The Spanish Arch (An Póirse Spáinneach) in Galway city, Ireland, was originally an extension of the city wall from Martin's Tower to the bank of the Corrib, as a measure to protect the city's quays, which were located in the area once known as the Fish Market (now Spanish Parade). It was constructed in 1584.
In the 18th century the Eyre family of Eyrecourt, County Galway, created an extension of the quays called The Long Walk and created the arches to allow access from the town to the new quays. The Spanish Arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib directly across from The Claddagh.
In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami generated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Until 2006, part of the Arch housed the Galway City Museum. At that time, the museum was moved to a new, dedicated building located just behind the Arch.
The Long Walk is a promenade to one side of the Arches.
Being right downtown, there is no need for a hire car unless you plan to travel to Connemara. Lally Tours have an excellent reputation for guided tours.

Aoife was an amazing host! The apartment is beautiful and situated in the perfect location. We could not have had a better experience. I highly recommend this apartment and the generosity of our host to anyone.
We spent three days in Galway and our host was very helpful before and during our holidays. The duplex appartment is very cosy and bright, well located and having a private slot for parking the car really helps in Galway. Thank you for your help Ms.D!
The location of the house is very very good, near to the seaside and close to the downtown. but very quiet.
The house is well faciliated and decorated. The host was in india, but she communicated well with us, and very considerable on everything we need
We very much enjoyed staying in Aiofe's apartment. The location is absolutely perfect - both central (five minute walk to the city center) and quiet. The building is along a canal, and the apartment itself faces a very quiet internal courtyard. Secure parking is available in a parking structure a short walk away. The apartment is in superb condition and is fully equipped. Aiofe is an excellent host - she kept in touch with us and a very minor issue (needed an extra towel) was dealt with efficiently.
Galway itself is very charming, though we were there at a very busy time for tourism (race week) which should be avoided to really enjoy the city.
The apartment provided by Ms. D O'Connell was lovely! The location was perfect...right in the heart of the city. The courtyard was fairly quite and tucked away along the Long Walk. It was the perfect location since I planned my holiday around the Galway Arts Festival and meeting up with friends in the city centre. The apartment was super clean and had everything...a full kitchen which was stocked with food upon my arrival, fresh linens, laundry machine, microwave, kettle, dishes, Wi-Fi, secure entry into courtyard with code. I was in communication with Ms. D O'Connell during my stay and she was always available to answer my questions. Having lived in Galway for 4 years, I knew my way around but it was nice to know she was available for me during my stay. She changed out the linens half way throughout my stay and provided fresh towels. I could not have asked for a better host. I would highly recommend this apartment for anyone wanting to experience the charm of Galway. The location is also perfect for traveling around Connemara or out to the Burren...easy access in and out of the city for day trips. I loved my stay and will definitely considering staying again during my yearly trips back to Galway!
Ms. D was very communicative from the beginning and made us feel very welcome. She even offered to pick up groceries for us. Her apartment was just as described, and in a great location - a short walk to restaurants and the center of town.
