear garden.
Conroy's is in a rural area, with tractor's and agricultural machinery passing by.
Unfortunately, Conroy's Old Bar is not suitable for pets, due to the garden being close to open farmland, which can have farm animals (horses, cattle) on.
We do own a very friendly dog (boarder collie cross) called Ruben. He is now getting very old (14yrs), he's going deaf and blind, and we love the bones of him, but we also understand that not everyone would feel the same around a dog.
He is NEVER allowed into Conroy's Old Bar!
We do ask guests if they would like Ruben being around them, in the garden only.
We are also MORE than happy to keep him out of guests way if that is what they prefer.

We Dave & Erron and our 3 children moved to Ireland in 2002 from a very industrial town in North Lincolnshire, England. We had found that our life in the town of Great Grimsby seemed to suit the lifestyle we craved, less and less.

Not only did we want a more rural lifestyle with fresh air, but also the chance to experience life at a much slower pace, where "normal" is to pass the time of day with total strangers. Where we could appreciate the night sky without light pollution, and have the time to notice the changing of the seasons.

We first moved to the village of Sixmilebridge in Co. Clare and then 2 years later moved to Aglish in Co. Tipperary where we bought Conroy's. The licence to the bar had already been sold and the village shop and Post Office had also been closed.

We originally thought that the property would make good self catering accommodation because of it's size, but it wasn't until we were refitting the kitchen in the main house and we were using the pub as our "make do kitchen", that we actually came up with the idea of keeping the bar intact and using it's uniqueness to it's advantage, and so

Ireland's 1st Self Catering Pub
