The Bike Shed is a confluence of a love of small spaces and a celebration of our favorite transportation method, the bicycle. The Bike Shed is a brand new space that we built just for you!

Located two blocks from Alberta Street, The Bike Shed is a short walk from many of Portland's well known eateries, including Salt & Straw ice cream, Bollywood Theater, and more!

Bring your bikes or rent some close by. The Bike Shed is on a bike boulevard and is an easy ride to downtown.

The space
The Bike Shed is a 650 square foot backyard cottage. It gets it's name from the fact that it's attached to our actual bike storage shed, and the myriad of bike-themed artwork throughout the dwelling. Don't worry-- the space is far from a shed, and more of a high-end miniature house.

The space fits 3 people comfortable. Upstairs is a loft space, with a queen bed, closet, a lounge area with a couch, a small desk, and a TV. Downstairs has a kitchen / living area, bathroom, and a small bedroom with a twin xl day bed and another TV. The downstairs floor is concrete, so consider bringing slippers in the colder months.

The upstairs TV has Amazon Prime. The downstairs TV has a Blu-Ray player and a collection of movies, plus an Apple TV (older model) for AirPlay if you have an iPhone. We do not have cable, but a few network HD stations come in on both TVs in via an antenna on the roof.

The kitchen is equipped with high-end compact appliances, including a dish washer, an induction cooktop, a european convection oven, toaster, refrigerator and microwave. The dining table has a lovely window bench seat. Plenty of dishes and cookware are provided.

The kitchen / living area opens up to the outside through a large 3-panel glass door onto a back-yard deck.

We built the Bike Shed with the environment in mind, and it is certified by Earth Advantage. Many of the materials used in the construction were salvaged, including wood that was salvaged from the original garage that used to stand in its place. On sunny days in the summer and fall, power is supplied by a 4 kilowatt array of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof. The space is heated and cooled by an efficient mini-split heat pump.

We have tried to design the Bike Shed to be family friendly. As parents, we know how challenging it is to find beautiful spaces that are also kid friendly and hope other parents can find this cottage a relaxing family spot. The downstairs bedroom makes a great kids room-- it has a door that closes and we added some extra sound baffling to the walls & ceiling.

Guest access
Guests have full access to the entire building, with the exception of the part that we actually use as a bike shed for our bikes!

During the pandemic unfortunately the yard and deck are spaces that will not be shared at this time. In an effort to keep things safe the deck and yard spaces are off limits. Thanks for your understanding.

Other things to note
COVID-19 UPDATE-We are accepting guests on a limited basis during the stay at home order. To comply with the active stay-at-home order in Oregon, we are accepting guests who live in the same household as each other and who are traveling for non-recreational reasons. We are taking additional precautions on our end, including leaving the property vacant for several days between guests, which we believe is the best way to ensure our property is safe for you. Please be aware that many businesses in Portland are currently closed, including all dine-in restaurants (some are available for takeout only).
